Help Randomly Turning Off?

Wow...so, I googled the Samsung Ace random shutdown - Sleep of Death, and found this page. I am in New Zealand.I am onto my second phone that suffers from SoD.

The first phone that had it only did it twice in the middle of the night, whilst simultaneously draining the battery within hours, before I took it back.Currently, the SoD only occurs on average once a day. It is only at home (which does make me wonder about the WiFi) but there is no rhyme or reason to when it happens. Twice it has happened while its been in my hand, and I've been in the middle of something, but have just paused for some reason...so it seems clear that turning WiFi off when not in use, or leaving it on, won't make any difference. :(

I do have an SD card that didn't come with it originally...I can't format it - and on the phone, format = erase...so not sure I want to go down that road.. The kids have the Samsung SD card in the old VF845 and use it as an MP3 player. :D I COULD faff around swapping all the music around, but not sure if its worth all the time and effort if this isn't a guaranteed fix...and it seems like nothing is.

I am already running the free version of Juice Defender, and have just changed the setting to 'aggressive' so it will be interesting to see if that makes a difference.

Its very disappointing that Samsung are virtually ignoring this problem and pretending it doesn't exist. :(

I am of two minds whether to see if a fix..well, fixes it..or just try taking it back to the retailer. I think they will swap within two weeks, but will address any issues as per our local Consumer Guarantees Act, but that would mean having it sent away. :(The iPhone is looking better and better... but its out of my budget, dangnammit...and I LIKE android otherwise!!

I just worry that the SoD means my alarm won't go off in the morning on a work day, or that, like someone else said, someone may try to get hold of me re: kids and can't get me.Its freakin' annoying

The first thing needed in order to debug this issue - is the ability to recreate the SOD, and fast.
Well, I've found a scenario causing the SOD in a few minutes:

1. turn on the device
2. connect to WEP secured WIFI hotspot.
3. forget the AP configuration
4. let the device stay in this state

(you can repeat 2-4, it's the same)
it takes 5-10 minutes, and the device goes into SOD.

using this, I've debuged the following SD card states.
1. using no card at all - works fine, no SOD over 24 hours.
2. 4GB SDHC Sandisk - SOD
3. 2GB SD Samsung (original card) - original format, phone format, windows format, FAT16, FAT32, 16k blocks, 32k blocks - all SOD
4. 2GB SD inserted, but unmounted - SOD

from the last test it seems as if it's not related to the SD itself, that it's a problem with the SDIO bus / driver.
either the driver communicates with the WIFI and the sdcard interferes and the driver can't get out of it, or the sdcard has some constant effect on the bus (load) which causes all kind of problems - specificly after sleep, when both devices are initialized (sdcard and wifi)

any ideas ?

I wonder if there is a specific app involved that we have all installed on the SD card. Then once it tries to access the wifi, ( which it thinks is on) something goes wrong and the phone gets stuck in a loop. dunno just an idea.

guys, I've done some more statistics, and tested also some old cards (256mb) - same behavior.
the most important test is the one with the card unmounted. (inserted but unmounted) - in this case i still get SOD, but it can't be any installed software on the card or format properties.
it is a collision on the SD bus (most probably)

I did notice i have a special situation here at home, where i get SOD every 5 minutes (Very good for debug) - while at the office it's only every few hours.
I think that the number (and maybe the type) of the AP here is the cause. (i have over 25 AP in range)

i also never got SOD when it's connected to the pc/usb, and I think (need to verify) that also not when connected to the wall charger.

also - yesterday I got for the first time SOD during a phone call. it was a long phone call (~1 hours) and it didn't disconnect - at the end of the call I've noticed the phone is dead, and i could not hang up. This also explains why the phone seems online during SOD.

and again, without SD card i never got SOD.

@error974 are you saying use JD to turn off wifi on a schedule. I will give that a try amd report back.

My JD setup to prevent SOD:
1. Turn off WiFi when screen off
2. On schedule, turn only mobile network, not WiFi

This setup worked for me.

As i wrote earlier, since I formated SD i didn't experience any SOD. I'm on KPL (2.3.3) firmware.

bad news, JuiceDefender didn't solve the issue, I just got an SOD :S

Do I need to change any settings?

I just uninstalled JuiceDefender and installed WiFi Keep Alive hopefully this app will prevent the WiFi to go to sleep which will eliminate the need for initializing it!

Now I wait...

I got a new SOD today :S
But it was like 48 hours since the one before it.

I'm out of ideas here...

guys,

Has anyone tried installing an app that prevents the phone from going to sleep? I understand that this will kill the battery, but I think it's worth a try!

Do you know any apps would do that?

I set the screen timeout to never.
Even then a SOD occured (WITH SCREEN ON).
had to do a hard reset.

Yes, there is "Load Monitor". Prevents SOD's very well on my phone.

I found another workaround, turning off sleep mode.
Maybe there are easier ways to do it, but i did it like this:

(copied the instructions from another forum):

- Download and install a free app Load Monitor.
- Under its preferences check the following on...
- Add Notification, Only notify high load, Auto start, and most importantly Wake Lock.

