Help Question about wifi hotspot for Android n00b

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I've only had my phone for a day. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, and I believe that if we wanted to use our phones as a mobile hotspot it cost extra and we had to have a special data plan for it.

I noticed on my skyrocket that there is an app that will allow you to use the phone as a hotspot. Can I use this with my grandfathered $30 unlimited data plan that I had with my iPhone or will it cost extra? Thanks for the help guys.

My understanding is that you are 'suppose' to have a tethering plan. However, I do not and tethering works. Same exact function on a friends Samsung Infuse is disabled and it asks him to get a tethering plan before its available. Maybe an oversight?

Also heard that there are 'apps' that will let you enable tethering... Have NOT found them myself yet... Maybe worth checking out?

Interesting that yours works. I have not tried

General disclaimer...

If att sees you are tethering and not on the tether plan they can and will automatically switch you.

Gertex, what app are you using? built-in tethering?

my understanding is that the tetheringmanager.apk monitors your tethering usage and should require you to be on a tethering plan before being able to tether via wifi.

i would double check my bill...

now if you're rooted, you can just disable that sucker and tether freely (subject to AT&T's monitoring).

I think they still have a way of finding out you are tethering even when rooted with the tetheringmanager ap removed
