Help Problems syncing droid to PC.

I'm having the same (similar) issue. My Droid worked Friday night when I synced about 200 songs over from my laptop and was recognizing the device every time I plugged it in (mounted flawlessly). Now every time I try to plug it in I get the following in the header bar:
- Turn off USB storage
- Preparing SD card
- USB connected.

BTW - I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate (cuz I haven't convinced the spouse to migrate all the household to Win 7).

At lunch today - I uninstalled every usb connection under Device Manager, and upon plugging the Droid in...tada...It worked.

Before we all yell hooray, after unplugging the device, it's back to the previous functionality. If I have to do this every time I want to sync content, I'm gonna chuck this thing through the VZW store window and go back to my BB arrrggghhh.....

One other peculiar tidbit - on some occasions (not all) When I plug the D in, I get the Windows AutoPlay pop-up. I've even been able to select 'Open Folder to view files' and get the explorer window up (once I even got to music files in the sub-directory), but then it just poooooof disappears.

Has anyone found a permanent solution?

I have exactly this problem with my HTC Hero (UK version) connecting to my Windows 7 Prof 64 bit portable. It works fine with the Win XP box at home. This is driving me nuts. It worked once for one day when the portable was brand new. Since then I've been going in the same circles that everyone else with this problem seems to be going around.

Any help gratefully received... I'm at a dead loss and expect there is now accumlated registry rubbish thats not helping.

Ta.

Sounds like it. Moved this thread to the Droid section. Being so new, you'll most likely have better luck here since the Droid is the only one running 2.0 currently.

It's not just the Droid. I am having this exact problem with an HTC Hero (upgraded to most recent firmware on the HTC Support page).

Works fine on my Home WinXP box... but going round the "Mount -> Preparing SD -> USB Connected (but not mounted loop)" with a very brief flash of the FAT32 on the Windows Explorer icon if your watching closely - that's on a multicored Windows 7 Profession 64 bit installation.

This must be a Vista problem, honestly. Windows7 connects by openning the top menu and mounting the SD card. That's it.

Well I don't have and never have had a Vista machine. The problem I am having is with an HTC Hero connected to a 64 bit Windows 7 Machine.

When you say "Windows7 connects by openning the top menu and mounting the SD card." I assume that you mean that the user connects to Windows 7 using the 'top menu" on the *phone* to mount the SD card though what you wrote makes it sound like Windows 7 has taken the initiative.

When I go through the normal process that I have gone through many times (and that still works on my XP machine at home) if I have a "Please insert disk..." dialog box open, the SD card opens up briefly with a file listing and then disappears... (when connected to my windows 7 box).

Try this guy's. I found an app called mountusb. Just search the market and download it. It works great. No need for dragging the top window shade menu down anymore..

I hope it works on 64bit or Vista. :)

i read on the motorola site that this is a windows vista problem. You "may" need to go to the motorola droid support site, and download a driver for vista from them.

i can't test it, i use Linux. Good Luck. If you see microsoft tell them i said, "suck me!"

There are 2 drivers just above those. this part:

The motoconnect isn't the phone syncing app its just a widget that downloads new drivers when they are available.

its probably a zip file. I would bet you could extract the zip file, and then install just the driver but i don't know.

I think to install just the driver you go to the device list, and go to properties for the droid device and then click on one of the tabs and select update driver, then browse to where you extracted the zip file and tell it ok. It should list the driver in the window if you got the right location.

Same as you Chico, when I connect my new Droid to my PC it only asks for me to insert the card or disc and does not recognize it as anything more than a USB type of storage device that won't open. I have not found a solution to this either. I know on MP3 players there are settings for connection type but I have not found that on the Motorola DROID yet.

So you DID slide the top bar down and tap the "USB connected" option?

This will mount the sd card and make it show up in windows.

Don't use keyboard or monitor usb connections either, use the one directly from the PC.

you can backup all your contact info, sms logs, and phone logs with the phone. The astro filemanager allows you to backup apps and settings. I just set my phone to backup all my logs to /sdcard/Backups/ then use astro to backup there too. Then i can backup to a pc.

i havent tried restoring anything yet though. astro is free in the market.

When I plug in my USB cord, I don't get any "SYNC" information. It brings up the autoplay screen. I can go to explorer and moves file from the PC to the phone. Is there a SYNC page I am not getting.

