Ramblings from an iPhone convert....

I thought the review was good and concise. Unfortunately, I can't compare it with my own critiques since I don't have the phone yet.

I think defending a product's faults, even when they are clearly there makes one a fanboy, and there are quite a few on this site. Its hard to bash iphone fanboy's, and then turn around and defend anything evo and android.;)

Great thread. I'm coming over from iPhone too and I'm sure I'll find many of your points dead on. Can the 4th get here already :(

I feel you man.

I was using a Hero yesterday and although there's a lot to like about the Android OS....there's a lot that is still lacking when compared to my 3GS but I've been an iPhone user since day one and ready for the change and don't think I'm gonna regret it one bit.

I'm sure the user experience on the EVO will be far superior to that of the Hero.

There is definitely a learning curve with Android. HTC's Sense UI has lessened it a lot, though. But I think there's a bigger upside in the end.

So I finally tested 4G in the San Antonio area and the results are dismal. In most cases, 3G delivered faster results.
Could you please go to a downtown location and do a speedtest.net test. Your results in san antonio should be around 7-8 Mbps down and about 1-2 mbps up. Please do a test and post your results, you may have a faulty radio. Your results are not typical.

Agreed. I evaluated the Incredible for a couple of days, but I was pretty unfair to it. With the EVO, I'm going to put my 3GS away for two or three days and make myself get acclimated to the EVO. With the HTC Incredible, I found that the Android 2.1 was difficult to adjust to, especially after being an iPhone users for the past three years. I also missed some of the little things I like on the iPhone, such as native screenshots and tapping the status bar in the browser to scroll instantly to the top.

However, I definitely plan to give the EVO a much fairer shake this time around. And that screen - O...M...G!

how is dragging and dropping Mp3's to the SD card "Cumbersome"?

Try putting a tv show or movie on the Evo. It can be done, but it's not a simple as clicking a button.

My battery cover fits fine, and the Evo feels like the highest quality phone htc has made. It's heavy and the glass is surrounded with a metal frame. The only part thats plastic is the back and it has soft touch paint that doesn't feel cheap at all. If you want to know what cheap feels like, try an Incredible.

The frame is black plastic, not metal. I'm not saying the phone feels cheap, just part of my battery cover isn't flush. Actually I used an Incredible for a week and thought it was well built.

I tested 4G near 1604 & 35 and 410 & 35. Wow 7-8 Mbps down? I haven't seen anyone achieve those speeds…yet. Personally I could care less as I don't have 4G coverage in my neck of the woods. I just happened to visit SA yesterday. The wife and I will be staying at the Riverwalk tomorrow night so I'll do some testing downtown.

They are capping the upload at 1mbps. SO no way you can get higher.

Wimax is strong where I live and I actually prefer to avoid iTunes and the whole syncing model of doing things. Build quality is the only real issue I can see myself getting annoyed over and so far it seems like most reviews call it high quality while a few mention the battery cover. It is kinda lame that they use those thin covers but I assume it's for design and engineering reasons. I almost never take off my battery cover and I plan on probably just leaving the 8GB card in for the foreseeable future so I should be alright. App selection never seemed poor to me. Only thing I don't see much of on AppBrain are 3D games which I never feel like paying for anyway. I think that unless you are really locked into the iTunes ecosystem and can't get out due to DRMed songs or whatever, there is not a whole lot going against this phone. Prices are lower than on iPhones and you have the added benefit of a Wimax radio for the times you find yourself in range of a Wimax network. Good times.

When I tested the Incredible, the back cover was flimsy and thin when it was removed, but it felt nice and solid when actually installed. I think people are getting really OCD about this whole back cover thing. Just keep it attached to the back of the phone! :D

I'm using Sprint/Clearwire Wimax at home right now and typically see results around this range:

I've seen a few higher and a few lower but that's about typical. I'm sure I could try to find a faster destination to ping but unless there are real issues with the radio in the Evo, this is what you should expect in a city with good coverage. As you move out of the center of the city and toward the suburbs, it gets a little more hit-or-miss.

