Rant: Back to root

So, I don't want to be rooted. I just don't. I don't have anything against it, and I get it, I have a Nexus-class device, how is it possible that I'm not rooted from day 0? The thing is, I want to use the device the way Google intended it to be used. Too bad I'm on Verizon and that means no Google Wallet, and it means not 4.2.

So I'll be rooting again in a week or so in preparation of the most Vanilla 4.2 ROM I can find. Yay for Verizon -__-

1. You can install google wallet yourself, without rooting. Unrooted android can sideload any APK. I'm on Verizon and like many others, I have Wallet. Verizon can't keep it off your phone, they can only make it unavailable on the market.

2. Root is convenient and opens up some very useful options, but certainly isn't necessary, especially on a vanilla Nexus device. However, since you ARE on Verizon (like me) you almost have to root if you want to stay up to date. Verizon's updates come 1-2 months later than the Google direct versions. It sucks, but at least you have the option of running a custom ROM. Alternatively, I just wait for the Verizon leak and install that immediately. Usually cuts the delay in half.

Bricking your phone is almost impossible. You have to do something really stupid to irreversibly brick your phone. There are toolkits that will root it for you, all you have to do is click buttons. Or you can do it manually. Either way, as long as you don't disconnect the phone from the computer or pull the battery while you are doing it, you won't brick your phone. Bricked phones were sooooooo 3 years ago.

Mostly what Tim K said.

If you don't want to root don't. Patience is a virtue, or so I'm told, I don't believe it though:P

As far as rooting, Some phones can be dicey, but the GN is pretty much DESIGNED to be rooted.

It's probably more likely that you will drop your phone and crack the screen then actually "brick" your phone. The root forums are full of people screwing up and 99% of the time its "fixable"...
