Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Not sure if I'm ranting about this yet but who knows, maybe tomorrow? Is this getting infected? Won't lie, it hurts a bit. You'll definitely here me rant if I've only got one hand. The blister should be the painful bit but to me it looks like a blister because the other tooth sunk deeper

Bite. Don't worry it wasn't a person, it was a Rottweiler. He's a big softy ar heart though. He just tried to catch something after I'd been stealing off him all night. Serves me right I guess. He honestly looked more shocked at catching me than I did so he come over and licked my face.

That animal bites are less lethal than human bites pezzes me off.

OT @Shotgun84: At least it didn't go up one side and down the other. I've seen a patrol dog do that. That particular dog didn't look at all guilty. She waa ready for more but fortunately stopped when shots were fired. Not atat her, she just was scared of gunshots. I have no idea how trainers know such things. I just handled dogs.

Google is starting to get on my nerves.
Since I have been playing around with different phones, OS and custom roms lately, I have found out Google has made a few changes.
I don't keep up with all the latest news on Android and usually only find out what has changed after I run into a problem and research how to fix or get around it.
First thing was Screen Mirroring. Google and it's infinite wisdom has decided to stop Miracast support in favor of Chromecast and some phone brands have followed suit.
Now, it is the ability to edit or add APN settings depending on which carrier Sim card you have. Spent about 10 hrs on that little problem this weekend and finally gave up.

Siruis XM Octane disc jockeys member Jose Magman, hey man, why not try to vent it and talk about every thing else online, seriously, you only get paied to play the music, do not be such a "Big time guy with seriously stupid thoughts." Seriously if you are going to go into high energy, go out and work out, come to the studio completely whiped out, or better yet only go to your other job. Besides we do not want to turn into Octane or his other "station" liquid metal and just listen to you for ten hours straight and then just play drops of music, you are a mental patient if you keep this up in my book, if not you are already doomed.

Driving through LA.

Seriously, I'm a pretty laid-back driver normally, but in LA, you have to spend one moment driving 80 just to stay out of everybody else's way, and the next you are all crawling at 20mph.

On top of that, I ended up blowing a valve cover on my car, so I am going to have to limp home and pay a huge repair bill.

FWIW I've never actually had to do that, well not with Android devices anyway. Always found the APN is set correctly and automatically for the particular carrier SIM I happen to be using, this is in China and UK.

I had installed Lineage on my Motorola X4 and evidently, their was a issue with the base 8.1 that it was built from. A lot of people who had Pixel phones when 8.1 was released and was using a Sim from a MVNO ran into the same problem.
I have a Verizon Sim and the APN database in the Lineage build prop didn't have the correct APN settings and there was no way to edit or create a new APN.
Haven't tried flashing any of the Treble version yet. With the A/B System partition in most newer phones, installing custom roms is not as easy as it used to be. Starting to wonder if rooting and running custom roms even worth it anymore. Just unlocking the bootloader now will cause your phone to fail Safety Net check.

:( Been there too. Check your check valve in the intake manifold; done that too!

Sticking specifically to the Android environment, right now?

Specifically how older phones seem to have been made better than what we get now.

My first ever phone was a nokia 6020 i think. It flipped open for a full keyboard for texting and such on its tiny screen. After that, I've had a series of phones from all sorts of brands and carriers, only jumping to smart phones with the samsung transform ultra. Yet even then, two specific trends were evident.
  • Carrier locked phones never worked after year one
  • Sealed battery phones died before year one
Sealed battery phones were relegated tk the value end for a reason. While flsgship phones then had the features that made sense to invest to. Replaceable batteries. Support for custom roms. Better audio out through headphone jack. Support for expandable storage internally (and first to do so externally). Stuff that made the phone not only survive after a phone contract then but still be usable.

Nowadays, what do we get? Phones with sealed batteries, and zero battery life. Google itself locking down its phones harder than ever. Being told we can't root for "security" while google, Facebook and every bank app ever gets hacked and their data stolen every week. Phones back then differentiated enough to have unique identities between brands and models, and ecosystems. Now they're all so samey, they all look like disposable trash.

Verizon. UGH.
Four days ago my signal started going all sorts of crazy: LTE+ to 1X to nothing at all to 3G and round and round it went. I wasn't getting calls or they would drop so that's no good.

