Random Thought Thread

My random thought - Why are the planes flying SO LOW today??? I live near D.C., Dulles airport is a couple miles away and I swear they are making my hair fly each time they go by, which is like every 15 minutes, lol. But seriously, hum.....?

So...does technology actually make better drivers? I'm going to argue no. All it does is mask their shortcomings.

Case in point: a lady who lives across from me has a new Honda Civic. We have pretty large covered parking places, so she backs out until she is just inches from the car behind her before stopping. I know she's relying on the backup camera to get her that close, because she really has no spatial sense about her car. How can I tell? Well, she puts it in drive and pulls forward, then stops and reverses the wheel and backs up...never coming closer than five feet (in the front) to the posts and pillars of the parking structure. Literally it's like five or six attempts at this jockeying-around before she is finally comfortable simply going forward and leaving the parking area.

Absent the backup camera I don't think she'd ever be able to leave her parking place.

And that would actually make the roads a little safer, I think. :D :D

I think having too much technology in a car makes you less aware. You get used to the back up camera so you no longer look behind you instinctively. I personally find having more technology to be a distraction while driving. While my car isn't old by any means yet (it's a 2013), it didn't come with much by way of technological amenities. I'm happy with this. It connects to my Note 3 automatically and start playing my music. I can change the song and volume by buttons on my steering wheel so I don't even have to look at the radio (which isn't touch screen, so really easy settings).

None of my gauges are digital. My car doesn't even have a tachometer. Since I'm a pretty fanatical car girl who can drive a stick, I can pretty much feel when the car is shifting automatically and I can guess roughly where the RPM is.

Not everyone prefers such simplicity but I appreciate it. Focusing on what's outside around me is more important than what's on the inside. Just my opinion.

Amen!

I've had a car we with a huge backup camera for 3 years and I find that I have a really hard time using the mirrors in other cars now. I had a car with a much smaller camera before so I still used my mirrors. I'm not happy with this development. I LOVE the big camera as parking is so tight around here but I do NOT like feeling like I'm losing the ability to do it without tech. I love my tech as much as the next guy.....er, gal. But I never like not being able to do something with "just the basics" in case of emergency.

You'd like my car @septembersrain, '04 Mazda 3. Umm, it's fanciest thing is automatic windows, well, maybe the single CD player. 5 speed manual and no digital nothing, well, the odometer is digital. I have a BT thingy stuck in my lighter/charger that I play Pandora/tunes through my speakers with. Yeah, there's no tech in my car! When I do have to get a new one I'm going to be overwhelmed with all the 'stuff' they have in them now.

The problem I have with all the tech stuff is that it breaks... My car has for mirrors that move at whim, doors that may or may not open automatically, digital displays that periodically show gibberish.

Wind conditions. Be thankful if they are passenger jets. We get C-130s at rooftop level.
The buggers travel in packs of 3 to boot. We've looked for tire marks on roof after a couple of low passes. The planes are also so slow appearing on landing that they look like UFOs.

If you watch the NY Mets, you will hear a jet overhead frequently. Citi field not far from La Guardia.

I wouldn't buy a new one. Take the money and get my Toyota Tacoma rebuilt.

The only way things will get safer on the roads, is when all cars are self driving. Take humans out of the loop. I would say most accidents are caused by lack of observation. That and impatience. Or just plain stupidity. The tech we have now can't possibly handle the utter idiocy displayed by some drivers on the road.

I was initially disappointed when the car I bought didn't have rear parking sensors. But then I thought, maybe this would have made me less observant. I'd be too reliant on the sensors.

I'd love to have the rear camera views on my pickup. I back up to a trailer almost daily and it would save me a great deal of effort to align hitch to trailer.

I once backed over a brand new bicycle that my first born had not even learned to ride yet. A bit of looking prior to getting into the vehicle would have been the ticket. A camera system might have saved the day but human error was the culprit.

Why are salt packets always full and pepper packets seldom are?

Yes, yes and YES! I always ask for one salt and several pepper. When I open the salt is not over the food because it's generally full to the top and I rip off one corner to stern the flow. Peeler are obsessed with salt AND....

WHY do they add sugar to all the premade foods even spaghetti sauce and salsa??? My kids won't eat them, even if they are starving, it's terrible and unnecessary especially given people's health these days.

I just have to build the confidence to run the wire the length of the truck.
