Help Randomly Turning Off?

The "put out the sim card and the battery" thing didn't work for me. Still experiencing SODs
The next step is to format the SD card. Waiting for the news from pirul83...

Hello everybody!

I have been facing a problem with my Smasung Galaxy turning off randomly, even with the battery full etc...
I have tried the suggested solutions such turning off the WIFI, or downloading updates etc.. nothing helped.

Yet 05 days ago exactly, I have found a solution for me, actually I realized that the battery was somehow lose and dont fit exactly in its place, there is less than 1 mm space, its tiny, but if u hold your finger on the battery while in its place and move your finger left and right or up and down, you will see that it is slightly moving, which prevents a full contact for the electrical charge to pass to the phone.
So I tried this while the phone was on, and the second i touched the battery and moved it the phone went off.

So I placed a tiny piece of a busniss card (for thickness) on two sides, one on the bottom and the other on the side, and the battery was fixed in its place.

Since I did this the phone is NOT TURNING OFF as it used to be :)

I hope this was the problem in my case, and I hope it will help others, that is if this was the problem :)

Hi there evgeny9, i'm happy to report that I haven't had a SOD since i format the MicroSD... that's 72hrs... this is the longest i've been without SOD, so i hope this is the solution, i'll keep you guys posted ;)

Hi guys,
I've been using this phone for some time now and I too have been experiencing these same issues. Now the only thing I can say that really does work is to just turn your wifi of. It isn't that much trouble since we (samsung galaxy ace owners :P) have an awesome notificationbar. But for now, I guess the only thing we can do is wait for samsung or andriod (whoever has the solution) to come out with a solution. Hope they come out with this soon. Really disappointing, I know.

Greets

Same issues here, got siginificantly worse after the latest update. people can still call me but i cannot pick up. I have always had wifi on never sleep so that is not the issue. Would appreciate updates from people who are testing various options. I also already have juice defender which turns the wifi off once the screen is turned off, Will be experimenting with these settings to see in anything helps.

I am a HTC Desire Z user and my phone has the SOD issue as well. Whenever the screen shuts off and I just leave it on the desk for a while, it won't turn back on, sometimes. Doesn't happen every day, but frequent. I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 two weeks ago, problem still happening.

Now a week ago, my wife bought a Galaxy Ace, and guess what? Same problem! And also noticed with that phone that it sometimes refuses to charge, even when the phone is on, which can only be solved by a battery pull.

So I am convinced that:
  1. this is not a hardware issue
  2. this is not a Samsung issue
  3. this IS an Android issue
  4. Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) does NOT solve the issue.
  5. it's not the 'loose battery' since the battery in my HTC is not loose

I have now installed WiFi KeepAlive on my HTC. Will try the SD card format on my wife's Ace. Any other tips are welcome!

Update: Since installing WiFi KeepAlive yesterday, I've had 5 SODs that I've noticed, one of which instantly discharged my battery completely (that was at 80% a few minutes before) so at reboot it only gave the message "please connect your charger immediately" and didn't even start the GUI. Scary stuff. So no need to say that I've instantly removed that app again and am hoping for a better solution now!

stax65, thank you for an interesting link. It seems that the problem is bigger and more widespread than we thought.
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to format my SD card, as my phone's display had broken: the image became fuzzy (and blocks of pixels can be seen) :(
So, I took it to the service centre (and now I'm waiting for it to get repaired). But it seems not to be connected with the SOD-problem.And I don't even hope that it will help with our issue.
So, I'm waiting for the news from pirul83.

I have the Samsung Ace for a few weeks now, and since day one it had the SOD problem. I've done some research about it, but didn't manage to fix it yet.
it started with the original 2.2.1 firmware and it's the same with the 2.3.4

I found that the device dies only when WIFI is on with the following logic:
1. never happens when the device is within range of my home/office access point
2. never happens when WIFI is off
after it happens, it's possible to pull the debug log with ADB. in the log there's "*overflow*" marked on the time of death under the battery logger.
3. always happens when I pass with the phone in some specific locations

I'm now testing the SD solution (working without SD at all) - it seems promising (working well for a few hours), and makes sense - since, the WIFI is connected on SDIO and shares the bus with the SD card.

there's no question about it being related 100% to the WIFI.
I think the problem is not even in the wifi driver - but on the SDIO bus driver.

(btw, I have the same problem with the samsung GIO ...)

Why don't you all try JuiceDefender ?
I was trying a lot of methods but the SOD still there until I install Juicedefender it solved my problem :-)
This definitely is my WIFI problem because I will never got SOD if I only switch on my WIFI when I need it.

JuiceDefender disables the wifi.
I want my device to have wifi connection all the time - and in the same time, work ! I know it's an unrealistic demand - but that's life.

