Random Thought Thread

I have a little box which plugs into the back of my car stereo. Supposed to interface with my phone so I can play music through it.

It doesn't work with my phone.

But it does play music off an USB drive. Except the latest firmware versions broke its ability to show song title and artist... or play .wma files (even though it's supposed to be able to handle that format).

I'll give you three guesses what 70% of my music collection is encoded with, and the first two don't count.

Luckily, I found a firmware download from last year in my archives and I was able to downgrade.

Currently, the device resides in my glovebox, which is not the best place for it-- too hot, and inconvenient for accessing with either a thumb-drive or the USB cable for the phone (which still doesn't work; though my tablet does).

I am thinking about mounting the box under the center console column and running cables from it, mounting them to the console somewhere... I have a couple USB adapters for computers I could use... I found a dual USB plug for newer Prius'-- one plug for charging, the other for the stereo interface-- which I could adapt, but it would cost me $65 or so.

I found a USB/Aux Jack combo for a Passat which I could wire into the box (it also has an Aux function), and that would only set me back $30, but I would have to open up the box and get creative with the wiring, I think (same as with the adapters I have on hand).

I found a DC-DC converter that would push up to 3 amps, sufficient to charge most phones and tablets, for some $15 or so, $18 for two.

I could wire one of those into an adapter for charging stuff...

Trying to figure out the best overall solution for the best price.

Maybe it's better in your neck of the woods, but out here in the middle of an environmental, cultural and largely intellectual desert, I have the choice of listening to one of the following playlists:

the same top 15 Country songs
the same top 15 'Pop' songs
the same 25 'Classic' Rock songs, mostly AC/DC and Metallica
NPR
angry egotistical white people talking
Mexican

... sorry, I don't understand a lick of Spanish, and it pretty much sounds like the 'Pop' channel, with more accordions.


... and don't get me started on the commercials...

Galaxy Note 10.1 crashed again, and lost the my notes for a quiz. If this happens again, I may just sell it and get the newer version, or maybe just use my Chromebook for school. I can't explain how much I depend on my tablets to work. Like I said before, I am a machine to my devices. With one machine broken, we are nothing but spare parts.
 
I've been on vacation to Canton OH. Got to see the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
