Root Question about Steps To Flash A New ROM

SButler

Newbie
I have been looking around the All Things Root Forum for the past couple of hours and couldn't find the answers to my questions so if they are in another thread that I missed I apologize.

I just rooted my Evo last week and Flashed A ROM to it. Everything works fine but i have found another ROM I really like and want to give it a try. But before I do I have a few questions.

I want to make sure that the steps taken are correct in flashing another Rom. So if what im reading is right I need to go into Recovery an do a Nandroid Backup, then place the Calklin_s Format all on My sd card and Flash it just like i would a ROM or an Update?. After doing this do I still need to wipe Dalvik, Cache and data? Once these steps are done do I then place the new zip file for the ROM I want to flash on my SD and follow the same steps for flashing a rom in the rooting for dummies( great sticky BTW).

Once I'm done flashing the new ROM and I want to flash a new Kernel do I place the kernel in the root of my sd card in the actual data or dcmi folder and follow the flashing kernel section?

Thanks for any help, so far everything has gone good with rooting and Flashing and i would rather ask the questions then assume and brick my phone.:D

Welcome to the forums Sbutler. To answer your questions:

1. Yes, you flash Calkulin's Format All like you would a ROM or Kernel

2. No, you do not need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, or data. These are some of the things that get wiped when using Format All.

3. Correct. You place the ROM you desire to flash in the root directory (top level of sd card, not in any folders) of your sd card, and YES, ROOTING For Dummies + Extras IS a great sticky!

4. No. You also place kernels you wish to flash in the root directory of your sd card and flash the same way you would a ROM or Format All. Before you flash the kernel of your choosing or whenever you switch kernels, wipe dalvik cache and cache.

Hope this helps you.

Ok so I want to try the Destroyer ROM. After i complete all of the steps above i see there are other files like theme and update and gapps.Would the steps to put all of these in place after flashing the actual ROM just be Flash Reboot Flash Reboot Flash reboot and so on? I guess i want to make sure i just flash the files on top of the ROM for them to take place right? Thanks for the help.

If you are new to flashing, my suggestion would be to try a couple of sense roms as there is not as much to getting them up and running. Destroyer is based on a beta release of Cyanogen Mod and still has a few bugs(4g and Hdmi) that they are working out. If you want to go ahead, then wipe data/factory reset, wipe davlik-cache, flash the rom zip, reboot phone, verify it boots fully, reboot to recovery, wipe davlik-cache, flash gapps, reboot phone. you should be ready to go after that. When you sign into google, it will ask you what google apps you want to install.

Yeah thats what i thought as well after reading a little more on it I think I'll try Kings Ultra Froyo. if i want to flash a theme after i flash the ROM as just do the same as stated above? What kernel do you recommend to run with the ROM?
Thanks

This stuff gets addicting I see so many good ROM's I want to flash them all. I guess its good i have 2 EVO's. I really like Kings Unleashed Ultra R2 I thingk i will keep it as my Daily for my Business phone right now.:D

I recommend Netarchy kernels for sense roms. I have used 4.3.1-CFS-Havs-SBC in the past though some shy away from SBC kernels due to the trickle charging scare that is out there. I have never had an issue with it and use SBC on the current kernel I use now with CM7. To flash a theme, just wipe davlik-cache and flash the theme you want.

It is very addicting. My wife is always telling me to stop messing with my phone. :)

She picks mine up once in a while when it is closer than hers so she can make a call and always sees something different :)

One more quick question I am in the middle of doing this now I dont need to format the phone or the SD card again right Just flash the format all zip and then reboot and flash the new rom? I already did nand.

Ok so put both zip files on my Sd card at the same time? Can i remove the Rom i wont be using or just leave it as it wont hurt anything.

You can leave it unless you need the room on the card. Transfer both to your sdcard via usb. Reboot to recovery, flash Caulkins Format All, flash the rom zip, reboot and enjoy

Done everything went fine thanks for the help everyone. This ROM seems faster then the one I was on. Do you think I should Flash a kernel? If so which one?

For Sense ROMs I would use Netarchy toastmod 4.3.2 cfs nosbc HAVS more kernel, it is the one I use and it give great battery life and it is stable, although not all kernels work will all phone so you may need to do a little bit of experimenting, if this one is unstable try the same kernel but the HAVS less version.

Here is a link to the R3 page here which has a link to download it on xda.

Ok so now i like the Kings Ultra so much I want to flash my other EVO. I think my wife will truly hang me by the end of the day. Too much fun.:D

Yeah it is i was running Koni's Elite II before this one it was alright but nowhere close to this one. I'm going to flash a kernel to it and then move on to my other EVO to play with something new on it. I think i might go from the R2 im running now to R3 and toss in a different kernel. This is way easier then it looks when you start doing it. I will definently say follow what everyone on these forums say READ READ READ and double check yourself on each step and all will go smooth.

Oh yeah and ask questions!!

Thanks guys ill ask questions if I run into any trouble with the kernels.

I'm new at rooting also and have a couple of questions. I'm currently running Kings R2 and LOVE it. Questions though as I don't want to take any chances of messing up irrevocably! 1. Kings' been kind enough put some extras on my sdcard for fun - do I just transfer the zip to the root of sd then reboot and flash the zip? For example: flash_me_for_5mb_cap_mms.zip 2. If I want a specific Sprint app back - he has it on there in an apk file - how do I get it back to my phone? Do I just move it to where the other apk files are and 'open' it? Thanks!

Using the Netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nosbc-havs-more can i still use overclock widget to change the levels of the cpu?

I'm pretty sure you can navigate to it using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer (if you bought it) and click on it and it will give you the option to install. If this doesn't work there is another way that is harder and I'm not quite sure how to do. I have never re-installed one of the Sprint apps so I'm not sure but this will probably work.

I did just what you are saying on accident. In ES File Explorer there should be a file with the stock sprint apps. If you open the file and click on the particular app you want it will ask if you would like to install the app. other then that i'm with Urge as i don't know the other way to do it. Go on xda they will have the answer. I have seen it before I just don't remember where.
