Help Quick question about rooting and updating

I am sure that this is covered somewhere, but I cannot find anything. I just got a used Gnex running 4.0.4. I want to flash the latest JB AOKP. My question is:

Is it safe to root stock ICS and flash a JB rom on top of it, or do I need to update to stock Jellybean first and then root?

You can root on ICS and flash a JB rom. No prob at all.
