Random shutdown doesn't happen with TouchWiz

I'm having the same issue and I am using Launcher Pro. Happens when I start an app that uses 3G and only at my office (I think because of low signal but I don't know).

I used to use ADW Launcher and I found it caused the random restarts because I didn't experience it in TouchWiz. But now that I've switched to Launcher Pro I experience them again. Maybe TouchWiz simply doesn't play nice with other Launcher applications? Has anyone tried to root the phone and remove TouchWiz?

I really dislike TouchWiz and I will fight to stay as far away from it as possible, I just prefer Launcher Pro much more for some reason.

UPDATE: I was having random freezes and not random shutdowns. Launcher Pro works fine for me. I solved my random freezes by locking the frequency of my phone to 850 mhz, I have a link to how to do this in one of my later posts.

First, welcome!

>>> Has anyone tried to root the phone and remove TouchWiz?

Ingrained in the firmware. Futzing with it is not advised.

Are you sure, that seems like it's something that would be purely software based. If not that seems just wrong?

UPDATE: I figured I'd back up my point abit better :). Since you can install a custom rom on android without TouchWiz I think that it means that TouchWiz isn't that low level.

No, it proves it is low-level: it's part of the firmware.

Apps can be "stock" and part of the firmware, or they can be third-party and installed into user storage. The entire sock firmware is a symbiotic whole... when you start ripping things out, other things can break in unexpected ways since you don't always know all the ways they were designed to work together and share code. Plus there was never any expectation that parts might not be present... that's why it's firmware.

Low-level doesn't have to mean the kernel or system files.

Ahh I thought that you meant it was the firmware not integrated so much into it that you're unable to install it :). My bad, I fail at reading.

But has anyone tried running a custom ROM and seeing if Launcher Pro works on the phone?

I do plan on rooting my phone and installing a custom ROM if I find out I can make Launcher Pro stable that way :). I don't know why I dislike TouchWiz so, mainly cause I like starting on the middle screen :P. That might be an option though.

I just recently received my Captivate on Monday, and since I've gotten it I've had it randomly shut off on me about 10 times already. I really like the phone A LOT, but these random shut downs are EXTREMELY ANNOYING.

I had launcher pro installed, and when I saw this thread the other day I decided to un-install it as I can live without it, however the phone is still shutting off. Then I read somewhere that its possible that the phone could be turning off due to having a full battery. However yesterday my phone was constantly shutting off, and I still had about 50-60% battery life still left. So, I'm ruling out that whole "charge" theory.

Are most people experiencing this random shut down's of their phones? Or is this unit defective and I should exchange it immediately?

First, welcome!

Most people are not experiencing random shutdowns, otherwise the noise level would be much higher.

Monday, eh?

Exchange it. Now. If you've purchased it at an AT&T corporate store and there's another one in your area, go to the other. Theory - a chance that their batch is "more better."

>>> I don't know why I dislike TouchWiz so, mainly cause I like starting on the middle screen :P.

And there I was thinking it might be something frivilous. Shame on me. ;)

Not to throw a wrench in stuff but I've been running with about as much untested beta software as possible (2.2 cognition and LauncherPro) and I've never seen the random shutdown issue. I've also never had a problem with battery life.

I curious though, do people that have the random shutdowns also generally have battery life issues? Maybe they are the same problem?

re: wrench: Most phones do not have random shutdown problems.

re: battery: Not noted. The only battery-related connection is that some users have reported that their charge levels are typically high when the shutdowns have occurred.

I was on the phone today to get a RMA# in order to return my captivate, and wouldn't you know it, the phone actually shut off in the middle of a call! I was hitting the automated prompts and when I moved the phone away from my face the screen didn't turn on. I was thinking the proximity sensor was messing up. I started hitting the home/back keys and still nothing. I decided to hit the power switch as I thought the phone might have just been locked or something. Wrong, it was completely off! Hopefully my next captivate will be better as I really like the phone.

Haha, it's definately frivilous no doubt about that but what can I say... I bought an android phone because I love rediculously customizing my phone. If I didn't I'd have bought an iPhone because of the pretty resolution.

I did however just get a random shutdown after doing a FactoryDataReset and running one application... Meebo IM. I don't think Meebo is to blame, I think anything that uses 3G causes my phone to die when I have a low signal since this only ever happens at my office. This explains why my phone crashed alot quicker before factory data resetting it, because it had more apps using 3G. At least thats my theory :).

I for one am going to take Jack45's advice and get a new phone from a different Bell Store. Wish me luck on phone #3.

As annoying as this problem is I'm sadistically enjoying clearing out my local bell's shelves of Vibrants. Its the only little act of revege I can get against this stupid company that locked me in on a 3 year contract just so I could get a phone that doesn't work right. I will now start tracking how many Vibrants I have gone through in my signature.

Moral of the story: Keep on exchanging until you get one that works

My shutdowns happen irrespective of my battery level.

It's important to me, and I suspect to other individuals who take on family and other relationship responsibilities, that the device stay on and operational. If we're to be counted on during emergencies or otherwise important situations, we should assure that the telephonic lifeline remains viable. This is not an "I hope it stays on" light-hearted situation. It's so much more than that and, to that end, we need to do whatever is necessary to assure that random shutdowns do not occur. Settling is not an option.

I Dont think Launcherpro has anything to do with it.

Since I got my 3rd Captivate, I have been using LP ever since I took it out of the box. I went about 3 weeks with it that way, no shut downs. I Started using the Cognition 2.2 Betas at about beta 2. Still using LP as the launcher, now on Beta9.1 still with LP, never a single shutdown.

I think the problem lies somewhere else.. there is a bunch of theories, but at least from my experience, LP is NOT the culprit.

...at least from my experience...

A critical component of your post.

I've written that some devices are more susceptible to shutdowns than others and that the causes vary, e.g., high charge levels and, for some, LauncherPro. LP tipped my device into coma mode. Your mileage varied. And that's good.

Sounds pretty bad. I'd exchange it.

If we want to try using captivate keep alive, how low should we set the % within the app. I'm very confused by the wording. Can I just set the CKA app to 1% and be good? I always keep very nicely charged phone via wall at night and usb connected during work hours, so my phone has a tough time dropping below 40-50%. I actually work for AT&T and I don't have alternatives to this phone really, it's the best android att phone. I like THIS phone. Why must it be plagued?

You can set it at 1%, but your battery life will suffer. Based on reports from the field, this flavor of shutdowns occurs at high battery charge levels, so I would start the CKA slider at 80%.

Do you have a shutdown problem and, if so, have you noticed that it happens only when your battery is near a full charge?

Yep. As annoying as all other possible issues with the phone may be, the "phone" part of it just has to work or it's just worthless to me. I don't want to be unavailable in an emergency because I wanted a cool phone to play with.

Happy to report that after 5 days of using Captivate Keep Alive and LauncherPro (Paid version) I have not experienced a single shut down. I have it set to 90%. :-)

I think I found the issue I was having. It turns out that the msn program I was using auto-reconnected. I got a msn client where this is an option and I havent experienced a shutdown since. While I think that there are real hardware issues with these phones, installing MSN Talk instead of Meebo and turn off auto reconnect is something to try.

The phone shouldn't crash when autoreconnecting but I can deal...
