Help Randomly Turning Off?

Thanks daolak, I installed Load Monitor on my phone with the same config. Currently, I'm using WiFi keep Alive to keep the WiFi on in addition to Load Monitor to prevent the phone from going to sleep, I know the combination looks a real battery killer, but I think it's worth a try! Let's just wait and see...

Regarding pirul83, I don't think it's the same problem I'm facing since I removed the MicroSD card during an SOD and the phone didn't get back up!

Update: I still didn't get any SOD since last week's change. But, I got a couple of WiFi hangs and errors which caused the phone to be reset automatically, but still no SOD (you have to compromise with battery juice though)!

Did samsung make any response or comment regarding this issue? Because as far as I can see, all the users are affected and they HAVE TO do something! I guess that this is a hardware problem and they are not able to make a quick fix for it (they are stuck!)

My update is that retailer refused to swap, so it went to the local Samsung techs to 'repair.'

It has come back today worse than it went in. First SoD was less than 24 hours after it came back from repair, and I've also had to do two other reboots due to text message not sending and WiFi not connecting.

My SoD today was when I was out and about too, so not even at home like the previous ones...! This was with Launcher Pro and Juice Defender installed. I will install load monitor and the WiFi Alive apps too, and see if that makes a difference over the next 48 hours.

I am going to contact Samsung here to see if they will replace directly, seeing as how retailer won't (and I can sympathise with them - NZ consumer law states they must provide a remedy, and 'repair' is included - but because its a known fault in the phone itself, I think Samsung should replace this themselves.)

Might consider an upgrade to Galaxy S, as my husband has no problem with his.

seems like everybody having the same frozen out/ sleeping problems....well I've put my WIFI to never sleep mode & its still happen...however, i do noticed that, if we have use our phone & let the screen to goes off by itself rather then press power button to off the screen, it will caused phone went into sleep mode/no respone mode....

2. when my phone in lock mode, press power button once to check time & date, then i just let the phone screen as it is...screen will turn off after the pre-set time....moment later when i press the power button again, it went no reply/respone, like dead phone ...

both above scenario: if somebody call you, they will not notice your phone is off, but infact the phone just doesn't ring...

hi..i just bought SGA about 1week then i sufferd from this SOD..damn!just call samsung service centre and they ask me to bring the phone to re-flash the firmware and i hope the fix it..btw i think it's not software problem but it's hardware problem.Guys don"t give up early :)

I am new to this forum (joined today) and having the same Sleep of Death problem with my Galaxy ACE, which I have had for about 6-weeks.

I have spent time reading through every thread here and until I stumbled upon you guys I thought the SOD issue was perhaps just a power saving mode. The reason for this thought is that my phone only suffers SOD when the battery power is getting low

I got a new SOD today :S
But it was like 48 hours since the one before it.

I'm out of ideas here...

Hi there Malalation, first of all tnx very much for your suggestion.
I tried too, to install and run Wi-fi keep alive app, and I've been successfully using the phone for more the 48hrs without any SOD ... until some minute ago ... :(

Anyway, I'm not sure that wi-fi keep alive was running when it occured: after I have turned my phone back on, I started Task manager and I didn't see WFKA running in the task list. After I started it manually after switch on, I looked at running processes list in Task Manager and see it in the list.
On other hands, I mean that this morning after I woke up, I turned on the phone and I didn't checked if WFKA was running or not.. (I didn't find any "Automatic start-up" in the app options) At this point, I have the suspiction that when SOD occurred last time, it was not running.
So my question: when you got last SOD, are you really sure you were running Wi-fi keep alive before spontaneous switch off ??

If so, I think I will flash the phone back to 2.3.3 with KPKN firmware, that seems to solve the problem.

Tnx in advance.

P.S. The comic staff, is that phone goes SOD all the time I enter the same bar to have a coffee.. when I get out from there and I checked the phone, I find it turned off!!! It would be nice to investigate it further to understand the reasons/origin of this bug. May be in that place there is some sort of wifi signal that messes something up .. :)

No way! :(
Yesterday I got SOD twice in the afternoon and this time I'm pretty sure I started manually Wi-fi keep alive app. Thus, the use of this app did not solve.

So, yesterday night I flashed up KPN firmware as suggested here, and let's hope!
Anyway until now I didn't have any SOD occurance any longer, neither in the place when it always occured with previous rom. It's a nice wish already! ;)

I'll keep U informed.

Best,

I have the Samsung Ace for a few weeks now, and since day one it had the SOD problem. I've done some research about it, but didn't manage to fix it yet.
it started with the original 2.2.1 firmware and it's the same with the 2.3.4

I found that the device dies only when WIFI is on with the following logic:
1. never happens when the device is within range of my home/office access point
2. never happens when WIFI is off
after it happens, it's possible to pull the debug log with ADB. in the log there's "*overflow*" marked on the time of death under the battery logger.
3. always happens when I pass with the phone in some specific locations

I'm now testing the SD solution (working without SD at all) - it seems promising (working well for a few hours), and makes sense - since, the WIFI is connected on SDIO and shares the bus with the SD card.

there's no question about it being related 100% to the WIFI.
I think the problem is not even in the wifi driver - but on the SDIO bus driver.

(btw, I have the same problem with the samsung GIO ...)

I have had this issue w/o WIFI, overflow would make sense, you would think they would fix that in FW/API. I suspect memory overheat caused by radiation from the internal wifi antenna, pretty sure prob is thermal is it often happens when on charge or in pocket etc.. Below is my earlier findings/post

OK, OK....