How about for music as well as photos.
Jay:(

It seems that a lot of us are having the same problem. The only option that has work for me is to check the debugging feature.
Go to setting
Applications
Development
check USP debugging (it's supposed to be unchecked)
then proceed w/the mounting instructions

I got this from the motorola support forum (can't mount droid to pc thead): https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/16342?start=90&tstart=0

There is a guy in the moto forum that it's putting a list together for Motorola/google/verizon called the user's compiled master list -kind of wish list of droid issues.

I was trying to connect my Droid to my Vista and was having the issue with the promt of "insert disk into F:\ drive" Droidee's technique worked perfectly. All you need to do is make sure "USB debugging" is unchecked in the Applications > Development screen. Now my droid connects with no issues. Thanks Droidee

I'm running XP and I'm having the same problem as JPMartin86 describes. I've tried everything described in this thread without success. Could this be an Android software bug? Do the developers read this forum? I'd like to hear from them.

well i came home today and tryed syncing again and nothing. After i restart my computer and go through all the steps it works untill i close the folder. whats going on here....

I decided it was a spongebob "opposite day" and turned "ON" the USB degugging feature in the development section under settings / applications. And guess what... yup; everything connected to my Windows7 PC

I waiting for my (really cool music / file synch tool) doubleTwist to finish synching my iTunes and pictures with my Mot/Android as I type this

I'll let it finish before turning USB Debugging off to see what happens next.

I found this solution as a temporary work around. As someone said earlier in the post, if you remove the driver and then mount, it will work. What I do is:

1. Disable the device "Motorola A855 USB Device" in device manager
2. Mount the SD Card on the phone
3. Enable the device "Motorola A855 USB Device" in device manager

This works for me. It seems like there is something wrong with the Vista driver.

Hi, I have done a search for this question already and have not found anyone with this problem yet.

Not sure if this is the right place or not.

I synced my droid to my computer and I selected the Mount option to sync my phone with my computer and my computer reconizes that something is hooked up to it. My problem is though that when the windows explorer box pops up and asks me what I want to do with my phone. I click open up device to view folders and then I get a message that says, please insert a disk into removable disk (f:).

For somereson my computer acts like there is no sd card in my phone. I checked my phone and my micro sd is in my phone. I have tried to reformat my sd, but my computer still says there is no disk in it.

Not sure if I am doing something wrong or what. My phone shows that I have 14 gb of available space for storage, so I assume that my sd card is working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you can understand what I am talking about. I am not the best at describing my problems sometimes.

Thanks Chico.

Im having the exact same problem... except my computer doesnt even recognize my phone. it jsut tells me USB device not recognized. and just to say this now the notification bar doesnt even have a mount option. the thing isnt charging threw usb. it deosnt even talk to the computer. It used to work perfectly thats how i got all my music on it. its just stopped working on every single computer

The original issue that Chico was referring to was when he tried to "mount" the SD card to the computer via USB (and in turn "un-mounting" the card from the phone), it will "mount" temporarily to the computer but for only a short time.

During this short time, the computer shows that a new drive is available.

But immediately after it's "mounted" to the computer, the sd card will "re-mount" back to the phone, therefore making it unavailable to the computer since the card can't be "mounted" to both the computer and phone at the same time. The computer is still registering that it's connected, but it isn't available.

Droidee's solution works as a work-around to this problem.

Ok, so I first came to this forum looking for a solution and left with more questions. However, it did get me to start thinking :). Chico, I too have had the same issue with my pc not reading the sd card. For starters, I am running windows vista 64. Second, I was able to successfully sync the droid with my computers several times prior to today. I only came across the pc not reading the sd card issue after i decided to do a little "house cleaning" on my pc and uninstalled blackberry desktop. Before the droid, I had a storm 1 and had blackberry desktop installed and running. I believe this to be the missing link between the droid and my pc. Guess theres some drivers or software with blackberry desktop that allow for smartphone's with sd cards to communicate with vista (the storm has an onboard sd card also). If you want to try it, the link is BlackBerry - Desktop Software for PC
It does ask you to connect a blackberry for first, one time initialization once you start the program, but im not sure if this is necessary. Since i had my old strom, I followed the directions tho.
Hope this helps. I was goin crazy wondering how something that once worked just appeared to randomly stop working

Hi I had the same issue has everyone above and I am running windws vista home and the above worked just fine and I got in just fine so try that and see what happens

thansk very much

I enabled debugging and voila it works! I must have been real tired as to have missed the original post lol. Got a warning message on the phone stating something to the sense that debugging is for development only and that files may be transferred freely without warnings and such blah blah blah... I wonder if its because vista's security that the original issue with syncing exists...
