Help Problems syncing droid to PC.

Luckly I have a seperate card that I can put the micro card into, but it seems to be taking for ever to reformat on my laptop.

I am running vista also. So I hope after I reformat it through my computer, it will work.

Good call, that was my next suggestion. Format it in Windows to see. What did you format it as? NTFS or FAT? You could have done the quick format too...

I was in such a hurry when I put the car in my computer that I did not check any of the 2 format options on the format list. I hope it still formats.

If this first format does not work, do you have any suggestions?

16GB will take forever to format unless you click the quick format. That will do fine. Make sure it is FAT32. I'm guessing Vista had NTFS auto selected...

My 2 format options were, "quick format" and "create an MS-DOS start up disk"

Second drop down from the top is "File System" and it is set to FAT32 as a default... Format it with quick format and FAT32 and pop it back into your phone and try again...

If it does not work, I would try to format it inside your phone again. After that if it STILL doesn't work take it to Verizon tomorrow and get yourself a new one! (phone that is)

Well, that did not work either. It was formatted in FAT32. I put the card in and my computer would not reconize it. I tried reformatting the card again through my phone and nothing.

I will take the phone back tomorrow and see what they can. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate everyone tring to help out.

Thanks Chico.

I just noticed something on my phone. Right after I click mount on my phone to try and sync it up with my computer. At the top of the phone, on the line where the clock is. Right before it says usb connected, it says "turn off usb storage". I have searched around to see if this is something I can turn off, but can not seem to find this option. Not sure if this is normal or not, was just wondering.

That is normal. I think it is just telling you that the next time you go to the navigation bar you will be using the option to turn it off. Everytime you mount it will say that in the navigation bar. Well at least it does with mine! :p

It took me three tries to get Windows 7 to see it.. BUT that is normal with Verizon/Windows phones for me.I would return it where ever you bought and have them sync it to a PC. I doubt the problem is Vista (I hope anyway). I know at Best Buy they have a "walk out working policy". If that is where you bought it.

I had the same problem. The posts above about the top menu bar and pulling it down are the key. Thanks for the help.

If you just got here, follow these steps.

1. With the phone on, and the sd card mounted on the phone (you can see that it has about 14 gigs free, so you know it is mounted) connect the usb cable from the computer to the phone.

2. observe the usb symbol at the top left of the droid's screen
put your finger at the top near the usb symbol and observe that the bar changes to the date

3. pull the bar down to reveal another menu

4. choose usb connected

5. choose mount

on your pc, you should now have access to the card

To unmount, eject the card from the pc, pull down the top menu and select turn off usb storage and you are done. The card will remount automatically on the phone.

Thanks to the previous poster for pointing toward the top menu bar.

Update: I had an old Windows 7 RC pc kicking around and hooked it up to that this morning. Opened right up by just plugging it in and mounting through the notifications bar. I put some music, vids, pics on it and it works great. Come back to my Vista notebook do the same steps and it still wants a disc inserted into drive F:. Definitely either something in Vista that doesn't like it.

I have Vista and it works fine. It may have something to do with a specific setting in Vista on your machine. I'm running Vista Ultimate. I have Windows Mobile on here also because I have a pda that I would sync. I don't know if any of those things matter but I connect the usb just as has been described by others in this thread by dragging down the menu bar at the top, selecting usb and mount.

Vista Home Premium here. Hmmm I wonder if I should go to device manager and uninstall all usb related items and then scan for new hardware changes to see if that does the trick.

Well I deleted it out of Device Manager > Portable Devices but once it found and installed it again it still is wants a disc inserted.

I just tried it again. When I plug it in I get an error message on my computer telling me no disk. I cancel that and go to the menu bar and select usb, mount. In the device manager it shows as usb mass storage device. I don't get the menu that pops up asking what I want to do. I have to go back into my computer and double click the F: drive for the phone.

I sure wish I could be more help. I know how frustrated you must be.

I have Vista Premium with service pak 1.

I dont think it has something to do with my computer. My old phone worked on it and my wifes phone worked no problem also. We have lots of MP3's, camera's and digital picture frames that who up to our computer and I have never had this problem. I think it has to be something with the phone.

I am going to take back here in a hour or so. I will let you guys and gals know what they say.

Later Chico.

It worked for me in Linux. I was having problems because I wasn't allowing it to mount on the phone side.

plug it in, pc sees it (* I can tell this from my log files *)

::back on the phone::
hit menu
hit notifications
-- in the notifications list hit the usb message
-- select mount

::back on the pc::
the mount is available

Has anyone had issues even getting the USB notification to show up on their phone at all?

each time I try connecting my Droid to my laptop it shuts down and goes back and forth between a black screen and the Motorola white logo on black seen when you first turn on the Droid.

