Hello adz63,

I too admire your approach and persistence, well done.
Unfortunately, I have an HTC Hero from Telus (Canada GSM) and I'm stuck at the error 170 USB error stage.
adb works
HTCSync works but I can't get RUU to work.
Read dozens of web pages, watched numerous YouTube videos...
Built the Golddisk img but haven't been able to get anything to work so far to downgrade my device so I can root it properly. The first 2-3 pages of this thread mirror my experiences and frustration completely.
To add salt to the wound, I have been told that my provider will not be sending OTA updates to Android for this device. :(

If anyone has experience with getting Android 2.anything onto a Telus HTC Hero (unlocked) I would be extremely please to hear from them.

So, as it turns out, there is a "hero" in the Hero process. I was able to use the Clockwork ROM Manager to bypass the USB error (since it doesn't involve the PC per se). I now have 2.1 on my device although I'm not sure I have it properly rooted yet.
Baby steps as they say.

The reason I question the Root portion is that part of thr ROM Manager options brings up the SU screen but it just hangs.
I can reboot into Clockwork "recovery mode" (?) and choose to reload from update.zip which seems to work fine for loading various ROM's.

so do you need to root ?

if so tell me and i will give you a link to download and root your phone in 30secs

[APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.2 beta 5) - xda-developers if you need to re-root or root use this

1.6.2 is in beta so prob best to use 1.6.1

Thanks. Like you, I've read so many web pages and tried an infinite number of options over the last few days. I've tried RXMix, SenseHERO and am loading FroydVillain right now.

I'll give the reroot a try shortly.

By 'I now have 2.1' I assume you mean a custom 2.1 ROM? Every custom ROM is pre-rooted, so that's not the problem.

Try this: Go to the Settings >> Applications >> Development and make sure USB Debugging is enabled.

Without that enabled, the SU app will hang, as you've experienced.

Yes, in fact I've had a few Custom ROMS installed over the last few dats now (Yay!! Clockwork ROM Manager!! Yay Yay Yay!).

I've tried and replaced/overwritten:
VillainROM 12
RCMix21
Floyo-0.8
FroydVillain-1.5.0-release-signed
SenseHERO-2.1
and (my current favourite)
Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R-signed

I found most of them way too complicated and bloated for my personal requirements although I do appreciate the skills and effort required to create them.

I have yet to try (and need to revisit as I can't recall what each had to offer in variation):
2.1-ruu-root-dx-signed
2.1-ruu-stock-signed
galaxys1.4v2
nandroid-2.0
nindroid-v3.1-122-576-logo-release-signed
RUU_Sapphire_Rogers_WWE_3.05.631.7_R_release_signed_NoDriver
(I believe this is the stock ROM from my local provider Rogers Canada)

Oh what fun it is to have a hero(tm) ROM tonight....
(sung to the tune of Jingle Bells)

Thanks to all for documenting your experiences, adding your assistance and generally being helpful.

Well, when you use something that requires root, does the SU Permissions screen still hang at a black screen? That's what I thought your problem was. Or do you get options to allow or deny?

If you get the options, everything is fine :)
