Root Question about rooting.

I am reading in here about the 1 Click Root app in the market place and I am reading in my latest PC World magazine about an app called CyanogenMod 6.1. Just curious which of these (or any others) are real easy for newbies to start with?

Also, is there anything you can't do with a rooted X...any purchased apps that will no longer run or anything like that?

Never had an interest in rooting mine, but now the kids have IPods and IPads, looking at opening up my Wifi Hotspot on my X from rooting to let them use that data connection. Just want to make sure before I do this I will not be loosing out on anything.

TIA!

Cyanogenmod is a custom ROM, not an app. Just look around and download z4root and one-click root your phone. All your old apps will work fine. After you root, head on over to the market and get WIRELESS TETHER for ROOT USERS and you'll have the kids online in no time.

Thanks for the help!

Does rooting your phone wipe it? i.e. does it put it back to a fresh new state, with nothing installed? Just wondered if all my installed apps will have to be reinstalled.

Rooting just gives you administrator-like privileges (access to filesystem) on your device, it doesn't delete any previously installed apps, contacts, texts, etc.
