Razr questions answered

For me I would take great battery over gaming performance. Then again I don't use my phone to play games like that. I just think they are going to focus more on battery and not really put as much focus on gaming since that isn't going to be that big of a selling point to most people.


Now that I have had my Asus transformer since July I doubt I use y phone for gaming much either. Although it's nice to have the option of gaming on it. My kids LOVE gaming on either my phone or tablet. I usually let them use my phone now as I am usually on my tab. So if I had to choose I would choose better battery life with the ability to game when needed.
 
From th videos weve seen it looks like RGBW as the whites looked nice and bright not dim and greyish ala RGBG.

It must be RGBG as it's SAMOLED.
Interestingly Moto is still using white background on Razr setting screen like Bionic, D3 with pentile LCD. On SAMOLED screen, white would consume more power than black although it doesn't matter in LCD screen. Maybe Moto forgot about it?

If it has RGBG and has greyish whites I won't be getting the RAZR. I cannot stand greyish, dim displays. For instance, the Tbolt display looks pathetic to me (i realize is is not samoled) because it is not only dim, but whites are grey. My X and now my DX2 absolutely obliterate the tbolt screen. That being said the Charge also has very dim whites beng samoled but very crisp, deep colors. I still much prefer my DX2 display which I feel has the brightest, whitest whites on a cell phone. At least of all the on hands comparisons i have made. Any phone with dim whites or dim display won't be one I will own.

Then neither Razr or Nexus will be your phone as they are both SAMOLED screen. Every screen technology has trade-off with many factors and there is none perfect at everything. Bionic and D3 are using pentile LCD with RGBW sub-pixels for bright white, but downside of that is poor edge sharpness and crosshatch pattern on closer looks. Apparently Moto is moving away from pentile LCD for better sharpness.

The x screen looks so washed out compared to the thunderbolt and ive owned both. Looks lile neither of these phones will be for you then.

I couldn't disagree more..... the X destroyed that crappy screen on the Tbolt. It looked like someone had lightly sprayed grey paint over the tbolt screen. And the X2 is significantly brighter than the X. Side by side both the x and X2 obliterate the tbolt. The X2 also has nice deep colors (moreso than the x by a ways). Besides the pentile effect, which is very hard to discern, my X2 screen is very, very nice IMHO.

I've seen the videos of the RAZR, and it seemed to have a very nice, bright display with white (not greyish) whites. As long as it doesn't have the greyish effect of a display like the charge has I think it will be fine for me. But with displays, a person really needs to see them firsthand before making any final decisions.

That's slightly more than 30% difference, depending on which number you use as the base measurement. So, that pretty much confirms to me that the only difference is the resolution, nothing else. Same old PenTile display.

For essentially the same screen size, the greater pixel density should make a big difference in the pixelation issue seen on the Bionic.

Question is wheter the pixels drop of the "I can see you" curve. Is the Razr enough, or do you need to go to GNex levels of resokution to eliminate any visible pixelation?

I apologize, I wasn't clear. My contention is that they're comparing it to Super AMOLED Plus in a way that would imply that their display is superior (even though it's last year's SAMOLED). This is like a car manufacturer advertising more trunk space when you're looking for better fuel economy.

This screen, aside from resolution, is the same display used on last year's Galaxy S. It's PenTile, but RGBG (not RGBW, as in the Bionic). This gives better color reproduction and fewer jaggies, but doesn't have the potential to be as bright. Anyone who saw the Galaxy S knows that this screen is pretty bright, regardless.

So by "same old PenTile," I didn't mean in comparison to the Bionic. This screen is far superior to the Bionic's, IMO. I meant that it was the same as what we had last year, just higher resolution. It's not RGBW or non-PenTile as some has claimed.

It's the typical SAMOLED RGBG pentile matrix. However, the 'Advanced' part is that it's 25% more power efficient. I believe Moto mentioned that during the release. I don't have a direct link but this review mentions it as well:

If it's the same screen and more power efficient, it likely means that they either reduced the brightness, reduced the saturation, or a combination of both. However, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to more of the latter than the former.

They could have also made the auto-brightness sensor a little more power efficient. Those things are sometimes more trouble than they're worth. A perfect example is my Incredible, which uses significantly more power on auto-brightness than it does on max brightness full time. However, this paragraph is pure speculation on my part and not supported by fact. The previous paragraph is the one with factual information.

Also pure speculation but theoretically possible is that they were able to maintain (or even increase) the brightness/saturation while reducing power usage. Since improvements in materials, production process, drive circuits, etc can reduce the electrical resistance of the circuits without compromising the visual quality.

I still can't find any real data on SAMOLED-Advanced but did find another reference on Amazon UK:

Thus far all the reviews are excellent in terms of the display quality so I'm not concerned that we're giving up in the visuals. Eventually we'll get some real tech data on the display and how it works.

The question is 25% more efficient than what? I think when Samsung first released SAMOLED screens whey were touting 25% less power consumption over AMOLED screen. So that number sounds familiar to me. Did they state what their reference is for 25% more efficient?

It's supposed to be vs. SAMOLED+. That's what I recall hearing in the Moto release event but I can't find a quote of it - just the vague references I've already posted.