I am an electronic technician (amongst other things :-)

And I have a Sammy GIO that occasionally gets the SOD (sometimes not for 3 weeks at a time) I use Wifi all the time. The situations seem to vary, but I can give you guys a good idea what it most likely is:

I think it may be the battery temp- cut-out, when the battery is under load, it may cut-out as a safety measure to stop it exploding and burning ur leg with it's acidic contents. Other ppl have said battery contacts (ie; clean and service the contacts on battery and phone as they may loose contact when moved suddenly) This doesn't really work for me as I have never had the SOD whilst using the shake feature, I guess it could expand/shrink under load, but the issue is more likely to be a memory or CPU temp cut-out than it is contacts. The issue occurs across all Galaxy model phones AFAIK

FORGET WIFI! One of the first things I did was to mess with the Wifi (alot, as I'm also a network engineer) and observed NO correlation between Wifi and SOD Except: Perhaps the Wifi increases the demand on the battery. With my phone, it almost ONLY OCCURS WITH GPS ON! and often if GPS and Wifi is on, I've had it during a phone call recently also. I will concede that it could also be SW/FW related. Perhaps the PH goes into screen-off mode and gets over-loaded and then basically force closes the background service/activity(and/or gets memory leak when it looses/sees Node WPSK2 anyone?) needed to recover with the 'on resume' or whatever (Im new to Andriod/Java) Someone could test this using a sleep-lock (An app that prevent5s the ph sleeping, many apps have this feature, I have never had the issue whilst using apps in this manner (so far)

Everyone needs to put pleasure on Samsung! It;s their job to fix it, their behavior is beginning to suggest to me that perhaps they do know what is causing it and pretend it doesn't exist, as it is a design flaw and might be a battery cut-out to prevent explosion (possibly death) and they dont wont ppl to know cause they might start hot-wiring/overriding the battery to stay on and finding out the hard way... There are plenty of threads on this around, you would think this would have been addressed by Now!!!!!

Keep searching and pls post any fixes/info you find!

EDIT: I am using Watchdog, and have noticed SOD happens more when I have that installed, But GPS really seems to be the trigger on mine

...

This could make sense ... because ... I've just got a SOD on my Samsung Ace even if I flashed KPN rom.

The situation was this one:
- I had everything enabled in my phone (Wifi, GPS, BT, Accounts sync, etc.)
- I was getting out from my office where I had Wireless connection, and phone was regulary connected over wifi.
- I went to the bar where (I know) there is availability of a wifi (unknown to my phone. It displays like a wifi logo w/ a question mark).
- I kept the phone in my trouser's pocket !
- I felt the phone making a vibration in my pocket, because I installed Missed Message Flasher Free app, in order to notify me some incoming message (sms, lost calls, mail notifications). I installed it because of the missing flashing led in case of notification. I received a mail in gmail account, so it vibrated.
- I made it vibrate twice, then I gently pull it out from my pocket, and when I pushed the power button to unlock the screen .... it was dead!

So I pushed button for 7 secs or more to restart the phone.

I described to you this nth experience of mine, in order to give to someone some data on which investigate further .. :-(
I hope this could be useful, anyway I agree w/ Danthaman, I think too at this point, that problem is related to a thermal/battery issue.

I hope that all people share their expiriences, so maybe one day we can reach a conclusion to be drawn..

Best,
G.

Is anyone aware of any joint formal challenge at Samsung to get this sorted. It is clear they must know of this fault yet all they tell you to do is return the handset every time. This just stinks of being fobbed off.

I am encountering a similar problem with my Samsung Galaxy Ace which I purchased on the 3 July 2011 from The Carphone Warehouse, Regency Street London. My device turns off abruptly a couple of times a day. I contacted the retail shop but they are unwilling to exchange it for a new one. To complicate matters I do not reside in the UK. Is anyone aware of a Samsung email address where I can lodge a complaint directly?

Legally, if unfit for purpose, your claim is with the seller.
Anyway, a simply google search and you'll find this - register and you're away

Yesterday i received my samsung galaxy ace from samsung centre where they re-flash back the firmware after my phn got SOD but it still SOD when i finish charge my battery same day. Then the next day i do a manual lock and clear memory seems like just fine with my phn until now theres no SOD.So maybe after u had open any application like games, music, message, phone call or others try to clear memory on your task manager and do it 2-3 times depend on how you used it (maybe 5 times).Just want to share with you guys maybe this would help :-)

I was been experiencing the same problem (SOD's) the first week after buying the SGA phone - after going thru this forum i installed "load monitor" app, set "wake lock" on and haven't had the problem since (although as i read your quotes, i dont think load monitor really helps everyone or is a final solution)

Seen number of complains about the problem on the Czech websites being sorten out thru official complaint, so i agree Samsung must know about the problem ... hope this will be solved by Samsung one day forever, so that i dont have to use some app to help me out ...

........for what its worth I did the *#*#526#*#* thing, re-booted the phone and everything has been fine since. However, the weather here in the UK has been pretty cool over the last week or so, so not ruling out heat being a factor yet (my ACE was getting SOD in my trouser pocket). The issue, therefore, may return.

I had the same problem but i realised its because the wifi was using the juice. When wifi or B/T or GPS is not needed, Take it off. Saves battery. Nothing Happens now
