Root Question on SD card partitioning methods

I'm looking at eventually installing A2SD+ onto my Desire, and I understand I'll have to partition the 16GB SD card first. SUroot's instructions suggest using GPARTED, which I've downloaded, but I also found this page that suggests loading Amon Ra recovery, and using it's options to partition the card properly for A2SD+ use ...

My custom recovery is 4EXT, which can apparently do the same thing.

So my question is - what are the risks and advantages of taking what looks like the easier route, and just partitioning in recovery, or why should I use GPARTED for this task despite the availability of partitioning in recovery?

(For those who haven't been following my other thread, my Desire is Froyo 2.2, S-OFF and I'm about to load a pre-rooted stock ROM with init.d so I can do this. The whole reason I'm going through all this trouble is to get more room for apps on my phone.)

hi
i want to partition my card as well. wot i need to no is do you have to use gparted ? on can you use any partitioning software. am not that clever at this stuff , got mini tool on my pc , is that ok ? sorry for questions

We generally recommend GParted as the most reliable way of doing the partitioning. It also does partition alignment properly, which can help performance.

I've never used mini tool, but if memory serves SUroot isn't a fan, and that would be good enough for me.

hi
well if that good enough for him then i will not use it . you guys no what your on about will read up on gparted again :o

uninstalled it , did not use .

will d/load gparted then read read read again....
you guys no what your on about :)

thanks

no doubt will ask more questions lol

gparted there are 3 methods to use it
1) CD
2) USB
3) VMware virtual machine.

I prefer the latter as you dont have to reboot your computer to use it, which if you need help, you can still use the internet. You can also take screenshots. I wronte a guide for VMware in my signature.

4ext can partition but like amonra and rmd it doesn't align. It has the option to align after but it uses the alignment scripts that can cause partition corruption.
Both 4ext and rmd are new and each have various issues being worked out so while they are very good we cannot recommend them as they are not stable enough.

As you can see I use ans like rmd but I still don't recommend it.

Gparted is the way forward. Do it the virtual way usig the guide and you'll never have a reason to not use it as its readily available to you

VMware is a doddle once you get the hang of it.

If I can do it trust me anyone can :D
