Random shutdown doesn't happen with TouchWiz

Got my captivate from Rogers 4 days ago and since then, it's been shutting off randomly.....sooooooo annoying...and to make it worst... I can't get a replacement until they have 'em in stock  ...Using the phone with Beautiful Widgets and TouchWiz Pro which I personally like.

Love the phone though....
I thought Rogers would at least fix all the At&t's Captivate problems....

Make sure that the date of your request for a replacement is noted on your account. Your 30-day trial should not be affected by the fact that they don't have inventory.

Right.

my phone shuts off everyday after i take it off of the charger and it says fully charged. it is very annoying and definitely has to do with the full battery. i installed captivate keep alive, i'll see how that works

Have had my Captivate since early September.

Only one random shutdown in all that time. I had Battery Booster installed, but can't say with certainty that was the cause.

However, I uninstalled that and have not had any random shutdowns since.

I also have had Launcher Pro Plus installed for about 2 weeks. No random shutdowns from that either.

I test all apps I install on my phone religiously. I'll install many from the market, but ALWAYS open each one and make that app perform the actions I downloaded it for. If nothing goes wrong, then I test the next app.

It is a PITA, but I have caught a few apps that just made my phone go crazy with FCs and which I could only fix with battery pulls. Needless to say, I uninstalled those right away!

Test apps and read comments before downloading. I stay away from apps that have at least 2 people complaining of FCs on my particular device. And I try to be a good doobie and write strong reviews and rate the apps that I keep installed on my phone, to help others.

EDIT: Plus I supercharge my phone all the time, meaning, I let it keep charging even though the battery full notification is on my screen. I always click ok before disconnecting the cable. Not sure if that helps, but I've done that since day one.

Found my issue, it was happening when my phone was jumping between the 850 mhz band and the 1900 mhz band. It would freeze and only happen in areas of bad signal. Locked it on to the 850 mhz band and havent had a freeze since.

100 hours of uptime and counting, I am using launcher pro.

Freezes aren't random shutdowns.

Have your issues been freezes, shutdowns, or both? Your clarification will assist in an effort to keep this thread "pure."

They were freezes, often they would happen when the phone was sleeping so it would look like the phone just randomly shutdown because it wouldn't wake up. I always had to hold the power button or pull the battery to restart.

Feel free to modify or remove my previous posts but I think it's important to note my latest post because the problem causing my random freezes could very well give people invalid points of data with respect to the random shutdowns.

I have updated all of my posts to reflect this.

To add my 2 cents to the OP, I have been using Launcher Pro for about 130 hours of uptime now with no random shutdowns.

Thank you for the clarification. It helped me to understand your device's environment and I'm confident others will benefit from your posts.

I have an Epic on Sprint, but I have the same problem reported here. With only TouchWiz, no issues. With Launcher Pro installed my phone shuts itself off, sometimes once a day and sometimes more, with no warning. It doesn't always happen when I am actively using the phone either. It can be sitting on my desk for an hour, then I go to check my messages and lo and behold, the phone is off.

I have removed and added LP (the premium version) a number of times over the course of the past couple months, always with the same result.

I am going to run one more test later today, which involves a clean/fresh install of LP+ without restoring my backup, in the event the backup file contains some bad data that randomly causes the shut downs. I know it is a longshot, but it's about the only thing I haven't tried.

Also, like others, I am not claiming LP itself is flawed. It may just be that it is interacting with something else that is running on the phone. But removing LP+ solves the shutdown issue 100% of the time for me.

same problem here
shutting down non stop, several times a day. Didnt happend first 2 weeks, maybe once. Capalive helps, but KILLS battery, this is VERY ANNOYING. MY LAST SAMSUNG PRODUCT EVER !!!

Review post #348 in this thread:

Be careful if you choose to attempt this procedure. Don't let the alcohol get near the white moisture detectors!!!

If you haven't already done so, you may wish to review the new thread "Additional Insight into Random Shutdowns" in the general section.

I am not adding any more insight into this issue. But thought of sharing the current status since I started this thread.

I have not installed Captivate Keep Alive app. As most of you might be doing, I too charge the phone overnight (all night) and my battery would be down to 40-50% by end of the following day with my normal usage. Since I did not have this app to help me with random shutdowns, I decided to just remove LauncherPro (free edition) that I was using. I did so on Oct 15th and observed for 10 days to see if the random shutdown happens before starting this thread. When it did not happen for 10 days, I posted what I had observed.

Now today is Nov 19, still no Captivate Keep Alive and I have not had a single random shutdown since Oct 15 ever since I removed LauncherPro. That is 35 days straight without any random shutdowns.

