Yup, make a backup now using ROM manager, or by booting to recovery and doing it (either way is the same thing). That way if anything ever happens you can repair it in a few mintues 
It's worth mentioning that had this been a planned switch to cm7, you could have backed up all your apps and restored them on the new firmware. It's not normally much hassle to restore.
