Root Question about USB tether....

I posted this in the support and troubleshooting forums and all I got was 153 views. Seems the only place to get real help is the root forums. :) Here is my post-

I plug my phone into the USB port on my computer, Enable USB tethering when it asks, and can never get internet connection working on the PC. It says right on the option that it uses my phones 3g connection to enable internet access. Does not indicate a need to be connected to a wi-fi network or anything. But it never works. Has anyone got their USB tether to work ever? Im not talking about the $30 a month wi-fi tether.

I'm sure usb tethering will go against the new rules since your are technically doing the same thing as wifi tether only with a cable. They probably will say it's still "stealing" from Sprint since usb tethering is a paid-for service. In the op he did mention he ain't paying for said service. Just my opinion though I could be wrong.

BINGO! sorry guys, but yes wired tethering is also against the new policy we have on tethering. basically if the app is blocked by sprint from the market then that means that they deem that app to be a violation of sprint's TOS (term of service).....sorry:(

Oh, I thought wired and wireless tethering were 2 separate things since when you plug your phone into a usb one of the options you can choose is usb tether. Figured if it was a part of the paid service it would be an app and not a generic option when plugging in your phone. I am aware of the new rules and would not go against them on purpose. And if I did have any questions about tethering- OF COURSE I pay $30 a month for the service. :)

wait sorry there was a wired tethering app floating around that is in violation of sprint TOS. most roms do have the hotspot hacked but that is also against sprint's TOS. so are you saying that you have sprint's hotspot and paying for the service? just a little confused now:o

Idk about that.... I asked the sprint reps when I got my evo about wired tether vs wireless, ans the response was simple... wired(usb) is not a locked feature, and sprint dosent charge for it, however, the wi-fi hotpot tether is a special service that u need to pay for..... I think the reason for this is with the usb tether, ur phone will not b able to use its network connection, just the 1 device connected to it, whereas with the wifi hotspot, u can connect up to 8 devices(and still use it on ur phone, so that technically makes 9 devices), thus the possibility of using waaaaay more data...

Ok, so no usb tether.... did u set up ur network connections on pc to use the phone as ur net connection?

The thing though Ocn, is Sprint UNBLOCKED CM's wired tethering application.

Search it in the market, its there:
ClockWorkMod Tether (no root)

Sprint allows it, so I think it can be openly discussed? Grey area