As I have stated earlier and many others have done so too, I am not just blaming it on LauncherPro. I am just sharing my observations.

Started getting used to TouchWiz and I do not miss LauncherPro that much any more. Though I am settling for less than I want to, for now I am preferring stable phone operation Vs aesthetics. However, looking forward to the full re-write of the LauncherPro which may not have this issue for me and I can enjoy all other benefits it brings.

I have been reading this forum for quite some time. Just now registered so I could share my experience with the shutdown issue. Like you I was definitely able to trace the sutdown to LauncherPro Plus. But I also found another way to induce it. My testing took a couple of months and since that time I have not had a single shutdown in over a month. I'm sure, depending on the phone, there are other things that also triggers this. Below is a copy and paste of part of a post I had made at another forum.

The first problem I tackled was the SMS issue. With some contacts I could not reply to messages because their displayed phone number did not contain the area code even though it was listed in my phone's contact page for them. I also could not initiate a text message from their contact profile as the area code would be dropped when typing the message. The only way I found to send or reply to a message was to start a new message and enter the beginning of their phone number or name then the phone number would be displayed correctly including the area code.

I tried all the suggestions I found here and other places. Such as deleting all cache and log files as well as deleting the individual contacts and recreating them. Nothing I did solved this issue. What was really weird is some of my contacts did not have the area code in their phone number yet it would be added when messaging.

Finally I sync'd my contacts with gmail. I then logged in and made sure all phone numbers had the correct ten digits. Then I performed a factory reset on the phone and resync'd my contacts with gmail. All messaging issues were resolved.

Doing a factory reset gave me the ambition of trying to solve the phone shutting off after being charged. This was a problem as long as the charge was at least 78% to 80%.

After fixing the SMS issue I left the phone completely stock for more then a week. Not once did I experience any shutdowns. I then installed LauncherPro Plus. Immediately the shutoff issue returned. After several days I performed a factory reset and left it at stock and experienced no issues for another week. Reinstalled LauncherPro Plus and the issues returned.

I performed another factory reset and installed ADWLauncher. After two weeks of use not a single shutdown. Thinking this was fixed I started installing apps. Although not as severe the shutdowns returned. Uninstalling all the apps resulted in the phone no longer shutting down. So I started installing apps one at a time and testing for a few days in-between the installs. Some apps would cause the phone to shut down while others were fine. There really was no pattern to which apps worked compared to the ones that didn't. Both Handcent and ChompSMS caused shutdowns.

After a couple of weeks of using the phone with installed apps that caused no shutdowns I installed Spirit Level Plus. Once again the phone randomly shut down when charged above 80%. This made no sense as this app should have minimum interaction with the operating system. Then, for whatever reason, I had an idea. I uninstalled Spirit Level and reinstalled it using TWLauncher and once installed switched back to ADWLauncher. The phone never shut down after this.

Thinking I might be on to something I installed both Handcent and ChompSMS using the same method. What a pleasant surprise it was when after a week there was not one shutdown. So I installed a few more apps and still did not see any issues. This was maybe a month ago and since that time I have probably installed 40 - 50 apps using the same method and have not seen one shutdown.

Praz-1,

Thanks for the insight. Food for thought.

What phone do you have?

Do you install only from the Market or do you sideload? Are you rooted?

I've had the Captivate since mid-September, supercharge it (keep it on charger even after the battery full msg) all the time, unrooted, with LauncherPro Plus installed.

My only random shutdown was when I had Battery Booster installed. Have not had one since I uninstalled it.

I reboot my phone almost every day for a variety of reasons. So I wonder if my manual reboots prevent the random reboots. LOL

I had installed probably about 80 apps before I installed LauncherPro Plus and the rest (about another 100) after LPP.

I actually do have Spirt Level Installed, but that was one of the apps I installed with TW instead of LPP.

I've always run each new app individually as I install them (like I'd install 5 at a time, but test them one at a time after install them)...and had found a few bad apps that made my phone go crazy, including having to do battery pulls before I could even get the phone working again. Needless to say, I uninstalled them as soon as the phone rebooted. It's just too bad that I was so freaked out by the app, that I didn't take note to post in the Market. (I need to do a better job of that!)

Anyway, I think the only thing we have in common really is the testing of apps as soon as we install them before using the next app.

Perhaps that would prevent some of the random shutdowns for a few more folks.

Sorry, should have listed that. Captivate, not rooted and apps are only installed from the market. There are a couple of apps I really need that require sideloading but I'll be giving this some time to make sure the shutdowns don't return.
