Root problems in the installing ROM process

I would, but bear in mind that if it doesn't work you've factory reset your phone for nothing.

slug you should travel down to berkshire and do my phone for me

Two weeks ago when I was on holiday and I might have! I'd pass on the "Wifebeater" though and stick to the malt. ;)

Sounds like you're having a fun day then Slug :p

Well, the telly's rubbish on a Monday anyway. :)

I wish I could be of more help but (a) I had it easy due to the early Hero's insecure bootloader and (b) Sync refuses to be anything other than cooperative with me since I moved to Win7.

right i cant think or find anything else apart from what i already tried and found lol

lol been searching again

in my recovery menu i only have 3 things reboot , apply update.zip and wipe factory reset ..

i been on a site and there were pics of someones recovery menu and they had extra things on there like nandroid back up , davlik wipe , fat32 wipe so on and so on . am i not meant to be seeing these things too , could there be something wrong with my recovery menu that needs fixing because theoretically i should atleast be able to press the trackball to at least use one of my 3 options right ? instead of it just being dead . lol im just taking pot shots now ,bloody android

That recovery menu with all the extra options is what we're aiming for. Once you downgrade to the old 1.5 you use flashrec to switch out your current recovery menu and replace it with the new one.

But yeah, I've no idea why your recovery menu won't react. You should just be able to scroll + click with the trackball.

lol thats what i thought , maybe there is someway to reset the recovery menu or summin lol i dunno im just saying things that sound good now , its a good job i aint got work tomorrow lol im not sleeping til i sort it

right im giving up for another day .

i'll be back as soon as i wake up giving it another go ..day 3 still at the 1st hurdle lol

thanks for all ya help again xyro

right i been on phone to htc again and actually spoke to someone who knew what i was going on about even about goldcarding to downgrade and put custom ROM on etc , i told him my hero only has 3 things in recovery mode and its missing things like nandroid backup , davlik fat32 options etc , he said all that should be there and i should atleast be able to click on the options available .

he is now in the process of speaking to the people who do all the stuff like loading of files and whatever they do to all the system files etc and is giving me a call back as soon as he can ..

lol i bet he says i have a faulty hero and i have to have it replaced or fixed by three which means three having my hero for about two weeks and them giving me a brick of a phone on loan

I hope you are having a worse than typical experience. I found this, not sure it it will help you but anything is worth a shot.

If you are having trouble getting your computer to recognize your phone (some windows operating systems) for adb access. Do this:
1) Download the HTC sync for Droid Eris Here
2) Install the software completely
3) Restart computer
4) Completely exit HTC sync on your computer so that it is not running
5) test it out.
in command prompt:
Code:
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\adb devices
If that pulls up a device starting with the letter H, you are good. Thats your phone's serial number. You may now proceed to root your phone.

Found here HTC Hero Tips, Tricks, and Easter Eggs - Page 7 - Android Central Forums

ajanu it recognizes the phone but when i get to the android update ROM utility once i have click next twice sync just shuts down therefore the ruu is not able to load because it says usb connection error170 or 171

i have adb access

oh yeah i see summin about doing hero.img thing where you apparently dont have to downgrade to put cust rom on . but could find anything else about it ...

saying that i have probably tried already

whats this flash update via adb all about

I found this thread on XDA, which shows the command to flash an update.zip via an adb command. Hopefully this will get round the fact you can't select anything on the recovery menu.

So you have adb set up, right? Try running this.

- Open command prompt and enter these one at a time:

cd /adb (If you have the adb file in C:\adb)
adb remount
adb shell
recovery --update_package=/sdcard/update.zip

(DISCLAIMER: This is just something I randomly found on google, so no guarentees it will work :P I only know the very basics of adb).

yeah i have adb set up it said installed when windows was install it .. duno where it is tho i will have a look

Useful tip #1:

Once you've CD'd into the \adb directory on the PC, issue an "adb devices" command first. You'll probably get a msg about the daemon being out-of-date and restarting, then should see your device ID number. That let's you know that the command is functional and you can proceed.

ok i found the folder is called adbdriver_v3_google , the folder is empty but i have plugged my hero to com and i can find it in device manager but cant find it in a search of adb.exe
