Root Question about APK and CM7 NOOB

Hey guys I got my EVO in march and rooted it shortly after and I just decided to flash my first ROM and its been a pretty fun experience! I've been searching threads endlessly in search of some answers to some problems I've been having with Cyanogen 7. First, what is an APK? My wireless tether doesn't seem to be working and in one thread someone said to get an APK file and put it somewhere and do something. I'm new to rooting so I'm not familiar with the terms. I downloaded the APK but not sure what do. Do I flash it like a ROM?

Please help!
 
It says to check show log and I'm seeing a few boxes saying Wifi firmware failed, configuring driver, activating WiFi interface etc. Lots of "failed".
 
try wiping dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps. which app and version did you try? the link above has the latest wifi tether app version 3.0.

wifi_tether_v3_0-pre14.apk is what I used. Will wiping erase everything I've done so far?
 
no because you are not wiping data. try that first and then maybe try an earlier release. also i just realize that you are on cm7. it has a built in tethering feature which is found in phone settings/wireless and network/ tethering and portable hotspot. it should work for 3g but i think that it will not work for 4g.

Ok well I deleted the market version and the cm7 has the exact same problems in the show log. So I'm gonna wipe dalvik and see what happens
 
Alright, well I went and did a Dalvik cache wipe and rebooted. Now, it seems like whenever I try to start wifi tethering it freezes and reboots. This kind of blows. Any idea of what I need to do? Do I need to flash some other parts? I think I remember reading about addition flashes with CM7.
 
Well I wiped everything, re-downloaded CM7 with a faster WiFi connection and redid it. I also flashed the Tiamat Kernel, reBooted it up and Wifi tether works flawlessly. This is so addicting.

i know right! well i'm glad that you joined us flashaholics. and by the way tiamat is a great kernel. i hope you are getting as good of a battery life that i get with tiamat kernels.

So far I'm extremely impressed. I saw a huge difference today using wifi tether, I think I almost doubled my battery life it seems.
