Questions about transferring from Evo 4G

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere...I did search :) I'm going to be upgrading to the EVO 3D from the 4G in a couple of weeks, and I'm just preparing my upgrade checklist. I'm currently on MikG 2.3 on my EVO (Android 2.3, obviously fully rooted). I know that the 3D is not currently rootable, so how do I restore data and apps from Titanium (which requires root)? I'm also using DarkTremor A2SD to run all my apps from my SD card (it's a 64GB card)...will this work on the 3D? Are there any other gotchas coming from the 4G due to the current lack of root access on the 3D? Thanks all...

You will probably need to wait for root before you can use any of the back up apps.

Personally I prefer to do the data transfer the manual way - manually install from the Evo 3D marketplace, and then transfer app data over manually. That way I ensure the cleanest install to minimize future issues.

There is an, essentially one click, temp root available that I used to fire up titanium backup and restore my data. See the all things root forum. or this xda thread. [FAQ/Summary] HTC EVO 3D DEV FAQ's, Root Status, etc. [ROOT3D! Updated: 07.10.2011] - xda-developers

Oops, my bad...I was thinking about my iPad which is 64GB...I have a 32GB card in my phone :) I would at least like to get my text messages over to the new phone...usually I use MyBackup Pro for that, but it needs root access as well. How would I do that manually?

Ah yes, I figured it was just a simple slip up like that. ;) The 64GB MicroSD's seemingly have not quite hit the US market yet or are super scarce still. I was going to make you reveal your dealer.

Its hard to transfer SMS without using a third party program. There are many programs out there, this one just fit right for me as it did not require a internet solution and it exports to the SD card in a universal file format. I think you can even back up settings and SMS to your Google account now when you first configure your Gmail account on a handset. I just hate the idea of putting SMS messages anywhere on the internet.

I use SMS Back Up and Restore by Ritesh Sahu. It is really low profile and simple which is a total plus and It exports a simple XML file to the Micro SD (XML is pretty universal and can easily be converted to be read by a PC if you wanted). It can also send them to your Gmail adress, but I hate that idea.

The only downside is the long wait time it requires to restore messages from the SD card to the new phone. I transferred 8,000+ SMS messages and it took quite a long time. I'd probably approximate about a half hour? I have a bad memory for that stuff - I set it to restore and came back to it later.

I also found that this program had few access permissions listed. This program is not likely to be doing anything other than what you instruct it to. But I can never be too safe, so I install it when I need it and uninstall it right away when I'm done and never run it with the internet active. (We really need an android emoticon that wears a tin-foil hat for people like me). The files stay on the SD card and when you re-install the program it locates the files in that default location. Simple yet elegant.

MyBackup Root is for root, MyBackup Pro is for non-root - maybe you have the Root edition?

Anyway - SMS Backup listed by PryoSporker should do the trick - +1 on that.

I have an EVO 4G and am going to get an EVO 3D, the question is, can I just take my SD card out of my 4G and put it in the 3D? Will this cause any problems? Should I erase the apps on it and just keep the media? Not sure how to go about this.

Yes, works fine, I had an issue with some ringtones and pictures getting shuffled around and misplacedbut that was easy to fix.

You can move the apps to the phone before doing the swap - or uninstall first then reinstall on swapped phone.

This isn't the stock 4G card, is it? That one is half the speed of the 3D one, fwiw.

Is there a way to transfer game progress (Plants Vs Zombies in particular) from EVO 4G to EVO 3D?
