Root Quick goldcard question

Hi all

Forgive me for this no doubt obvious question.

I have just rooted my T-Mobile HTC Desire using Unrevoked which was a breeze.

I am itching to get a vanilla version of Gingerbread onto my Desire.

Do I need a Goldcard?
I have read this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-11th-november-2011-a.html

But I am still not sure if I need a Goldcard before I proceed.
Despite reading online I am struggling to realise the purpose of one.

I am new to all this but I am fast learner and kind of enjoy the challenge of doing this myself.

Thanks all

basically goldcards were important because you needed them to downgrade a rom and get out of a sticky situation or to flash a different RUU higher than your own if there was not an ruu available for your carrier.

this has kinda changed now as the highest version rom RUU available is 2.3.3 so you should be able to flash that and covered by warranty should you get stuck
not only that but if you s-off via revolutionary or alpharev then the new hboots are superCID so a goldcard is not needed.
