Ramblings from an iPhone convert....

Android/Evo Cons:

  • No surprise...battery life isn't that great.
  • Light leakage around the bottom frame. No biggie, but you'd think HTC/Sprint would of caught it during QC testing.
  • The battery cover is flimsy and doesn't fit flush.
  • So I finally tested 4G in the San Antonio area and the results are dismal. In most cases, 3G delivered faster results.
  • HD video recording is subpar...and that's putting it nicely.
  • I actually love iTunes and the simpllicity it offers. I've found that syncing media to the Evo (Android) is cumbersome.
  • Market apps suck. I could care less about bikini apps or fart sound generators and if I see another asian soft core porn app I'm going to vomit.
  • Lots of plastic.
  • Sprint Marketing, show people what the EVO and ANDROID platform can do. The general public could care less about pixels, megabytes, 4g, blah blah.

Android/Evo Advantages:
  • Good God, the screen is to die for.
  • Fast as hell! 1GHZ Snapdragon
  • 8 Megapixel Camera w/Autofocus and flash
  • Wifi Hotspot is simple and effective. Bring on the $30 hotspot and $10 premium fees! I pay over $60/month for a 5 gig capped Verizon MIFI! The Evo Hotspot will save me over $20 a month plus I have one less device and charger to carry on trips.
  • Out of the box turn by turn directions w/voice. iPhone...no.
  • Google Translation (This is a free app and holy crap...it rocks! Speak a phrase and it's translated via text AND speech!)
  • Speech to Text Integration (I can dictate notes, enter website addresses, perform searches, send texts and find videos on youtube by speaking.)
  • Flash Lite Support
  • Live Wallpapers
  • YouTube HQ is slick
  • Replaceable Battery
  • Facebook integration (The address book allows you to link your contacts to their Facebook profiles or Flickr accounts so that the information they share with friends on those profiles - maybe their birthday, home number or private e-mail address - gets wrapped into the contacts card.)
  • Widgets! (I love the bookmarks, calendar and friends feed widgets!)
  • That little thing called multi-tasking.
  • HDMI
  • Kickstand! Sounds like a cheesy feature, but it actually comes in handy!
  • Voice Search (Click the app, say what you're looking for).
  • Say what you will about the Sprint apps, but I love em! They provide news channels for me, Bravo for the wife and Nickelodeon to keep my kids entertained.
  • I love the having the ability to return an app to the Market store for a full refund!
  • Amazon MP3 store (EVO).

I love Apple products, hell I'm a self professed fanboy, but there is no denying the Evo. I was skeptical, but after using it for a few days I can honestly say this is one of the best phones that I've owned. I'm sure the new iPhone will be a slick device, but the Evo does what I want at a price point that puts a smile on my face.

Market apps suck. I mean....really...they suck. I could care less about bikini apps or fart sound generators and if I see another asian soft core porn app I'm going to vomit.
I have 90 apps on my phone and not one of them is a fart generator, bikini app, or soft core Asian porn app. Maybe you should try not looking for such apps but that should be expected coming from an Iphone user. Zing!

Yeah they do have some crap in the market... Really can't argue against that. But saying all the apps suck is simply false. The reason the crappy apps are there are because Android doesn't have the restrictions on apps the way Apple does. This is also the reason higher quality apps are being developed for the platform everyday. Developers love not having their hands tied. Every App that I have installed is Great Quality and extremely useful. And yes I have one Fart app... My nephew is 7 and it makes him crack up.... Ok you caught me.. It cracks me up too

Good point.

Hope so.

hah

What you don't like about the EVO is mostly a matter a preference or opinion.

What you do like about the EVO over the iPhone is mostly a matter of fact.

Hmmm, I wonder why?

Hi Blake, as someone who is also moving from an iPhone to EVO I really appreciate your comments. Question regarding syncing to the EVO: What method are you using? I already have doubletwist downloaded on my pc and the itunes library/playlists loaded up on it and it looks like it will be pretty easy and straightforward to get my media onto my EVO using it (I'm not getting my EVO until the 4th). Should I expect problems?

Thank you very much for posting this, I am just like you and love Apple products and love the iPhone, I just sold mine yesterday to pay for my Evo and based off what I'm reading and seeing, this phone is going to be perfect for me, well at least until the Evo 2 comes out ;).

Thanks again for the post and I'm glad you enjoy/love your Evo!

I'm an iPhone 3GS user who is going to be evaluating the EVO beginning next Friday. I really like my iPhone, but I'm willing to give the EVO a fair shake. It looks like a great phone. I do get tired of "fanboyism" on both sides of any cell phone discussion, though.

blake, it sounds to me like your criticism of the Martketplace may be a bit unjustified. I think the Market sucks in terms of finding new apps, but they ARE there, just have to hunt for them a bit. Besides games (which is another valid criticism), I don't have one app on my iPod tough that I can't find the same or similar for Android (yet).

Edit: Are you aware of AppBrain?

For those of us who don't know, what is AppBrain?

Some guy asked about AppBrain though - he just quoted the wrong one :)

AppBrain is pretty damn sweet. My "wanted" list is up to 27, and as soon as I get my Evo i'll be dropping them right in :)

I'm surprised they have the porn apps coming up in the "just added". All the porn stuff should be quarantined if Google is smart. First rule of porn is, users don't care if they have to do a few extra clicks to get to the porn. Just have it all in one category and sub the cat out to "just added". I'm in the biz and still feel this way.

I know your reading this Mr. Virginia...what do you think?

Android/Evo Cons:.
  • The battery cover is flimsy and doesn't fit flush.
  • Lots of plastic. Other than the screen, the phone doesn't scream quality.

My battery cover fits fine, and the Evo feels like the highest quality phone htc has made. It's heavy and the glass is surrounded with a metal frame. The only part thats plastic is the back and it has soft touch paint that doesn't feel cheap at all. If you want to know what cheap feels like, try an Incredible.