Juicedefender does not solve the problem. I have had that since day one and still get the SOD issue. Juice defender has always been set to automatically turn off wifi on screen off, this does not solve the issue at all.

Working without SD card looks promising. Currently, my phone is running for over 24 hours without SOD (it's a personal record).
I'll wait a few more hours before starting to experiment with the SD card.
If so, it seems as a collision on the SD bus between the storage SD and the WIFI SDIO.
I don't think it's related to the SD model, since i had this issue with two different cards (both Samsung 2gb and Kingston 4gb). I've seen some remarks about reformatting it with bigger cluster size. This can change some of the timings and maybe cause the SOD to be less frequent - but i don't believe it's a real solution. a real solution must be a patch to the android.

I formatted SD few days ago (format trough phone), and since then I didn't have SOD problems. But, maybe it's only temporary luck. I use Juice Defender and purposely I set it to turn on wifi every 30 minutes.

Hi guys i think that at least for me, formatting the SD card fixed the issue, i haven't had a SOD since the 15th, thats 7 days, before the format i had an SOD almost every day, so seven days without it, i think i fixed my issue. I'll let you know how things keep going :)

The first thing needed in order to debug this issue - is the ability to recreate the SOD, and fast.
Well, I've found a scenario causing the SOD in a few minutes:

1. turn on the device
2. connect to WEP secured WIFI hotspot.
3. forget the AP configuration
4. let the device stay in this state

(you can repeat 2-4, it's the same)
it takes 5-10 minutes, and the device goes into SOD.

using this, I've debuged the following SD card states.
1. using no card at all - works fine, no SOD over 24 hours.
2. 4GB SDHC Sandisk - SOD
3. 2GB SD Samsung (original card) - original format, phone format, windows format, FAT16, FAT32, 16k blocks, 32k blocks - all SOD
4. 2GB SD inserted, but unmounted - SOD

from the last test it seems as if it's not related to the SD itself, that it's a problem with the SDIO bus / driver.
either the driver communicates with the WIFI and the sdcard interferes and the driver can't get out of it, or the sdcard has some constant effect on the bus (load) which causes all kind of problems - specificly after sleep, when both devices are initialized (sdcard and wifi)

any ideas ?

Hi guys,

I'm facing the same problem here. I tried the "NEVER" disable WiFi option, but this didn't resolve the problem :S

I guess that there is a possibility that this is related to the auto-rotate option, because I noticed that after restarting the phone after an SOD the auto-rotate doesn't work until the phone gets restated again.

I just installed JuiceDefender but I'm not sure how to configure it, it's on "balanced" mode now, I'll just wait and see what would happen!

Note: I'm using the original 2GB SD card from Samsung.

bad news, JuiceDefender didn't solve the issue, I just got an SOD :S

Do I need to change any settings?

I just uninstalled JuiceDefender and installed WiFi Keep Alive hopefully this app will prevent the WiFi to go to sleep which will eliminate the need for initializing it!

Now I wait...

I was receiving this problem or a similar one
- screen doesn't wake up, phone would 'ring' (hear a tone from the ringing side) but would not run thing ringer on the phone - no missed calls displayed later either. Samsung KIES doesn't connect and I couldn't get the ADB to list the device.

I am running a stock 2.3.3 that was preinstalled on the phone.

Have tried running juice defender (free version), wifi manager, setting wifi to never sleep, etc, but still kept getting the issue.

I was running JuicePlotter as well and could see that it would stop saving the data while it's not responding. When looking in the system's own battery monitor, I can see the 'Phone signal' does infact stay without any breaks in the graph but Wi-Fi, Awake, and all the others have gaps where the phone stops responding.

First time I plugged my 8GB card into the phone, it corrupted the file system and the wifi switched off and wouldn't switch back on. Even switching the phone off and turning it on wouldn't allow the WiFi to turn on, I had to pull the battery and put it back for it to work.

The phone did it again the next day to the same SD card later on when I tried to mount it via USB. Same thing happened with the WiFi too when that happened. Received an error loading the module into the kernel to start the wifi.

I'm thinking the SD card is a bit sus because I have been having issues with it on my old Nokia so I've switched to the 2GB card that was included with the phone.

Since I switched to the included SD card I haven't had an issue. I've had the wifi connected solidly for a whole day without the issue.

I've only had the phone since Thursday, had the problem all Friday and only switched the SD card yesterday morning so it's probably way too early to tell but I'm hoping that was the issue. I ordered it online so I'm trying to avoid having to wipe it and pay to send it back.

It does seem to indicate there is infact could be a strange link between the SD card and the WiFi though since when the SD card was having issues the WiFi died too.

Just thought I'd add my experience to see if it is similar to what others are experiencing.
