Questions about selling rooted Hero

JustSomeDude

Android Enthusiast
I am planning to sell my Hero on craigslist (great condition), and was hoping to get advice on how much to ask. I've seen it priced between $60 and $160. What do you think is a fair price for me to ask for, taking in to account that I was leaving it rooted? (people seem to want rooted phones)

Also, my Hero is currently running AOSP 2.2.1. My understanding is that it needs to be on a stock (-ish?) rom to be activated by someone else, is that right? If so, can I just flash something like Liquidsense 2.1, or should I restore my stock nandroid and then do a factory reset?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can get it completely back to stock if you flash the Android 2.1 with Sense RUU via HBOOT as outlined here: [RUU] Official 2.31.651.7 in ZIP Format, Flashable from Fastboot - xda-developers . That will, of course, cause root to be lost. However, it will be like it was factory out of the box for whoever buys it.

If you want to sell it rooted, then yes technically you could flash it to Liquid Sense 2.1 or restore your stock Nandroid and all would be well. I would just give them the option of whether they want rooted or factory fresh in your listing.

Thanks, I will definitely give them that option.

Do you have any advice on price?

What kind of shape is it in? If it is in pristine shape, I would say charge over $100.00 for it.

If it is sort of beat up, then go with about $80.00. The average I see for used Sprint HTC Hero handsets is usually around $90.00 on eBay.

I would Run the RUU and Wipe that sucker to get all your personal info off.
then re-root and flash a good Custom Rom....

Keep a copy of an H-boot RUU on my sd card JUST in Case!!!

Just want to point out that Sprint won't active a rooted phone. So you might want to RUU your phone before handling.

If he was on a Sense based ROM like Liquid Sense 2.1, it is very doubtful that a Sprint Store employee would notice that it was rooted. Additionally, Sprint cannot just detect if a smartphone is rooted when you try to activate it by calling them.

A ROM like Liquid Sense 2.1 or even NFX retains all of the neccesary software to activate with Sprint. You would be right if he threw a ROM like CyanogenMod 7 or AOSP Android 2.3 on there though.

Yes...I would Recommend that....if you are S-off

Does z4root work on the newest update????

Yes, it does as far as I know. A friend of mine rerooted using Z4Root after fully updating. :)

I still have my copy of the Z4Root .apk file in several places. I value it that much. ;)

One more question: On my current rom I have apps moved to the sd card -- if for some reason I want to restore that nandroid after I have already formatted an SD card (and moved the nandroid back to the sd), will I have problems?

Basically, can you restore a nandroid of a 2.2 rom with apps on the sd if the sd has been cleared/formatted?

Doing a Nandroid backup also backs up the apps that you have moved to your microSD card. So, yes, your apps on your microSD card would also be restored.

If any of us have helped you out, feel free to hit the "Thanks" button. There is no pressure on that though.

No problem at all. I am glad we were able to assist you.

I hope that you get a good price for your Sprint HTC Hero. Good luck.
