Root Question about Rom Backups

Alright so I'm just getting started in all the business but I have successfully rooted my phone and I have the ClockworkMod Recovery. Next logical step is to flash a sweet Rom... but beforehand I had a question.

So before you load a new rom, you have to back it up in recovery mode.
So say I load Cyanogen or whatever, and I don't like it (don't see this happening but stay with me here), how do I load my stock backup ROM?

Do I just use ROM manager, boot into recovery mode and then load it?
What if I don't have ROM manager? Is there a way to reflash my stock backup without it?
(Or alternatively if you can tell me how to do everything with ROM tools, that would be fine too)

Sorry if these questions might be a bit obvious or listed somewhere but I'm just trying to take every precaution and don't wanna screw up my phone (I have no backup, and don't really wanna drop big money for a new phone)

Also another question: I see you can find ROMs straight from Rom manager.
Should I be installing ROMs from there, or would you guys recommend finding the ROMs that are on the forum, and loading them using a computer?

Thanks a lot you guys, I just wanna learn more!

I would suggest only using ROM Manager to just manage your ROM backups. If you wan't to find ROM's that are compatible with the "V" go here [Reference Guide] Optimus V Modding (READ THIS TO GET STARTED) - Android Forums . Don't use ROM manager to boot into recovery as this might cause your "V" to go into a boot loop. you need to go into recovery to make a backup of your current ROM in case you accidentally mess something up(never use the factory reset in the phones privacy setting, only use the factory reset in your recovery). This gives you a backup of you system that you can restore good as new. Hold home button+volume down button, then also the power button. Let go when you see the LG logo. It will boot into your recovery with 9 options. To scroll use the up/down volume buttons. Go to backup and restore. Select using the camera button. Select backup. It will proceed to make a backup of your system. If you want the best Gingerbread ROM out right now go here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-rom-cm7-green-machine-theme.html#post2971206 and download the latest update,Gapps(google apps) and the theme if you might like to try it. Put all 3 zip files on your SD card near the bottom of the list of file folders. In recovery select wipe cache partition, then go to advanced/Dalvik cache. Hit back button. Select wipe data/factory reset, once done go to mounts and format. Format boot, system, data, cache(be careful not to select sd card). when done hit back button and go to install zip from sd card/select zip from sd card. Scroll up to get to bottom Of sd card quicker. Select the ROM first. when it's done installing,go back to select zip from sd card and install the gapps. When that is done select reboot system now. It might take 5 to 10 min. to totally reboot. After you get done setting up you market and WiFi and you got all the apps installed how and where you want them and got all your apps backed up using Titanium Backup.Reboot your phone a couple of times then reboot into your recovery. Make a backup of this Rom. When done go to install zip from sd card and go to sd card and select the Green Machine Theme(if you would like to). When done, boot system now. Now you can overclock the CPU if you want. If your phone reboots on it's own then your CPU speed is too high Go down in speed(I like No frills CPU but that's just me). If you want to delete a backup without having to go into your recovery(sd card getting kind of crowded),the only thing I will trust ROM manager to do To my optimus "V", go to manage and restore backups and select the backup you want to delete(just leave one to fall back on). If you want to restore a ROM go in to recovery and do the complete wipe mentioned above then go to backup and restore/restore and select the the ROM( based on the time stamp) you want to install. When done, reboot into system now. Note:If your just flashing an update of a ROM then you only need to wipe cache partition, and Dalvik partition. Also wouldn't hurt to download a battery temp monitor.

yogi-4 has a great tutorial on how to install a custom ROM.You would probably want to start on step #14
