problems with Cyanogenmod - is there a better ROM?

Hi All,
After reading some of this thread (and other stuff), I'm starting to wonder if CyanogenMod-7.1 was such a good idea for my Samsung SGS2 (international). I rooted it first using Odin3 v1.85 to install CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-v4.1-CWM4.

I finally managed to root my phone and install CM and I loved it at first but I'm noticing some problems. So far:
-- no data connection (3G, around here)
-- no MARKET application
-- no thumbnail/preview in the GALLERY screen
-- I'm guessing I'll find more

I read that GAPPS would install Android's MARKET app but I haven't found a link to download it yet. And no idea how to get the data connection back.

(sigh) ... Is there a better ROM out there that I should be looking at?? Any ideas would be appreciated. TIA.

Thanks, ironass.

Honestly, I'd be perfectly happy to revert to the factory OS for now. My whole problem seems to have started when I foolishly tried a "firmware upgrade" in KIES, so I'd love to find a way to "undo" that. The phone was an unlocked international version.

BTW, I saw that thread you mentioned and it seems that VILLIAN has a few fans so I'm probably going to try that if I can't think of a better plan.

Appreciate your help.

Sam

You just should try differents, it's up to everyone what they want from their rom. I like Miui rom, easy to use but not so configuratable as cyanogenmod.

Thanks Propwnage. I found MIUI and going to try it out but I've noticed a lot of my apps crashing under CyanogenMod-7.1. So maybe I need more than just a new ROM (Cyanogen, Miui, Villain, Revolution -- these are all ROMs, right?).

Do I need to change my Kernel too? With ODIN? Before or after the ROM?

Don't mean to sound so ... well, blank. The more I read on here and elsewhere on the web, the less I seem to know :-P

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S2 with the following configuration right now:
Model#: GT-I9100
Android Ver: 2.3.7
Baseband Ver: I9100XXKI3
Kernel Ver: 2.6.35.7-g1e46077 atinm@wolverine #1
Mod Ver: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-GalaxyS2
Build#: GWK74
Cheers.

Found MIUI and installed it.
Same issues as I had with CM7.1 - no data, some apps behaving weird, many apps crashing repeatedly.

Nice wallpaper though :)

So I'm missing a piece of this puzzle. Is it the Kernel??

Your kernel is not the problem, as both of the ROM's you have tried, install their own customised kernels.

Did you however, do a "DOUBLE FULL WIPE" of your phone before installing the new ROM or was it just a case of flashing the new one over the top of the existing crud?

Failing that, did you make a nandroid (CWM) backup of the previous ROM with all it's crud and then try and flash it on an entirely different ROM?

Since MIUI, which is based on CyanogenMod, and CyanogenMod itself are both totally different OS's to the normal Samsung based ones.... the above is vital to prevent the sort of problems you are experiencing.

Hope this helps. :D
