I have a lot of contacts on FB who constantly post selfies... Do or Don't? I personally hate them.
Special occasions only. Standing in front of some nice scenery on vacation is ok, I don't need to see you waiting for a McMuffin in the drive-through.

I think I'm going to be sick.

How a selfie obsession could ruin your relationship, according to a psychologist

“Selfie” is not just word of the year, but also the mainstay of postings on social media sites such as Instagram. With the prevalence of camera-equipped smartphones the posting of selfies has reached epidemic levels – even the funerals of national leaders aren’t exempt. But is there a psychological fall-out?

A new study by Florida State University academics Jessica Ridgway and Russell Clayton found that people who were more satisfied with their body image posted more selfies to Instagram – confidently showing off, you might say. But in turn, they reported experiencing more conflict with their romantic partner – such as jealous arguments about attention others had paid their photos online – and poorer relationship quality. So does this mean that Instagram selfies are bad for relationships?

The study’s authors speculate that when one partner frequently posts attractive selfies, the other partner may feel jealous or threatened. This may lead to excessive monitoring of the other’s Instagram feed, which means they see even more of the attention the photos receive from followers, potentially winding them up still further. This could potentially lead to greater conflict, cheating, or a break-up.
...personally, I see them as the pinnacle of narcissism. The name itself tells it all.

Exactly!

I absolutely Hate the term myself. I must admit that I have taken a few shots of myself (Halloween, wearing sports jerseys) to make a point or be a bit silly, but it is on very rare occasions. And even then, I hate the term Selfie, because, as you said, it is a very narcissistic term. Personally, if I have to use a term, I call it Self Shots or Self Pictures or Self Images...not Selfies.

It is narcissistic, I feel. But I would rather take a photo of something, or someone else, and not have my ugly mug in the shot!
I don't really get this obsession with wanting to be in the photo yourself.

Why in the heck are people so obsessed with being in the photo, when taking a picture of something historical.

I never even understood that back in the days of film cameras.

My two youngest kids are into selfies and post them regularly to their social ties. My oldest are not.
I see it as just another means of self expression. I don't mind seeing my contact photos changing. It sort of spices up the soup. I'm with @PattiCakeUS , the selfie thread is fun. It's interesting to put a face with the people we communicate with.

by the way, I didn't mean any disrespect to people posting pictures of themselves in the other thread, indeed that is fun to see what you all look like.
I'm just referring to the general 'selfie' obsession that people have with putting themselves in any photo they take.

My daughter's one of the selfie crowd (as previously pointed out), but she also has this compulsion to take pictures of her food whenever she eats out, and sunsets.

OMFG, I have places to be, things to do, and I'm standing around waiting for her to get into the car while she takes a fifteenth snap of the same freaking pink clouds...

It's not like she's making a calendar or coffee table book with all these pictures of sunsets...

I like clouds so will occasionally take and post those. They're cool. The kid only takes selfies when the situation warrants, like with some of the animals he encounters through work. What could be more fun than you and vulture? I rarely take one and I hate video chats. No one wants to look at this mug ;)

And, changing the subject, I'm rather pleased with myself right now. Busted out the screwdriver, got over my initial fear and adjusted the pickups on my new to me since November guitar. The neck was too high/loud so I lowered it a lot. Because twang on a Telecaster. :D
