Problems with HTC Hero - Solutions?

Hello all,

I've registered so I can ask you good people about my HTC Hero.

I've had it since May and I've tried so hard to get on with it and enjoy it, but there are fundamental problems which are hampering my enjoyment.

I'm based in the UK and am with Orange.

Ok here goes:

1) Battery life. I can only get 12 hours moderate use out of it if I'm lucky. I've changed WCDMA preferred to GSM only, but this hasn't made a big difference. Was I right to do this?

2) Random signal drop. In places where I know I have full signal, and my phone SAYS I have full signal, I sometimes cannot place or receive calls for up to 15 minute periods. Texts also do not send or receive. Twice now I have had this happen when I needed to make an urgent call. The phone simply beeps and says "Call Ended". So frustrating.

3) Random loss of 3G/GSM/internet (not the best with technical terms sorry!). Sometimes I'll be in a place where I have full signal and 3G, and all of a sudden the phone will drop the G and just have 'normal' signal. So I can call and text no problem, but internet is totally out of use for up to 30 minutes or until I reset my phone.

4) Delayed text message receival. I would say that 3 in 10 of my messages takes around an hour to come through. As soon as I text someone, three or four messages arrive from them asking why I'm ignoring them! I use HandcentSMS.

Thanks for any help!

i have a hero on O2 in the UK. I had the same delayed SMS problem when I used Handcent. When I uninstalled it I started getting 99% of my messages straight away.

Welcome aboard Matt!

Have you updated to the most recent firmware? Pull up Menu/Settings/About phone and post the "build number" displayed here to confirm the version currently installed.

Ooops - sorry, that is me!

I didn't realize I had two accounts (thought one of the registrations had failed) so logged in on autopilot.

Apologies! This is the OP!

--------

1 - I get about 2 days - with BT off, GPS off, no scanning open WIFI networks, Not auto updates except facebook (2 hours). Weather/Mail/GMail etch all set to manual

2 - Totally get this - just thought it was my house and work as they have shocking signals with all providers. But the wife has orange and the her signal is at least a few bars better than me all the time.

3 - See answer 2. Thought about upgrading the radio but not sure if the firmware update would make more issue.

4 - Again I think Handcent is the issue here I've noticed it more an more and was going to uninstall (also due to the numerous updates)

On a personal level I love my little hero but it will be exchanged for a new phone next year.
