radio SUCKS

I am in the basement, and RARELY can i send out a text or call. The galaxy s3 really is HORRID when it comes to signal reception on VZW. I am getting rid of this piece of garbage phone and getting a razr maxx because the hardware for the s3 is just pure JUNK. Anyone feel the same?

Do other phones on Verizon work fine in the same place?

Mine seems fine in the UK. You could try having yours replaced in case it's a dud.

Same situation here, even flashed the newer radio and still same in basement and other areas where my DX had no issues. Motorola truly has better radios than Sammy...

Motorola makes the best phones on the market (from a hardware standpoint)...been saying this for years...

everyone will respond with "ZOMG teh locked bootloaderrZZ!!" but its rubbish when youre oh so open phone can't actually perform like a phone because it doesn't have any reception..anyone who disagrees is simply in denial..

that being said...i love my Galaxy S3

I was with Tmobile UK on the Nexus One and my reception had never been better.

Now I'm on Vodafone UK on the S3 and I hate it. Part of my wants to blame it on the phone, and part of me on Vodafone.

I rarely get full bars outside or in fact anywhere and I have to be really central to get H+ or H. I rarely get any bars indoors (even though I live in London). Never the case with my Google Nexus One + Tmobile.

I have heard that the S3's reception is not as great as other phones.

Anyone in the UK with a different carrier to make some comparison?

It's Samsung, their radios are weak and have been for at least a couple of generations. They are the weakest among top Android Device makers (HTC, Samsung, Motorola) for sure, and maybe all of them. Samsung seems to have finally got the GPS right, now lets hope the other radios follow suit in the next generations.

But you can pretty much forget about having good reception with the S3, it's almost certainly a hardware issue. Mine is bearable, but I certainly want for more in that area.

I have to say i've yet to have a single problem with reception on my S3. It's always been full or near full in the areas i'm in.

The only time the signal ever dropped majorly, I was on the backend of a island where i wasn't expecting any in the first place.

probably not worth a damn to any of you but this also results in lesser radiation levels. my gs3 is great. the reception was great when i had the stock rom but now that i'm onto flashing cm nightlies, i sometimes drop service completely but that's a custom rom issue.

Its a Samsung thing, the radios they use are complete garbage. As for Moto, yes they make the absolute best hardware, and from a radio standpoint, I've never seen a stronger signal on a phone then my dads Razr maxx ...insane! With that being said, I'm just not a fan of they're designs, or UI.

Comparable to my tbolt and ive never had any of the problems that everyone bitched about with that phone. I am hoping a radio update will fully fix the small issues with the radio but all my calls have been great. An echo here or there but only on long distance calls and only briefly.

Love my S3, as well.

I had the Razr Maxx on VZW. I've also had the Droid X on VZW. I have the ATT version of the S3 and I have had zero reception problems. No better, no worse than either of the 2 Moto phones. Moto makes better radios=big fat myth....

what are you basing your conclusion on?

My personal experience is that Samsung gsm radios aren't the problem, it's their CDMA radios that are absolutely pathetic. Anyone who owned a fascinate, charge, or galaxy nexus can attest to that.

I've got sprint sgs3 and I have yet to loose signal or drop a call. I'm also in a non lte zone upgraded from a metro LG esteem and I get 2x better signal inside my apartment with my sgs3. I had t-mobile during the days of my razr flip phone and slvr bar style. They didn't get crap in this area but a head ache. I'd say give it sometime, wait for an update or check prl. Then go bitch to your provider if nothing happens and swap galaxies or get a moto. Me personally, I'd wait it out as I love this thing

This signal strength is the same as my former HTC Evo 4G. I'm on Sprint so things may a bit different.

But I agree with other people, I'd take the phone back to the store that I bought it from, complain, and demand a replacement. If the replacement is just as bad, and it's within 30 days of receiving the phone, you should return the phone and not get a replacement.

How were your other phones on Verizon? Or is this your first phone with Verizon? And are you relying on the actual signal bars shown on the phone? I never rely on those as those can be deceiving. I rely more on dropped calls, limited 3G connectivity, etc.

The fact I owned the X, Maxx and now the S3. I travel to the same area, 4 times a week. I have been doing this for 3 years, and have used all 3 phones. The S3 has been just as good as any of the Motorola phones.

based on what type of data?...and i hope youre not going to respond with "it has the same number of bars:

Had a Razr and it had no problems anywhere, full coverage even in a metal/ concrete cage. Now GS3 loses Internet connection when in the same cage. Still happy with it.

Based on the fact I can make calls and receive emails. Any other data required?

yeah i was hoping you had some actual data like comparing signal strength numbers and such like a lot of people have...

my DX and a friend that owns a RAZR always show a stronger signal than what my SGS3 is able to show...

i don't have any problems with calls/sms/mms/emails etc....but that doesnt change the fact that Moto's have a STRONGER signal sitting right next to me...

/ While I would love to see some empirical data based off of someone's signal strength readings, anecdotal evidence does point to the general idea that Samsung radio's are not the the best in some situations. My experience has been that Motorola has the best with HTC right up close to it and that seems to mirror almost any thread on the subject, with some folks always having different experiences.

Still, I love my SGS3 weather I'm running rooted stock or CM9/ 10. I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, but I just replace it with Nova Launcher and Lustre Icons and life is good for me. Comparing the appearance of the UI is like a philosophical debate - You can argue all you want which is better, but no one is truly "right" or "wrong". All you can do is decide what works/ looks best for you and move on from there

Too general to say either is better. After testing to an obsessive compulsive level, seems accurate that 3g is better on the RAZR and 4g is better on the GS3. Call and text range are the same on both.