Is there a simple setting I am missing or is my phone bugged? The issues discussed above with getting the device to be recognized by Windows USB controller are still a far distance for me at this point!

I'm having the same (similar) issue. My Droid worked Friday night when I synced about 200 songs over from my laptop and was recognizing the device every time I plugged it in (mounted flawlessly). Now every time I try to plug it in I get the following in the header bar:
- Turn off USB storage
- Preparing SD card
- USB connected.

BTW - I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (cuz I haven't convinced the spouse to migrate all the household to Win 7).

At lunch today - I uninstalled every usb connection under Device Manager, and upon plugging the Droid in...tada...It worked.

Before we all yell hooray, after unplugging the device, it's back to the previous functionality. If I have to do this every time I want to sync content, I'm gonna chuck this thing through the VZW store window and go back to my BB arrrggghhh.....

One other peculiar tidbit - on some occasions (not all) When I plug the D in, I get the Windows AutoPlay pop-up. I've even been able to select 'Open Folder to view files' and get the explorer window up (once I even got to music files in the sub-directory), but then it just poooooof disappears.

Has anyone found a permanent solution?

I still do not have my problem fixed. I spent 4 hours at the verizon store tring to figure the phone out. The guy at the verizon store went out of his way to help me. He was on the phone with verizon and motorolla for about 2 hours straight. The were not much help. They said they would email me some software fixes, but I still have not yet recieved anything.

I like the phone, but this syncing crap sucks. My phone still does not sync with my computer all the time. I have got my phone now so where it syncs up once out of every 4 tries. We tried different phones at the verizon store and they still were phiniky about syncing up. The tech support at verizon and motorolla did not seem to know any more than we did about the problem.

The guy at the store had windows xp on the stores computers and the 2 droid phones that we tried there, would sync up everytime with windows xp.

the trick is to remember that the SD card cannot be accessible on both the phone and the PC at the same time. You have to disconnect it from the phone before the PC can see it, and vice versa.

I've fumbled thru the drill several times and suspect it will be simple when I've done it a few more.<G>

Part of the confusion, i suspect, is using "mount" on the phone when what you want to do is mount it on the PC and un-mount it on the phone.

It seems that a lot of us are having the same problem. The only option that has work for me is to check the debugging feature.
Go to setting
Applications
Development
check USP debugging (it's supposed to be unchecked)
then proceed w/the mounting instructions

I got this from the motorola support forum (can't mount droid to pc thead): https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/16342?start=90&tstart=0

There is a guy in the moto forum that it's putting a list together for Motorola/google/verizon called the user's compiled master list -kind of wish list of droid issues.

I think I understand what you are asking: after you connect the Droid to your PC you cannot find it on the PC. Is that right? If so I had the same problem. First, after connect the USB to both phone and PC, pull down the very top bar on the Droid, the notification bar. You will find the USB connection. Tap on this and "mount" the SD card. Now go to "My Computer" (in windows) and click on every hard drive until you find the Droid. It shows up as a hard drive, not removable media, apparently. Hope I understood you correctly and that this helps.

Hi, I have done a search for this question already and have not found anyone with this problem yet.

Not sure if this is the right place or not.

I synced my droid to my computer and I selected the Mount option to sync my phone with my computer and my computer reconizes that something is hooked up to it. My problem is though that when the windows explorer box pops up and asks me what I want to do with my phone. I click open up device to view folders and then I get a message that says, please insert a disk into removable disk (f:).

For somereson my computer acts like there is no sd card in my phone. I checked my phone and my micro sd is in my phone. I have tried to reformat my sd, but my computer still says there is no disk in it.

Not sure if I am doing something wrong or what. My phone shows that I have 14 gb of available space for storage, so I assume that my sd card is working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you can understand what I am talking about. I am not the best at describing my problems sometimes.

Thanks Chico.

I had this exact same problem, until I read this thread. Here is the steps I did. After plugging the Droid into my Laptop USB port (Windows Vista Home Premium OS), my Droid beeped, indicating it connected. I clicked on the button at the very bottom of my home screen, selected Settings, then SD Card & Phone Settings. Selected Unmount SD Card. Go back to Home Screen. Drag down the Window Shade from the top. Click USB connected. Select Mount. This will open Vista's window about what you want to do with this drive, I selected Open Folder for Viewing. You can now copy, delete, whatever, files form your Laptop/PC to/from the Droid. When you are done, slide the Window shade down on the home screen again, and select Turn off USB Storage, then select Turn Off. These remounts the SD card for use within your Droid.

I hope this helps, and thanks to everyone for helping me fix this problem.
