Root Question about Custom Roms

I am thinking of flashing the Velocity Rom to my phone and I was wondering if there is a way to go back to the original Android OS if I need / want to in the future. Also would it be wiser to go to Froyo, if possible, as opposed to going to Velocity?

Yes it is possible to go back to original. All you need is to be rooted. The easiest way is z4root. Then get ROM manager from the market. Once installed flash the clockworkmod recovery or alternate recovery. Read into the recoveries to see which one you want to use. Once recovery is flashed, from ROM manager make a backup of your current ROM. This enables you to boot into recovery and restore to your original OS. MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A BACKUP! I'm not gonna go through all these procedures. It will be best if you research. You will learn more. However if you have any problems feel free to ask for help. We will be glad to help you. :-)

Oh and about choosing between Froyo and Velocity: I like the idea of playing around with ROM's like Velocity. As far as we know we can all have Froyo next month. But that's just my opinion.

No, No, No, a thousand times NO!! Don't use ROM Manager. It does not work properly anymore. Please please use one of the alternate methods of flashing recovery, and for most reliable results, use Amon Ra, not Clockwork. Clockwork has developed an unreliable track record with alternate ROMs of late. A little research will show that there are many reported issues with both ROM Manager and Clockwork.

Velocity would probably be the best choice for you at this time, simply because the Froyo version is not really ready for use by the casual user. Also, take a look at Punisher v0.1 or Raptor v0.1. Both of those are very good ROMs as well.

And good luck to you. I hope you have as much fun learning all this as I have had. And the guys here and particularly on the IRC channel are always ready and willing to help you out should you get into trouble.

So wait, what are the issues with Clockwork? I think that came with the Rom Manager app I got off the market. I haven't played with it yet, simply because I didn't want to mess up with phone.

One more question, how often are the custom roms updated? I know it changes depending on their developers, but on average how often does it happen?

I know I've "heard" of problems with ROM Manager, but I have never had any issues using it to just flash a recovery. I've used it many many times without any errors. I used it yesterday matter of fact.

If you use apps2sd. Clockwork cannot mount sd:ext to wipe the ext partion. Thus when flashing another rom that uses apps2sd you will possibly get boot loops. I've encountered this problem many time in IRC while helping people. (4 times in one hour a matter of fact. :p)

Clockwork is a good way to flash the alternate recovery (Aloha 1.2.5). That's the only thing I use it for. To flash a ROM i use the custom recovery.
