Root Problems flashing custom ROM

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to all this stuff so I'd really appreciate some help. I've recently rooted my HTC desire, and got ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.7. I've been trying flash a new ROM but failing miserably. I was trying to do it through ROM manager (I didn't know any better), but it would always fail to install, with the message:

/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log

I tried this with 3 different ROMs: CM7, oxygen 2.2.2 and Solstice 1.0.2.2 and it did the same thing with all three.

After reading on this site that ROM manager = bad, I tried to manually flash both CM7 and Solstice 1.0.2.2. Both said the installation was successful, but when the phone is rebooted, it gets stuck on the new ROM's loading screen (for up to an hour before I finally gave up and pulled the battery). I've searched forums for some kind of solution but haven't found one yet, unless I'm just being stupid.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

When you rooted, did you check the erase size before hand? Does the phone still work on your original ROM (i.e can you restore and boot)?
 
I didn't check the erase size beforehand, wouldn't even know where to have looked to be honest :confused:
The phone still works fine with the original ROM, I have to restore to the backup after every attempt to flash a new ROM.

Right, Download "terminal Emulator" from the market.

open it and type

Code: 
cat /proc/mtd
and press enter. Notice the space between cat and /proc. Also, its case sensitive so use all lower case.

It should return numbers of 20,000 or 40,000. Need to know which please

Hmm ok that's fine with 2.5.0.7

Try format system, data and cache via recovery then reflash?

congrats on cm7 - btw whats it like as a rom? ive tried miui xj and redux2 - and now SU's fabulous dGB ;)

Cheers, I'm just getting to grips with it at the moment, but so far I like it. It seems a lot less cluttered than the HTC one, and a bit faster too. I also seem to have more internal memory free, which was one of the things that led me down this path to start with.

I can't compare with other ROMs as this is the first one I've tried, are there any major differences in the ones you've tried so far?

@CrOz. I first tried miui xj which is like a better version of the stock os imo.
very good looking and stable.
then I tried redux2 which has a lighter feel to it and looks less glamorous. but I
think I preferred it as more different to stock.

I'm now on dGB which is obviously the best! ;-)
its the most stripped down and smallest. gives the moat free space and ram.

my advice is just keep trying them until you find the one that is good for you.
but make sure you nandroid and then wipe before installing

Cheers for the advice. Stripped down and small is what I'm after (I hate bloat!) so I'm going to give dGB a go, just d/l the ROM now :)
 
cool :) its good - been using it without issue for 3 days now - if you like a slightly glossier feel then you could also try redux2 - that is v good also - but lighter than miui xj

...oh, if you want to feel the full effect of dGB you need to do all the custom hboot stuff - ive not done that - but i think it frees up lots of internal space :) - there is a link to the hboot install info in the dGB thread
 
Just installed the dGB ROM and now have no data service??? Wi-fi works fine, and I have a phone signal. I like the style and barebones approach of the ROM, but I can't do without my data!

If I can get this sorted I might try out the HBoot stuff...
 
It does clearly say in the rom thread to ensure you backed up your apns using apn backup from the market or something.
 
hi CrOz,

it shouldnt be too much of a worry - manual setup is pretty easy i find - as long as you have a pc to search on net for settings that is :) assuming you do as you posting on here

thanks Shauny - good suggestion

btw: talking of backups - im using MyBackupPro and i does its stuff ok - BUT, i still have to go through every app and do manual configs on it :( takes bleedin ages - the flashing/nandroid bit is the easy bit! :D

is there a better backup that will fully restore the app setups?
