Root Quick Root question.....

kosanders

Newbie
My buddy did a "quick root" of my Evo. The wireless tether works.

I've been reading on here to install a ROM.

DO I need to know which root method was used before I proceed?

Yes, because you might only have soft rooted and not have a recovery image. Power your phone off, then back on while holding volume down (this will take you to hboot). You should see something similar to this:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.97.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01

Does yours read "S-ON" or "S-OFF"?

Obtaining soft root will allow you to run root only apps and do much more, but you don't have nand access unlocked, which would allow you to create/restore backups, etc..

hi there, in short no, once the phone is rooted its rooted, doesnt matter which way it was rooted, so you wont need to know the rooting method.

Unless of course z4root was used and that only applies a temporary root from my understanding. It would still be good to know what method was used though.

Thanks that answers my question.

S is OFF

My buddy did create a nandroid when he did it.

I've installed the 2 versions of Titanium and BusyBox.

I've created my own nandroid, now I think I will try my first custom ROM!!

Any suggestions? I think I want to try the Series Elite.

There are dedicated threads for pretty much every ROM available in the forum, with experiences from other members, good and bad, that you can check out. I would also suggest you check this thread out, you'll find every available ROM and kernel out there. Let us know if you need anything.

Koni makes very good roms, imo. Also he's part of a group that makes the Kings roms, which are also very good. There's so many out there, it's hard to choose sometimes. :p

Follow the link from Frenchy, and check a few out. Also READ, and make a NANDROID befor you do anything. I'm sure you've seen this alot o times, it's repeated for a reason.;)

Happy flashing!