Anybody else surprised at the number of iPhone converts? To be honest, based on my use of an iPod Touch and very brief use of most models of iPhone, I can't really imagine what people are trying to acheive by switching? The only things I can think of are abysmal coverage with AT&T, larger screen (but the iPhone already has a nice screen), faster processor (iPhone seems reasonably fast to me, and I'm an IT Guy!)? Also, the new iPhone is supposed to be around the corner, why switch now? Not that I can blame them, I'm just curious.

To be fair, The number of iPhone converts is probably a miniscule drop in the bucket when you think about the tens of millions of iPhone users. Think about the many Verizon customers who are waiting for the iPhone to come to their carrier. There's enough cell phone goodness to go around.

I dunno. I've gone from PalmOS, to Windows Mobile (for two phones), to WebOS, and will be going to Android in less than a week. Some people like to try different OSes and phones and there are lots of options these days depending on what you value. I can personally think of why *I* never got an iPhone--mainly higher cost of service, iTunes lockdown, and the nagging lack of a few key features that only slowly trickled out over the course of three models. Obviously if you have a good ATT plan or don't mind paying more, enjoy the simplicity of iTunes, and don't use the features either not supported or outright blocked by Apple, then it's a fine phone. It's got its own set of pros that may counter my list of cons for someone else depending on what they prioritize in a phone.

I'm giving android a shot for 2 reasons: 4G (looks disappointing) and the android notification system (the iphone's is abysmal).

It seems like many people point to the 3d games available on the iPhone as a mojor point. The android community will be getting almost every major companies 3d games in the near future. Why? Well now that the lower of the hardware android phones are being phased out and the total android market share is groing every month it will make it easy to convince companies to port their 3d games over. Look at gameloft. They have already done it. I personally dont really get into games on small screens. I play my xbox360 on my 60inch LCD once in a while. But every phone game a have found gets boring for me after a very short period of time.

What android marker does have that iphones will never get is apps that really change and personalize your device. This was a contributing factor to me switching from iPhone to Hero last year. I dont think i could go back to apple. I had a jailbroken device that had to remain jailbroken to be useful. I didnt want Pandora to stop so i could reply to my Text message. And apple is always fighting the jailbrake community. It was always cat and mouse with them. I grew bored of the lack of customization and simplicity of the IPhoneOS. Now i will say that it is easy to pick up and use. Thats why so many girls and moms, grandmoms and aunts have iPhones. So far android has been more of a geek phone. And i guess when it comes to my phone i am a geek.

Overall i am not a fanboy of any product. Nor am i loyal to any OS. However, it does feel good to not feed apple's greed any longer. I lost so much respect recently for Steve Jobs when he wrote the open letter to Adobe with his lies about Flash not being able to run on a mobile device. I dont like feeling like i am being played as a fool. I would rather Jobs just say its a business decision to block flash since our app store sales may suffer if consumers dont have to pay us for games and video apps. But to come up with many bogus reasons to block flash made Jobs and Apple seem like the bad guys. I dont like giving money to the bad guys. At least google will admit their business model. They are not talking down to their users and trying to eliminate competition with bogus patent lawsuits.

When I compare the App Market from Android/Iphone...I would say both have very good apps but the iphone smokes us in the "fun" department.

Faceswap on iphone, aging booth, mmorpgs, shotting other people online in whatever that cowboy game is....I just don't see anything liek that in the Android market.

There are a lot more just can't think of them right off, hopefully android will catch up and start putting out some better apps as well.

I agree I just looked at both app markets and the Apple market has better apps. I do not think that will be the case for to long though

I plan to to test drive the EVO and new iPhone at the same time.

However I doubt the new iPhone will have

4.3" Screen

Mobile Hotspot

4G Speed

Adobe Flash

LED Message Light

I do like the Apple tight and polished OS

But it looks like the EVO will make me jump ship
