Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I'm finally home, with Fentanyl & Lidocaine patches, and prescriptions to pick up later today... it looks like another ruptured disk in the thoracic area of the spine... off to the orthopods, and neuropods I go... gosh, I'm so tired of pain. When you get scarlet fever as a kid, one of the side effects are spinal problems as you grow. I was active, played sports as a kid, a teen, and when I became 'of age', softball leagues that meant swinging a good stick while you're consuming alcoholic beverages like both teams playing... motorcycle accidents... car accidents... it all catches up to you.

I'll turn 53 this year. As the Grateful Dead once said, "What a long, strange trip it's been."

I really can't complain. I no longer indulge in beverages of mass destruction, and I no longer subscribe to the Brewer & Shipley hubris of "One Toke Over The Line".

You can't go back, and do it all over again - with the omniprescience of "If I Knew Then, What I Know Now..." so...

To all of the younger generations here in 'da Forums' - believe this:

You're not bulletproof. LW

I used to say that one day Android would be everywhere and I'd go off and mod an appliance forum.

This whole thing is just sad.

Anyway, the one at work is one of the early ones with the separate k cup thing. A few teaspoons of Cafe Bustelo makes for decent, not expensive cup of joe.
My wife-to-be got 'Keurigged 2.0' during 'Christmas In Colorado'... she uses the containers that hold the pre-packaged flavors, and fills them with Seattle's Best (overrated and over-ground). I, as a person of Mediterranean extraction, liked the mention made of a Café Bustelo blend... now, that'll put lead in your pencil... :) LW

I'm 52 in two months time. Was playing some basketball with middle school students during the summer, ended-up on my back with feet in the air. I was OK but undignified, made me realize I'm no spring chicken any more. From now I'll stick with pool, snooker and mahjong.

Being an Englishman, cricket was my game, not basketball. LOL.

It's 5:15 am EST, and, it's cold. Even with heat running, it's cold. Man. The Arctic Blast is showing no mercy. I'm grateful for a roof over my head, but the cold is reigning supreme.

Please warm up a little... LW

Actually, spoof is more like a lampoon. We need a word in between harmless making fun of, and counterfeiting or faking with intent to deceive. A spoof is what college skits put on years ago as entertainment. Unanswered phone spam calls aren't quite counterfeiting since you can block/ignore them. With counterfeit products, you can't tell the difference most of the time and the seller of such goods may not know, either. You are both unintentional victims.

A hack can be two different things - a change of something for your convenience only, and another illegal intent.

In computer terms, spoof means pretending you are something else, whatever it's a false IP address, different browser, or OS for reasons of compatibility (or more sinister intent).

So in the case of a refilled ink cartridge, spoof can be a valid term.

Workaround is an accurate but seemingly innocuous term for what we are discussing...

What is irritating me right now is that I live in a house built for a family of four and there are nine persons packed into it...

I don't think it's quite fair that I have to do my morning computering from the confines of my car sitting in the driveway (lucky my WiFi reaches this far)...

In electronic security terms, it's called spoofing.

Plain and simple as that.

Context is important. When we talk about being rooted here, we're not talking about potted plants or how long you've lived in your village.

So digressing into "a spoof is like a lampoon" has nothing to do with anything.

And as far as hacking goes - public misappropriation of a term does make the public's use of it valid.

Words - they still mean things. And very often, misappropriation is not required. :D

I ought not laugh, as my words carry great weight.

:D (edit for the unhappy - see what I did there - words have no rest mass, they're literally weightless)

No need to invent words for a field where the terms are already well-known and well-defined.

Don't learn the tricks of the trade, learn the trade. ;) :)

Cricket, what? Methinks thou doth protest too much. Love you, man. I take off my Fentanyl patch tomorrow; I have other sports that I wish to participate in... when we get older, certain sports aren't able to be paticipated in, due to the side-effects of pain-relieving meds. I'd rather be in pain, rather than be on the sidelines... :) LW

As I get older I find I'm better at participating in the sort of sports and games that make use of a table, except for ping pong, I leave that well alone and let the younger Chinese get on with it. Yeh, not much cricket in the PRC, except for HK, and they're not too good at football(soccer) either. Only time I've been sick and needed medication was couple of years ago, had shingles. The doctor prescribed something called transfer factor, which I found out is not licensed by the FDA at all in the US, and in the UK apparently it's only licensed for equine usage, i.e. horse medicine. Doc prescribed regular anti-biotics as well, which I took didn't even bother getting the other stuff from the pharmacy.

BTW about 5 years ago, when I was in Hangzhou, I met a teacher who came from San Diego, CA, he was 75 and was playing basketball no problems with the students.

We got CBA(China Basketball Association), but China Central TV shows more NBA, and that's what most people like to see. They like Lakers or Celtics, etc, and not the Beijing Ducks or the Shanxi Dragons or whatever..LOL

And I have zero patients for Therese ghings[emoji15]

I can't stand our Toshiba laptop keyboard, mean people, and pain. My Fentanyl patch has given up, and it hurts!

I do like chess, theatre, ballet, and most of the arts - aside from the hog-calling contest in Spivey's Corner, NC... I went there once, and I won't do it again.

They gave me some other meds, but now, I can't sleep. It's been raining buckets, and the forecast looks grim. Isn't it notable that the words 'rain' and 'pain' rhyme? I might have to write a tune about it.

News flash: my new PA/Amp system arrived yesterday, but with the way I'm feeling, I haven't tried it. Send me some magical Android Forums POWERS so that I can get unstuck from the position I'm in - LW
