Root Proximity sensor question

is there a way to set the proximity sensor to do more and in different apps? For example I would like to set it to skip to the next song while I'm listening to music in the car

Like a shake to skip sort of thing? I'm sure its possible, but I'm not aware of any currently available apps/ect to do so.

Depending on what ROM your on, you might be able to hold either the UP or DOWN volume buttons to skips songs with the screen off.

So from what I can tell the proximity sensor can only be used to turn the screen on and off while making a call. Seems like a waste of a nifty feature.

Far as I know/can tell that is a great feature. With out that every time you were on the phone you would start messing up your home screen, possibly doing worse to the phone, all without realizing it.

I have the samsung galaxy prevail and it does not have a proximity sensor and the screen disables on calls, which is a pain in the ass if you need to dial numbers or extensions.
