Root quick q

e a

Newbie
i want to customize my phone n lock screen to completely something different

how do i go about doing so? whats root? someone elaborate plz&thanks:confused:

Well if you just want to try customization you can do that with different launchers found on the market.

Gaining root access enables you to truely take control of your phone. It basically enables you to be the administrator account on the system, and to make any changes you see fit.

What this allows you to do is flash different ROMS (think computer operating systems) that allow you to upgrade your version of sense, version of android, and do numerous other things that you can't do without root permissions..

ok, thanks for your reply.

how would i go about rooting my phone?
if i were to root my phone would i increase the chances of ruining my phone?

We need some info first. We need to know what your hboot is. Power off (you may need to disable fastboot, settings> apps> uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power + vol down. This will take you to the bootloader screen. At the top it will say what version hboot you have. report what you see and then we can point you I the right direction.

Rooting is definitely the way to go. Rxpert said it best though when he asked what is it you want to do? I mean Customizing can mean so many things. If your looking to just do some basic stuff then like he said there are all kinds of Launchers out there. Widget Locker and Go Locker for the Lock Screen. If your wanting to do some serious themeing then Rooting the phone is only one aspect off what you need to do. Another is learning how to theme itself. For most starting out I suggest the UOT Kitchen

hboot 2.18.0001

i want to completely customize it to my liking and have it operate to my liking
i dont want launchers if thats something like windows blinds where it just covers up whats underneath/replaces a few icons with something new

Ok. The guide is for your H-boot version. That determines what method you need to root. As updates come out, HTC patches the old methods we used to gain root. The bootloader version changes along with these updates.

S-ON designates that the phones securities are ON. It used to be that you got S-OFF in order to root, but HTC has given us a way to unlock the bootloader so that you can flash new ROMS while still maintaining S-ON.

well unfortunately rooting now will wipe your data. so any texts, contacts and themes you have done to your phone will get wiped. so make sure that you back up accordingly.

EDIT: the man, the myth ninja posted me! :D

When you run the htcdev tool to unlock your bootloader it does wipe the phone. :(

It doesn't wipe your SD card tho. ;)

is the phone functional if i were to just root it without putting a rom

yes you will still have the stock rom when you unlock it. but during the process it will wipe data. if you want to use root required apps like the wireless tethering app among others you will need to flash the su file. the instructions are in the rooting guide linked earlier.