The wake lock prevents the phone from going into sleep mode, now i'm already 24 hours without shutdowns. I also set the update interval to 2 hours for the Load monitor, so it doesn't bug me often.

The downside must be battery consumption, i assume that the sleep mode does save up some juice. But at the moment i'd rather worry for the battery than if the phone is on or not. :)

Hi Everybody,

i had the same problem. My Ace would shut down without warning. Sometimes in the morning the alarm wouldn't go off because the phone was not on (i now have an alarm clock because...well....you neverk now).
o2 in Germany gave me a new Ace since they tried to repair it once and it still had the same problem. For now it works but we will see, i won't get my hopes up.

:sigh: Oh well, Launcher Pro didn't do it for me :sigh: Had a combo of that plus JD on aggressive, but got a SoD tonight. You (a pp) were quite right - its not truly off, as when I tried to ring it, it would ring on the phone I was ringing FROM, but no activity from the phone itself. A long press (10sec+) on the power button brought it back to life. However, it was the longest period without SoD - over 48hrs, whereas it was occurring daily or even twice daily before.

Launche Pro has been great in terms of usabilty, so I might keep it... Load Monitor you say..hmm..ok might try that.

Will be at the mall where the retailer I bought it from is at, so will have a chat to them. I am of two minds whether to try to swap it as the one I get could be better, or could be worse..! Its a real gamble...

hi there Im new here. I faced the same issue since I bought my phone and Ive noticed something is not mentioned here.

The problem doesnt occur if you put your phone in charge (USB / AC Adapter).
Btw I put Display Stand By time to 10 mins and since Ive done it the prob havent reoccurred yet.

ciao Fabrizio!

Any news from pirul83 and their attempted fix??

Hey there guys, i'm still here... it's been almost 2 weeks since i format the SDcard, and i've only had ONE SOD, before the format i was having one every 24-48hrs so, even tho i didnt fix the problem completely i'm very pleased with the improvement :) whenever you guys have an SOD try and remove the MicroSD card without restarting the phone and see if that "wakes the phone up".
That's what happened with me :)

Thanks daolak, I installed Load Monitor on my phone with the same config. Currently, I'm using WiFi keep Alive to keep the WiFi on in addition to Load Monitor to prevent the phone from going to sleep, I know the combination looks a real battery killer, but I think it's worth a try! Let's just wait and see...

Regarding pirul83, I don't think it's the same problem I'm facing since I removed the MicroSD card during an SOD and the phone didn't get back up!

It seems to be a GUI issue (TouchWiz)
Please try to use other ones such as Launcher Pro .... and give FeedBack

What I did was : took out d sim n battery fr 10 mins n then inserted only battery back n booted d phone.
Then I took a backup of SD card n formatted in my comp (windows 7) (not quick format, FULL FORMAT ) n then turned off, inserted sim, rebooted, copied all files to my SD card back...
No problems since 3 n a half days
I ges this could be d final solution :)
Fingers crossed..

Do try it out guys..

I also had quite some SOD cases but all seem to be related indeed to WIFI at other locations than at home so .... just for convenience I installed WiFi@Home

We'll see how that turns out for now .....

edit :
turns out you have to use APN (3g/edge/gprs) to make this work and I prefer to have that set to manual (APNDroid)

so now gonna try AutoWifi OFF Lite

Don't waste time trying out isit sd, wireless or hardware problem. Is android 2.2 firmware problem. Because my friends that using galaxy mini and galaxy s sl having the same problem sod. Just update to 2.3 using odin loader will solve the problem. You guys can go samfirmware.com to download. I am using kph 2.3.4 firmware no sod for 3months. But before update remember to copy down your apn information. Or else use can't use data plan. But you are on your risk to flash 2.3.4 maybe the device will brick but unlikely. If flash first time don't work try flashing again.

I have 2.3.3 Gingerbread and still SOD and from other forums I have read that even 2.3.4 has SOD .....
Gonna try with freshly formatted sd card (32Gb Sandisk pfff that takes a while to full format .... )

today i had 3 SODs with newly formatted SD card, 2.3.4 XXKPH firmware with go launcher ex.

now i am using coderom v2 with go launcher ex. i'll see how it works.

i never have any sods when i am at home so i am thinking of using wifi@home app as a workaround.

UPDATE:

Still used LoadMonitor but eats my processing power and battery life. There are times that I just turn OFF wifi and ON if just needed but really needs active monitoring of the galaxy ACE.

On continuing experimentation I have tried this recently:

WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application
Set to "always ON'
Advanced Options "Enable Workaround 2"
Advanced Options "Enable Debug Logs"

You can read the help in advanced options to see description of other workaround methods.

So far so good in this APP and no symptoms for more than 24H. Will update if necessary....

UPDATE

From 19June to 02Aug, no SOD using this method (WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application)

After being repaired (as I wrote earlier, the screen was broken), my Galaxy Ace is still experiencing SODs.
Formatting SD card by the means of the phone also didn't work for me.
The only thing left is to wait for the 2.0.4 official release...
