Root Question for a themer

I'm playing around with the framework-res.apk just to see what I can come up with, but the one problem i'm having is with saving the images with an alpha channel. Most of the images in the framework file are 8-bit images. When I want to alter one, I increase the color to 24-bit, edit as needed and then decrease back down to 8-bit. When I go to resave, the version of PSP I have won't save an 8-bit image with an alpha channel.

Is there a free program out there that will allow me to save an 8-bit image with an alpha channel? Besides file size, is there any other reason I couldn't just leave them as 24-bit images? Does android require 8-bit only?
 
Joe should we be expecting sum awesome work out from you? For sum reason soon as i seen 8 bit i thought of the old school mario on NES, that would be a neat theme for MM =p
 
Not anytime soon. Right now i'm just starting to learn how to edit the framework file. So far all i've been doing is editing the stock theme to see what all is involved. I got a long way to go before I start making one from scatch.
 
Sounds like hard work, but id live to be able to do sumthing like that and put it out there for people
