ok what about backing up? does the backup go on my sd? and if so how much space do i need?

Backups go on your sd card and I say have at least 500mb of space for a backup.

and im not quite sure what to look for in a ROM mind helping me out?

People look for different things. I guess you'd want a stable rom with few issues and nice tweaks

As kage said, a stable rom with few issues and good tweaks.
I would recomend stock++ or Admiral Beast as your first rom. (Pssst, try Admiral Beast first ) then later on you could try Open Android or Android Lithium or Android Static X... or just stick with stock++/Admiral Beast. All up to you.
