Help Question: is sd card needed?

ponz

Newbie
Hello all:

Well, I couldn't wait for Sprint to get the Galaxy Nexus, so I went ahead and bought the GS2.

Do I really have to insert an SD card in order for my laptop to recognize the phone?? Surely not. I have read through all the threads I could find and everyone of them mentions mass storage. But - what if I simply want to see the phone or transfer pics from phone to laptop? OR more importantly transfer some tunes to my phone?

Perplexed,
Ponz

ps - I don't need to install a card for this do I??

Gs2 has 3 storage options
1. Phone memory (reserved for apps)
2. Internal sd/usb/mass storage (pre installed and non removable) for music, videos/whatever you want
3. External sd. For the same as the internal, just bigger

So you don't need to have an sd card. I assume what you read was referring to the internal sd

If you want to see the phone through the PC, what you need to do is connect via USB.

1) Go to settings/network/USB and tap on the icon for transferring via USB. It would then ask you to connect the USB cable.
2) After connecting the USB, tap the icon on the phone screen
3) You should be able to view, transfer and play around with the phone USB storage like any thumbdrive.

Cheers

No go. I don't have a 'network' option following settings.

The closest I can come is settings/wireless and network/USB Utilities/ to USB Mass Storage...then nothing

No, you don't need an sd card in the phone to connect it.

First go to menu>settings>applications>development and make sure USB Debugging is NOT checked. Then go to menu>settings>wireless & networks>USB Utilities and (phone is not plugged into the PC at this point) select connect to PC as storage. Now plug it in. You should get the green robot that asks to to confirm the connection as mass storage.

Your phone's internal partition should show up on your PC as a removable drive.

If it's on Sprint, a CDMA network, then it's the Epic 4G Touch, isn't it?

...but it also says, "Galaxy SII" on the back and is billed/sold as that. It is isn't it????????

Don't get me started on Samsung's idiotic and confusing naming. It's a GS2, but with important hardware differences e.g. CDMA/4G radio rather than GSM/3G, four capacitive buttons vs two + one hardware key, and completely different firmware to other Galaxy S2 models.

None of which is relevant to your issue, fortunately. Any advice here will be safe to follow regardless of the model variant.

It should work. You just to make sure you connect the cable only after tapping the icon for connection to phone as storage. Else maybe its to do with PC, or the USB port on phone and PC.

When you connect to the phone without going through the USB in settings, does it connect and bring you to the MTP screen. If it doesn't it might mean its not connecting properly in the first place and something wrong with the port.

Sorry guys - No matter how many time I attempt this nothing happens! When I reach the final stage of your instructions I get a cpuple of beeps with the window "Connect USB cable to use mass storage, with an option to cancel....!!!!

I'm using the cable that came with the phone and have tried every USB port on the laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium. New laptop. I know the cable and ports are fine.

This is when you connect the USB cable to the phone and computer. After connecting, you need to tap the button again, and the screen will change with the android icon becoming a different color.

Did you try connecting the USB cable without going through the above, Do you get the MTP screen? Else it might be a problem with the phone USB port.

I don't think it's aproblem with the phone's USB port becayse it charges just fine via USB port. I'm at my witts end...

Right. That's what's supposed to happen. Then you plug in the usb cable and you should then jump to this screen...

If you don't see it, you should at least see the USB icon in the notification bar. Pull down the bar and tap on USB connected and the screen should pop up. Once you get to that screen enable storage and your phone will pop up as a removable drive.

Thanks Lun...

OK - I'm at work now, so I can't attempt this again right now....

So when I get the CANCEL window, do I click CANCEL, then plug in or plug in first then hit CANCEL?

You don't hit cancel. You plug in the USB cable and the next screen with the green USB robot should pop up. If you hit cancel, it won't work.
