Help Question Thread for Smartphone and Droid Incredible Newbies

yeah, I actually think I remember them doing that for my current phone. I will call to ask before I head over!

good luck; its a pain to manually enter everything!
Once they do get it set up, make sure you use the backup function on the incredible, to save the info to verizons server..plus, I assume you have a gmail account, so sync your phone contacts to your gmail contacts..that way you will have them in 3 places..

I tried to search this but was unable to return any hits. Question while I was talking on phone the phone vibrated to let me know there was a message waiting, the person on the phone heard the vibrations and thought that I made a duck sound over the phone. Anyone else experience this and is there a fix? Thanks

gall. So I got my Incredible yesterday. Should this have come with like a detailed instruction booklet? Or just the quick hints guide? I seriously haven't even d/l a single app. I'm just trying to figure out how to send texts, and change ringtones, etc. Like basic phone stuff. My Voyager came with step by step directions for even the simplest things and I feel kind of lost since I don't have that with this very sophisticated phone.

(For example. I just sent my first text message. When I exit out of that application to the home screen and then click the "Messages" button to get back in, it opens back up to my sent message with a tap to compose area and the qwerty keyboard. But I already sent it! And it doesn't have like an inbox separating sent and received messages because everything is just listed together. SO CONFUSED!)

EDIT: I found the online guide. lol had no idea there would be no hard copies. Time to read up.

Hit the back button. The little left arrow second from the right side of the phone. That will back you out of your current "conversation" in the messaging app to the "inbox" view.

This might help a little to get started too: http://support.vzw.com/swf/droid_incredible_by_htc/simulator.html

I finally got my wifi to connect. The problem is every website I try to goto says web page not available. If I shut off wifi and retry it goes right through. Help?

Thanks! I'll take a look at that this evening. I just am having the hardest time getting used to the whole thing. Like the phone saves the last place you were (apparently) before you exit out. So when you get back into it, it just goes to where you 'left off' - I'll have to remember to hit back to get myself out of curent conversations etc.

Anyway, thanks again! soooooo much to learn! :)

it takes awhile to re-train your mind when you go to a smartphone like this..
In a week or so, everything will be second nature!

That's awesome. I love it already, just trying to get used to a whole new (and advanced interface).

One thing I can't seem get: I figured out how to get gmail and text notifications when my phone is sleeping (all black screen), both when I have my ringer set to vibrate and to sounds.

But I can't figure out how to get Yahoo mail to either vibrate or make a ring when the phone is asleep. I have to turn it on to see if there's a notification. I have the vibrate button in yahoo mail checked but haven't seen an option for ringer...either way it has never notified me. Is this common (like how you can't get yahoo while in wifi)?

Also, battery question. I haven't downloaded any apps yet from the app store. I did sync gmail, yahoo mail, and facebook (not via friend stream).

I think my gps is on all the time? I click the "maps" icon under "all programs" and it always shows my location (or close to it, it's oddly never quite accurate). I found under settings and Location I have checked "Use wireless networks" but "Location Setting" is 911 only and Use GPS Satellites" is unchecked.

Anyway, it says my Android system is using 42%, cell standby is 25%, phone idle is 17%, Display is 13%, and Live wallpapers is 3%. Should Android System be that high normally? What does Android system even mean? (it also says up time is 15:01 and awake time is 2:42...I have no idea how to tell batter percent but it's yellow).

Sorry for all of the questions.

No, your GPS isn't on under those circumstances, which is why your location is inaccurate. It's "guessing" based on what cell towers are currently seeing your phone.

Do this:

+ ---> widget ---> Power Control

This will give you a little bar that has buttons to turn on/off Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Active-Sync, and has a quick Brightness adjust.

Leave Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS off all the time except when you want to use them.

Your battery usage seems normal for a phone that is mostly idle. If you click on each item it will give you more detailed information about it. "Android System" is a bunch of small tasks that make up the basic OS of the phone itself. If you use Navigation (with GPS on) for a little while, you'll see Maps show up on that list and be sucking down more of your battery than anything else in all likelihood.

Sweet. It's just good to know what the "norm" should be, in case things start to seem off once I start putting apps. That way I have a base understanding of how my phone is running.

Speak of apps, is it safe to download apps without a microsd card? Do I need that first? Do I tell the app where I want it to be stored or does it find a place to download to automatically? Verizon didn't send us a card (coming tomorrow) and we wanted a bigger one anyway, but we were sure about downloading (or even taking pictures) before we got it.

Thanks! :)

i am pretty sure all your apps are automatically stored on your ROM.

so no, you don't have a choice where to store your apps unlike photos/video/music

Correct, the APPS will all be installed without you making any choices.

The SD card will be used to store data for those applications.

Right now, some apps may not work because they are not designed to "see" the 8GB of internal storage the Inc has (hopefully this will be addressed with future updates to the apps). Those apps need an SD card in the phone, otherwise they'll just tell you there is no place to store their data.

Is anybody else having a problem where apps randomly open up by themselves, I went to bed last night and only had lookout and my alarm clock running. When I woke up in the morning I had about 7-8 apps running(according to Adv Task Killer).

The apps are starting because they are configured to do something on a schedule or something else that is scheduled to do something needs them.

Stop using ATK. I mean no offense by this, but if you didn't know the answer to the question you just posted, then you are absolutely doing more harm than good to your phone by using ATK. It's not something that should be used by anyone who is not intimately familiar with the Android operating system and how it works. It is killing important tasks on your phone.

thanks for the help that was a good article, just uninstalled the ATK

Make sure you reboot your phone (full shutdown) once after you've removed it. That way you can be sure any system services it stopped get restarted properly.

Most people who have just installed it and let it run without manually doing some configuring on it actually get better performance and battery life after removal.

Hello android users im looking for some help in using the application called hide my life by cowry development...i downloaded the app and have been trying to hide my contacts but i am unable to do so...does anyone have this app who knows how to work and maybe help me de bug so i can get the app to working to its full capabilities?

I just got my 2gb microsd card from Verizon today. Popped it in and am ready to go. Then I realized that next week I plan on buying the 8 gig from Amazon. How will changing from my 2gb to the 8gb affect my apps/programs/photos etc. How do I transfer it to the new card?

just copy the files to the new card. you might want to get a 8gb card with a SD adapter card (assuming you have an SD slot on your pc--if not then you will need a usb adapter for the sd adapter) so that you can take the files off of the 2gb card, place them on your desktop. now connect your 8gb card and put the files on to it. plug into your phone and you are all set. just remember to turn off your phone while you do this.
