I don't even own a Razr and I'm irritated by the announcement. Companies need to quit screwing the consumers over. At least Apple only releases 1 new phone a year.
I would be fine if other companies put out only half of what they do now. That way I wouldn't regret spending my hard earned money.
If current Razr owners knew that the Maxx was coming, I'm sure they wouldn't have gone out and bought the original Razr.

And a bunch might not have bought the Gnex either. Or the Rezound. seriously, if the phone is just a bigger batt, why get your panties knotted? It won't affect development or performance one bit. Aside from the battery, of course.

If I'm a phone manufacturer I need to release something new as often as possible to appeal to the verizon customers that are coming off of contract for that month.
It's just good business. The best way to do this is to have 3 or 4 really new devices a year and then fill in the blank months with a redesign or two of the real popular models.
If you don't like your ultra thin razr....
GO GET SOMETHING ELSE.

I disagree and I don't think that happened. Quite frankly what I think happened is moto saw all the complaints on the razr battery life and at that point realized they should have designed it with a larger battery. I strongly suspect that if the maxx sells well they cease to produce the non-maxx.
In some ways we can applaud how quickly moto is able to react over the past 6 months on the other hand it is also clear they don't understand what to build (I'm not talking about the razr with this comment but the rapid changes over the past year of their 'premier' phone from atrix to bionic to photon to razr to razr maxx to ...
They had decent success with the droid but then didnt' respond fast enough to a changing trend. We contrast this with samsung who release the galaxy s (major flaw with gps) to galaxy s2 to [tbd]. The release cycle of their flag ship is a bit slower. The galaxy s2 was a huge improvement over the galaxy s; so I'm interested in seeing what the galaxy s3 brings.
The note is a special market phone (probably in response to streak) and the galaxy nexus is a customer order phone (ala google developer phone).

imho the razr probably should have had a larger battery to begin with and moto knows it.
That is sort of a prediciton; if the razr (non maxx) continues to sell well then that will prove that people really do want the lighter phone with a cost of shorter battery life.

Btw I also believe the bionic, atrix, photon were intended as the 'flagship' phone but they just didnt' sell that well (hence the shift to oled).
Now I fully expect 6 to 8 months for there to be a new flagship phone (the cycle has become shorter this time around in part to rapid change to technology and ICS) and there is no doubt that there will be a new phone optimzed for ICS (with no hard menu keys) and 1080p display (possibly without pentile); quad core and 28nm lte from samsung, moto, htc (and possibly others).

If the maxx sells well then it is probable that all the vendors will move up to > 2500mwh batteries on the flagship devices (though the newer technology might not require the larger battery).

I think the 10mm to 8mm will become the target thickness as well as 1080p resolution and non pentile (of oled displays are available - else pentile).

Not sure if htc and lg will move to oled or stick with ips.

It's just our EXACT phone with a fat battery shoved in there. It's as thick as the top portion all the way down to the bottom.
If you are a heavy duty phone obsessed user who can't put it down, it's probably ideal for you.
If you are like me and you can go all day long on a single charge, it's not anything to be concerned about.

Sounds like Motorola's lame attempt at making everyone happy even though the battery isn't removable. "We'll at least it's bigger since you can't just get an extended one!" As usual they are pushing their "Droid" product line that we MUST automatically fall in love with like the OG Droid .....fat chance. It would be nice if Motorola still made phones that solid for Verizon!

I think that it is a great move. It does not make us feel cheated, if they upgraded anything apart from the battery that would be the case, and at the same time provides better battery life for those who really need it.
Where do you get the Razr isn't solid? It performs remarkably well, and has even made some people convert to the new version of Blur. The battery issue is really not that big a deal to a lot of satisfied customes. And if the maxxx is really that much better but only in battery life, folks have a choice. It doesn't in any way indicate the Razr is a failure. If anything, simply increasing battery size speaks to how "solid" the Razr architecture is.

From a marketing perspective, I do think it's stupid of Moto to spread out the release of these RAZR versions so you have:

I think they would sell better if they had all of them available at the same time and it would be better for the consumers. However, I understand the manufacturing reasoning. They set up the manufacturing for one model just to try to keep up with initial demand and as the demand tapers off, they can switch some lines to make different colors or use the bigger battery...which is smart. Otherwise, they have to try to balance the manufacturing lines to try to meet the unknown demand of four different models. That's not easy.

Same here, but now I don't know if i should get the Maxx or the Original Razr. Or if i should hold out another month or two to get the latest and greatest, maybe quad core phone?

My wife is holding out until the Droid 4 is released. She can't live without a full size keyboard for texting. From the specs, the Droid 4 is basically the same as the Razr except it's not as thin.

Actually, I got the Razr in SPITE of how thin it is. I had a fairly active dislike for the design the first time I held it, because it felt like it was going to squirt out of my hand at any second, like a wet bar of soap.
I first went with a GNex, but I'm one of the folks that lives in a weak signal area, which is a problem for the Gnex. When I took it back to the store I was fondling a Rezound, which was my second choice for a phone (the Razr was a distant third). The guy that was working with me took a call on his personal cell, he put it on the counter when done and I saw that it had a very nice display. When I asked him what it was he said "it's the one you don't like" (he'd already asked me if I wanted to look at the Razr, I said no because I didn't like how thin it is). He handed me his phone, which was in a case, and I said "Hey, this is OK with a case on it". The rest, as they say, is history. I happily walked out of the store with my new Razr ensconced in it's case.
Yep, I overpaid to get a case from Verizon, but at least I could hold on to the phone.
Had the Razr Maxx been available then, I probably would have gone for that. Not because of the extra battery (I have no problem getting through a day), but because of the extra thickness.
