Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Waking up at 5 on Saturday. My gears are ground.

0400 every Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. On the road somewhere between 0500 and 0520.

Regardless of whether a certain grand-daughter has been kicking my ribs in all night or not.

Might have to drive eight hours to fix a plane that isn't actually broken, then drive back, today. That's the price of being employed, for me.

The Siamese decided she wanted canned food at 1:30A. Woke me up. The Snowshoe has been biting on her butt again and I put a collar on her. The feral goes ballistic when the Snowshoe wears the collar, and tries to pen the Snowshoe in one room. The feral has a growl like a dog.

No damn sleep at all.

The Snowshoe had a anal gland problem. The vet treated it so it healed right, but she's starting to lick on spot raw. The vet isn't open until Monday. So I have the joy of a paranoid feral cat.

Getting up early isn't usually a problem. My father had most of us up by 4:30A. The kid skated and had to be on the ice at that time also.

SouthAfrican is quite similar to Dutch. One word though... what is bruizer?

:D

I don't know 500% but they are both extremely similar!

Hoe is jy "kaat72"? :)

Hoe is jou ma se skottlebraai!?

Hahahahaa! Oh my GOD I LOVE that joke!

(Don't be offended! I am full of poo!)

(Just joking vrou!! Nie skiet my asseblief! Dis kak snaaks ne? :D)

xD

HAHAHA!

(Hmmm by the by... do you know what a "Skottle Braai" is nw that I think about it?

I don't think the word "Skottel Braai" is original Dutch?

Hmmm... I don't know.... I would like to find out but I am not 7 gazzillion percent sure! :)

Do you know what a "Braai" is?

Dis is n "Barbeque" in kak (shitty) Engels (English)!

Maar ek kan nie kla nie!

Ek is die skommel koning Bruizer! :D

(And no! Skommel is not "shuffle" in Dutch!

hehehehee!)

En "Bruizer" ... that is not an original Afrikaans word my friend. :)

It is just a vriendelike word some / many people say to be kind. :)

Kind of like "brother" I guess.

Oh kak ek het amper vergeet!

Our language is not called "South African" by the way! :)

Die korrek naam van die tall is "Afrikaans"! :)

In other words dit beteken "Die mense van Afrika!" or the "African People" out of respect of them. :)

There were many settlers from many parts of Europe. The Afrikaans people are actually a very wide variety of people from Europe... some French... some Italian... but the main and vast majority came originally from Nederland!

There are also a lot of English people here... like me causing trouble! :)

This is why you can pick up a crap load of my nasty insults that many people do not want to here! :D

But lets keep it that way!

I like a them insults man!

But only for fun!

Die woordorde is baie soortgelyk ne?

:)

That is quite an answer :D Dank je wel!
Afrikaans is kind of 'old Dutch'

Braai as a verb > braden in Dutch: braaien would be slang in Dutch.
Skottel > schotel, pan.
Kak = kak
Asseblief > alsjeblieft.

Easy/makkelijk :)

:D

Hey I am really happy I am learning here! :D

Baie Dankie Mevrou Kaat72! :)

Dit is n plisier! :)

AHHH!!

That reminds me now! :D

NOW I remember that part of your language!

xD

We have this dude in our complex from Holland (low lying land) and it is really cool because I can understand a lot of the stuff he says a lot of the time...

BUT!

You crazy Dutch guys keep putting the little diminutive at the end of like EVERY noun! :D

Hahahaha!

KAK funny!

I offered to give Luc a hand for something in his house and he kept saying it is on the "TAFELTJIE"...

Oh my God this story cracks my bacon right up! :D

Now there are like FOUR tables in this house and only 1 is a small coffee table or something.

It is small NOT like the other bigger tables that are NOT small! :D

He is quite an old man (but extremely cool and fun to be around! :)) and so I am helping him out with drilling to help him out because he is very old right?

So he asks me to go and get him the 1 screw driver on the "Tafeltjie" (In Afrikaans this means LITTLE Table!) but because you crazy Dutch guys keep saying "tjie" (which means little version!) at the end of EVERY single noun I then think he means the "tiny table" that was upstairs or some madness like that! :):):)

So I naturally think he means the LITTLE table so I go looking there while he is trying to hold up mount Rushmore with his bare hands.

I go back and forth about 3 times and he starts to get really freaking pissed off because his arms be gettin tired man! :)

SO then naturally he gets a bit cross and starts cussing in Dutch but I couldn't understand 500% hahahahaa! :D

Then he says: "Come on you awesome Einstein! :) Do you speak English at least?"

