Questions following rooting

led droid

Newbie
Hi,
I took a chance and performed the root procedure on my T989 yesterday.
I think everything is went well.
For a minute there i thought i bricked my phone. The phone would just show the android boot screen for a very long time, then it showed it was rebuilding something.

Then i changed the os from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4. After that i realized i didn't back up anything, contacts, settings, games scores etc..
When i turned the phone back on i noticed everything was intact!

Ok... here's the questions

1. Following the root i noticed i have both Superuser and SuperSU apps on my phone. Do i need both apps? Is one preferred over the other?

2. Should i do a backup using ether Kies, nandroid, clockwork mod recovery or use all 3?

3. Was i supposed to do a factory data reset, wipe dalvik cache etc after installing 4.0.4?

Sorry for the long winded post..

Hi led droid :wavey:

You don't need both Superuser and SuperSU. Neither will it hurt to have both. If I was going to keep one I think it would be Superuser.

You should definitely do a nandroid, meaning a backup in clockworkmod recovery. If you ever have a problem after installing a rom or deleting the wrong app, you can just restore the nandroid.

I would recommend using TWRP recovery instead. Download this and flash it in recovery just like you did the superuser file when rooting. It is much easier to use, faster and does a better job of wiping than clockworkmod. If you do install it, reboot, and then do a nandroid backup with TWRP. Since you're rooted now, I also recommend getting Titanium Backup from the play store and use it to backup your apps.

Normally, a factory reset is needed after an update to fix little problems. I think I would go ahead and do it before you do much more with your phone. Use Titanium Backup to backup your apps, use Kies to backup your contacts and media (or sync your contacts with Google and Google should restore them), use SMS Backup for any messages you want to backup. Don't restore any system apps with Titanium Backup. That will cause problems. Just backup and restore user apps.

I installed twrp recovery and made a backup on internal storage and external sd card.

After that i wanted to test the back ups, i booted into twrp and clicked restore. Following that the phone would just show the glowing "samsung" logo and that's it, I left it alone for an hour.... the same.
i tried the other backup i made.... the same.

I then installed clockwork mod and tried to restore using the backups i made just before i installed twrp.

The cwm backups didn't work, i got an error about MD5 mismatch.

My phone is bricked??
What to do next?

The phone would just stay at the glowing samsung screen.
I ended up using cwm to wipe/reset, then reinstalled 4.0.4, root phone.
I reinstalled titanium backup and im currently restoring the apps now(it very slow..looks like nothing is happening)

I'm not sure what happened. I've never had a problem restoring a backup with TWRP 2.2.2. How did you reinstall 4.0.4? Did you use this guide? Did you do a factory reset after?

Titanium can take a while depending on how many apps its restoring.

I'm using the phone with os 4.0.4. Only thing it's factory fresh.
My backup with Kies worked i got my contacts back.

Tried to use titanium backup to restore my apps, but it just showed 0% for an hour or so. Only 3 apps was restored in that hour's time.
I had clicked "Restore all apps with data" in titanium backup.

Did you do a factory reset after using Odin to put 4.0.4 back? That's usually a good thing to do.

I don't understand why Titanium is so slow. Did you try just restore apps, no data? Do you have any big save games or something?

Yea, i did a factory reset after odin. 4.0.4 is working good and the os was factory clean.
I'll restore just the apps or 1 app at a time using titanium. I'll give it a shot

I noticed in titanium backup that i could use the backup files i made from twrp recovery to restore my apps. I used that method for the apps.
The thought of replaying those angry birds levels again.

I wanna backup the phone, (before i try removing bloatware).
Is there any backup apps besides clockwork mod or twrp (kinda skittish using cwm or twrp)?

Also what's preferred, freezing or uninstalling an app?

I notice when i reboot my phone it hangs up on the "Goodbye" screen.
The phone will stay like that untill i pull the battery.

I don't think there is anything that will back up your system like recovery. I don't know why you had the problem restoring. When you make a backup, just make one on your sd card instead of sd card and internal storage. Maybe that will help. Then you can put a copy on your computer if you need it. It might also help after you did a fresh install of 4.0.4 using Odin and wiped out all the old stuff.

Its a good idea to freeze first to make sure it doesn't affect your phone. Then you can uninstall to free up more system memory if you want to. In the All Things Root Guide, check these links:

To get rid of the Goodbye freeze you need to flash Darkside Cache Wipe in recovery. I think its caused by CWM recovery. I don't have the problem with TWRP. You can try a more recent version of CWM if you want to. Download ROM Manager and choose the recovery for your phone. I just love TWRP. :D

I finally got around to installing TWRP recovery via Goomanager.
But when i boot into it the phone just shows the blue "Teamwin" screen.

Was i supposed to reinstall 4.0.4 after installing TWRP?

If you were going to install 4.0.4 you should do it before installing TWRP. If you use Odin to install 4.0.4 it will also install the stock recovery and wipe out TWRP or CWM. I don't know why you can't get past the TWRP screen. You can try getting ROM Manager from the play store and use it to flash a newer version of CWM.

I tried again to get twrp working, but no luck.
Maybe it does't like my phone... Lol
Got cwm installed.
Would be able to install different roms without using my computer(odin)?
By keeping the roms on the external sd card and using cwm recovery to install them?
Sorry for the questions, im kinda slow with this stuff.

Yes, you can keep a rom on your external sd card and would flash the zip file through recovery. Normally you only use Odin to flash tar.md5 files like the one you use to go back to stock.

I hate you can't get TWRP working. I just don't understand what the problem is. Do you know what versions you have tried?