I called the next day, of course. I'd already re-booted/re-set the SIM etc. The nice lady was flummoxed because I have an Essential. Once I finally convinced her it was a smartphone running Android 9.0 (so it's a Pixel? NO!) and the issue just started and it's ONLY in my 'hood she suggested I get an extender. Umm. No. Listen to what I'm saying lady! That's not the problem. We got past that (or so I thought) and she asked me to go ahead and open the My Verizon app. I said it wasn't installed and did she really need it? More confusion, 'what do you mean it's not installed? Can you look at all your apps?'. No. No I don't have to because it's NOT THERE!! She insisted I needed it so she could check my phone (that is not the issue) so I installed it, telling her it was going to be a while because...signal issues. It finally loaded and I ran her silly request to check the phone. She told me the reason I was having trouble was because my line was forwarded to another number for 'no answer', that should be undone. Ummm, so I tried to explain Google Voice, that went over like a lead balloon! I asked, very clearly (for the 3rd time) for her to check if there were any reports of issues in my area. She could send an extender if I wanted. No, but thank you for wasting my time and patience!

I just called again. The nice man understood I didn't want an extender but did not understand it wasn't my phone and that he didn't need to look up what it was...'it's called Essential? Who makes it? Is it a smartphone? Oh, Android, OK'. It's my 'hood sir, your towers are broken. Right in the middle of all of this the call dropped. He called back but it went right to voicemail. He called again and it rang, so I answered and I said see!!! He transferred me level 2, thankfully.

That nice lady didn't care what phone I had and made no attempt to send me an extender. She looked around a bit and told me there was a ticket opened, there were other folks in the 'hood who already reported the same issues. She'd be happy to add me to the ticket and it should be fixed as it is being looked into. Thank you, that's all I wanted.
I asked her if the other 2 people had access to the ticket she found. Indeed they do but neither bothered looking.
Verizon. UGH

I hear you @Clementine_3 .

I propose ALL support lines add the following option:

"Press 666 if you are smarter than our tier 1 support agents."
Seriously!!
I do get that most people probably don't know much about their phones. But when someone calls and doesn't have a Verizon phone and it's not even a "name brand" then that person might be ahead of the curve!! Or, maybe they could just listen to the problem being reported (very clearly!!!) and try to at least have a look around for similar issues in that very area.

First rule of customer service ... never admit the problem is on our end!

We still have a land line in our house and recently we've been getting a good bit of static on the line. So I called and they wanted to blame our cordless phones. But, I had already gone out to the service box on the house, disconnected the wires going into the house, plugged an analog handset into the service port and the static was still there. They still need to send a tech out do determine if the problem is on their side of the box. ??? (Yeah, it was Verizon.)

Doctor appointments. Why do I have to arrive 15 minutes early, if they are only going to be 15-20 minutes late. And what's with this 24 hour heads up for cancellation? How the hell do I know what's going to happen tommorow?

I may be on the hook for that right now. The morning of my 10:30 appointment we got a last minute invite to a mandatory meeting...at 10:00. I called the office at 8 when they opened but was happily told they may have to bill me. Seriously?!??! Some of us have jobs...

My current insurance provider is cigna, through work. My current job is in public schools... And with split shifts, it's safe to say that I have no chance of even making a doctor visit within regular business hours.

Yet Cigna refuses to provide a way to check available hours that a doctor's office is open, while their competitors in UHC and even effing HealthNet would. Yet when i gripe about this I'm just told that i have to make the effort. When in practice, i can't make that kind of time available to me, ever.

So i end up having to spend more going to urgent care because that ends up being the only resource available to me when I'm sick or hurt enough that i might have to miss work. And try as i might, i can't get anyone at said urgent care to be my primary, despite having been there enough to have a few in mind that i would actually want to have like that.

Well, the good news is: I blew up my car just inside the drive-train warranty period, so everything is covered. Don't know the exact parts list yet, but there's an engine seal; probably the valve cover, intake manifold and PCV valve; oh and both an oil pan and water pump leaks.

These repairs, done right, will let me keep this thing going for years before having to do any major repairs (provided I stay away from LA, hah).

But, I still have to figure out how to get my son to school today without that car.
