Quick question for root newbie (sort of)

Hey guys,
I am wondering if the version of the kernel I flash on my phone matters:
yesterday, I upgraded my phone to 2.3.5 BVKJ4 (got all the shitty apps I erased before back :().
I found a guide on how to flash, and then root 2.3.5 XXH3whatever.

Will it be a problem if I replace BVKJ4 with another baseband?

I can't find any tutorial on how to root 2.3.5BVKJ4

As I said I rooted my phone once before (struggled a bit actually), and am no expert in the matter... still learning...

Thanks for your help.
:)

I think your getting a little confused with terminology here.
baseband version (in settings, about phone) is your modem. this is what determines how your phone communicates to the outside world. you can swap and change modems to your heart's content without notice anything different cosmetically on your phone.

As you have now got extra apps, this means you have flashed KJ4 firmware. this is what you will see in settings>about phone>build number.
To root your phone, I suggest chainfire's method
once rooted you can, if you wish, install a custom rom. I would suggest going down this route as you seem not to like the bloatware etc. For example, CheckROM Revolution is very good indeed, and you have a choice of which extra bits you want to install from its kitchen application.

Yes, but only that the kernel matches the OS version e.g. 2.3.5. Even that's not always critical but it's safer. If a similar version kernel is available then it should be used, but otherwise the closest match will suffice.

If rooting you don't need to touch the baseband (modem).

There are instructions in Chainfire's CF-Root thread here.
Scroll down to post #7, download the KJ3 package at the bottom of the list, and follow the instructions.

Once done you'll still have the stock firmware and baseband but with root access. Simples! :)

Thanks guys,
Hawker> you are right, I am probably getting the terminology wrong... So many weird names kernel, baseband etc... But you got my point!
;)

Slug> Thanks for the help! I think that "baseband" is the wrong term. What I was calling baseband was the BVHKJ4 thingy. Which I guess is the build number...

So if I download another build number, it should be fine, but I should aim for something similar to BVHKJ4, right?

I was used to jailbreaking in my Iphone days, but rooting is still new to me...
;)

The KJ? offerings are the most recent, so I would go for one of those.
Generally speaking, whichever firmware you are currently on, use the corresponding cf-root file to root your device.
You can then install custom roms if you want (checkrom is KJ3, DlevROM is KI4) both of which are excellent.

Remember, if all you want to do is use Odin to download official firmware of your choice, you can download it from here and you do not need to be rooted to do so.

Thanks again!
:D
It makes a bit more sense to me now.
I will now check the last 3 caracters of my build version, so I will know what to download! I will also keep the links to Chainfire's forum for future releases.

SO you should really keep the original firmware on your PC in case you need to unroot?
And then you just flash it with Odin, and it is back to "factory" firmware?

As for the custom ROMs, I haven't ventured in this field just yet...
I am still using the Samsung ROM, just to feel at ease.
So those custom ROMs, what do they offer appart from a different user interface? Do they improve the phone performances? battery life?
(Sorry to be a dense nooB)

To get back to stock, you will need to restore your carrier's specific firmware. This can be downloaded from here

If you have rooted and want it to be 100% original, you will also need to reset your insecure firmware counter back to zero. To do this you will need to get a USB jig (just do a search on ebay)

Custom roms do not give you a different user interface necessarily. Most of them will give you stock look and feel with certain tweaks here and there which you can choose from. Most will have the bloatware removed giving you the choice to put back on what you want. CheckROM basically looks identical to stock. DlevROM has a different look to it, but in a nice way (not overly so) Others (eg Rarity and Criskelo go way over the top in my opinion, and I just cant get used to them

I recommend above anything else to install JKay's deluxe settings. this will give you loads of extremely handy features such as battery silencer on fully charge, a scrollable notification icon bar, customisable power menu, stop home button lag etc etc etc. You can also install compatible themes, most of which have stock look and feel with a few mods, others can alter the appearance drastically, so its totally up to you, but all these themes will also allow you to have a 6 slider lock screen with the ability to assign applications to the sliders (eg, open phone, messager, flashlight etc)

I've saved you the trouble above. There's no KJ4 CF-Root package, so use the KJ3 one I linked to and you'll be good to go.
I know, what i mean was "from now on"
:o
(sorry I am French, so lost in translation sometimes)

thanks a lot!

Wow, thanks for the thorough description!
:)
I was toying with the idea of installing cyanogen mod at some point...

I honestly never considered that English wasn't your first language. You write it much better than many people I know, so no need to apologise. I can only hope that my explanations were as understandable. :o

Well, I have been living in the UK for a long time, so that definitely help! ;) And yes I could understand you jut fine! ha ha ha