XD

HAHAHAHA!

Then when I see he meant the BIG table then I finally realized that his crazy Dutch confused me! :)

Then we both hose our cheap asses! :)

And that's the end of that really lame story! :)

Wow!

I can see our terms are slightly different here and there! :)

Danke for sharing! :)

I learned a lot here!

Talking of Stinky :) and South Africa and Afrikaans.... meet Heinrich(left)...he's from Cape Town. The only other foreign teacher in the whole city.

Praat van Stinky en Suid-Afrika en Afrikaans .... voldoen aan Heinrich (links) ... hy is van Kaapstad. Die enigste ander buitelandse onderwyser in die hele stad....Google Translate..LOL

People, especially a group of friends, walking slowly like how a snail moves.

The people in school who walk slowly, in a giant group in the hallway. You can't pass them!! That's just awful.

That's bad but here's what's worse: people rubber necking at accidents on the highway. You're stuck for an hour in a 5 mile queue only to find the accident's on the other carriageway and you've been help up by (expletive removed) gawping at a couple of police cars and a damaged - or worse, broken down - car.

I don't believe in capital punishment but y'know, I'm prepared to make an exception for anyone who so much as eases off on the gas .. :viking:

For the good of the gene pool.

What do ya wanna know?

Afrikaans has a lot of native words in it, either adapted or unchanged. (So does American for that matter)

Now you have Spanish, English and native Indio words in whatever Curacao calls its form of Dutch. I also saw a lot of reference to Jews. If the Jews were from Europe, the dialect was probably a form of German. Along with Hebrew. Now you really have a polyglot.

If some from South Africa and the Dutch West Indies, along with Nederlanders play for the Dutch team in the World Baseball Games, what language did they have to use? You are reading what Stinky posted - how about the pronunciation?

When the Montreal Expos were in existence, they put up slang baseball terms IN FRENCH. Spanish has its own baseball words for strike, ball, whatever. Listen to a SAP broadcast.

In the West Indies many speak Papiamento. And nowadays Dutch, cos they learn it in school. And many come to the Netherlands if they want to follow further education like a uni or find a job.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papiamento
We still have a connection with the islanders.

The connection with South Africa is long gone. The Dutch language which was (one of) the base for Afrikaans is of a couple of centuries ago. The pronounciation of Afrikaans is slightly different, which makes it harder to understand when spoken than written.

I guess they spoke English or Dutch in that team.

Hey those are some really really kick ass photos! :)

Wow man!

China looks really cool!

Hahaha! Heinrich... that is such a typical Boere / Afrikaans name. :)

I wonder if he knows any "Fricks"!? :D:D:D

No no no wait!

Don't tell him I said that okay? :)

Don't tell him I said that!

Depending on what he is like he might get offended maybe.

But I KNOW this 1 will crack him right up regardless! :D

>:-D

Mwhahahahaa!

Tell him this and I will try somehow to explain how to pronounce it somehow:

"JOU MA SE POES!!"

XD

Hehehee!

And please don't use Google Translate(TM) on that phrase because then I know you won't tell him! :D

AND I will bet you a GAZZILLION rands he will ask you mikedt if I don't have any 2 front teeth! :D:D:D

I really don't think many if not any of you guys here will get the joke but Heinrik most certainly will if he is a guy from lazy Cape Town! :)

And remember... you didn't hear this 1 from me man!

Don't even tell him who I am!

Just say "some random crazy lunatic on Android Forums kept on harassing me to say this to you and would not leave me alone..."

I am dying to hear his response! :D

I bet you he will crack right up!

xD

Ahhh!

I forgot to tell you the pronunciation!

Jou = "yo"

Like those rappers that do not know how to tie their own shoe laces.

Ma = "ma"

Just the same! :)

se (this one is harder to try and describe) = Just like "hair" but you replace the "h" with an "s" so it will sound like "sair" sort of.

I am not 500% sure how to tell you how to say that word?

"Poes" = just like the English version! :D

Hahaha!

But tell him I am really just joking and don't mean anything offensive because I am not at all a nasty racist guy or what ever! :)

xD

Mwhahahahaa!

After school, there's this place by the bus stop where I wait for the bus, where there are a whole bunch of skater kids. Freshman mostly. When I watch them waiting for the bus, it really annoys me how NONE of them EVER land any of their tricks.
I mean, I'm not a skater, I'm by no means at all a skater, and they can do more than I could even do, but still, it bugs me that they never land anything.
