Question about the emoji keyboard

KyrstiC

Lurker
So I have a Galaxy S4 with android version 4.4.2 and for the life of me I cannot get the android emojis on my phone. When I install the google keyboard and go into settings/add dictionary its not there. I tried installing the jelly 4.2. My phone is not rooted or anything fancy like that, I just want my darn emojis.

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum, I've never actually posted here before.

Simple solution - look in Play for an emoji keyboard.

Simple problem - if the recipient isn't set up to receive emojis, all they'll receive when you send an emoji is punctuation. (The old "smiley" is a colon [:] and a close-paren[)], it's not a picture of a smiling face. The receiving software converts that character pair to the face.)

(Forums work differently, using actual pictures, because they can't control what browser you'll be using. But emoticons on phones are mostly punctuation translated by an app.)

I could do that but I really like the android ones and I know my phone is compatible because I can receive and see the android emojis. Oh well though, it is what it is.

When you have the stock keyboard up, press and hold the microphone key. A bar will show up and toward the right you will see a smiley face. Click on that and then you will see the emoji. Hope that helps you.

Yeah, it's the mic button on Samsung keyboard, I can't figure out how to get it on the Google keyboard. But this will work, I really appreciate it!

So I am having a similar problem. When I'm in messaging I would like to use the emojis. However, when I press the microphone button, the smiley icon does not appear. Do you have any idea why this is occurring? I have a galaxy s4 and it has android 4.4.2. Thankyou

It might be a software problem. Is your phone rooted? If it's not and you don't care about that stuff, depending on your carrier you might be able to update the software.

Is there a way to make the emoji keyboard default? My daughter holds the microphone key to get the emojis but when she exits from text messages and goes back in the keyboard has changed back. Thank you.

this is an easy fix, it does not have to do with the software or anything. It's just a matter of the settings. Go to settings > my Phone > language & input > turn off Google voice typing. That would now allow the emoticons button to permanently be on the keyboard without having to hold down on the microphone.

Thank you so much Iv been wondering why the emoji button disappeared for months can't believe how easy it was to fix

I signed up JUST to comment on this. I have no way to turn off google voice typing on my phone. I've gone through my phone, and I don't have that option anywhere! It's very frustrating because that's the fix EVERYONE gives, but it isn't available to me. I have a Galaxy s4.

KyrstiC, if you haven't find a solution yet, visit http://hotemoji.com to check that your phone can "see" emojis. If you see many emojis on that page (they are really text symbols, displayed as pictures), then you may just copy-and-paste them into the any app or SMS.

Settings > My Device > Language and Input > Google voice typing > Tap ? (top right) > Google Voice & Audio Activity > scroll down to Turn Voice & Audio Activity On or Off and follow the instructions.

Alright, basically I have Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo and there is no emoji keyboard even if I hold the microphone button... I have checked my settings and everything, I have been waiting for a solution almost a month now but there is absolutely nothing. Can anyone help me with that?

There appears to be a difference with Android Version 5.0.1. I have 2 Galaxy S4 i9505 running V 5.0.1 and 1 has the Google keyboard option and the other doesn't. The Google keyboard has the emoji's on the left between the keyboard and the message line. The other phone has the Samsung keyboard and to get the emoji's you need to press and hold the mic icon as per instructions in earlier Post.

Well, to be honest I don't really get it. The Google keyboard is a voice keyboard, it records your voice and it types while recording. The Samsung keyboard is the main keyboard which should have the emoji option, right? Now how I'm supposed to activate the emojis through the Google Keyboard which simply records the voice?
Plus, when I use the Google Keyboard there is just a microphone which I have to press in case I want to type that way! However you said that the Google Keyboard has the emojis on the left between the searching line and the keyboard.

When using the Google TTS and keyboard, you activate by touching the mic icon then speak your message and Google types as you speak. Alongside the message line there is a staple icon - tap that and a Menu opens which enables you to attach what you want. When in the TTS mode (the mic is active and you are speaking and Google is typing) touch your Menu button (left side) and a Menu shows and there is an option to insert smilies. They appear as symbols - not emoji's. Hope this helps you sort it out.

As you said there is a microphone which I have to press so Google can type. On the left side of the microphone there is a small "settings" icon which shows the settings of the keyboard. My version is 4.2.2 so probably that is why nothing is working. Thanks for responding and showing up with new solutions.

So, all of these replies seem helpful but haven't worked for me. I don't have the same keyboard as the people that the mic button trick works for. Is there a way to change the keyboard it's always had(Samsung?) to the other one? I have auto update turned on and have run it myself and my phone and it says it's up to date. I'm not sure what version it's running. None of it says "software version." Is it called something else? Android version? I can receive emojis but all I can send are the old green aliens and only Samsung's see those.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I figured out it's running 5.0.1 which an earlier post mentioned the Google keyboard is not available in. Any way to change that?

I can't understand your problem. I have just tested a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-i9505 Android 5.0.1. Settings > My Device > Language and Input > Samsung Keyboard > English (US) > Qwerty Keyboard > Check what other settings you require > Return to Desktop. Tap Messaging > Tap Write Icon > you should see your keyboard and above the keyboard (on the left) is the Emoji Icon. When I tap on that, the lower screen fills up with emojis - faces - objects > animals > buildings > symbols - in fact 760 available emojis!!!
My phone is the Samsung available in New Zealand and is unlocked, unrooted and uses the standard Samsung Version 5.0.1 Android. If your phone is carrier supplied (Vodafone, TMobile, Sprint etc.) it may have dedicated software without emojis but I find that hard to believe.
Have I mis-read your problem? You said you found that your phone is Version 5.0.1 Android. When you open the phone to Desktop, does it show a screen with Time and date at the top and below that a white bar with Google on the left and a Microphone icon on the right and Apps icons at the bottom of that?
If so, Tap on the Google word and your Qwerty keyboard should open. At the bottom of the keyboard in the middle is your Space key. On the right of the Space key there is a key with a Full stop (Period) and a small ? mark with 2 dots (..). Press and hold the key and a menu window will open with the word Sym on the top right. Tap that and an emoji icon should show on the key to the Left of the Space bar.
Tap that emoji key now and you should see the full availability of Emojis a total of 154 in the Google mode. I hope this explains what I have on my Samsung and that you have the same.

I think you undersood but none of what works for you is available on mine... I have the same keyboard option across the board from Text to Yahoo to Google. I attached a pic of the keyboard. Maybe that'll help!
