Root Problems with boot loop

Do you know what software version you were using previously?

I used the "2.10.405.2 INIT.D ROM" for some time, and it was fine. The 2.29.405.2 one came out just before I switched to DeFroST, so I only had a couple of days with it, but Teppic74's a solid dev and I'm sure either that or the 2.29.405.5 one would be fine. You could just use that last one as the most recent. As I say, don't bother downloading a radio - you only want to flash those if you actually have a problem with the radio performance. I am of course assuming that you had Froyo (2.2) already, and so have a Froyo radio installed. Actually I'm also assuming that your phone is GSM - if not, don't flash anything I've suggested and let us know immediately!

i know i am starting to sound a bit special now but gsm, i think so, i got my desire in July and it had the 2.2 up date on it

None of us need to do this, in the strict sense :D

And remember, we were all new to this at one time, often not that long ago either (the Desire is my first smartphone, and I bought it last July, rooted some time in August). And the way we learn is precisely by doing it - and taking advice from those who've been doing it longer (SUroot and Rastaman-FB are a couple of names that come to my mind).

If it has a SIM card, it's GSM.

In North America there are some non-GSM networks (CDMA) which also sell a version of the Desire, but software is not compatible between GSM and CDMA, and it can be quite dangerous to mix them up. That's why I thought it best to check - we tend to assume GSM, and sometimes a CDMA poster doesn't realise that.

Actually if it had 2.2 in July I'm pretty sure that's GSM!

Also I'm guessing you might be British, from that use of the venacular ("sounding a bit special") ;)

Oh you guys. I think most of us are about the same level. I learn stuff from you lot most days. I'm no expert or anything. I just put bits and pieces together from people such as your good selves.
 
Once yopu've given it root permissions press "problems" and download busy box. After that simply have a play and set it up as you wish.
 
Use Ti Backup's batch mode to back up all apps and data.

Then boot back into recovery and take a backup from there (the nandroid).

Then connect to a computer and back up your card onto that.

That way you are thoroughly backed-up. If you change ROMs you need to be a little careful about what you restore from Ti - apps and their data are fine, system settings usually shouldn't be copied between ROMs. But this should give you a fair "get out of jail" kit.
