RC9 Update recieved 3am this morning in the UK

---OFF TOPIC---

I thought the educational system in the US was better than the UK's O_o ...

---END---

No news on my update yet...

Just a thought...

Are the people who got the update on business contracts?

I'm thinking T-Mobile might send out the updates to business users before personal users.

mines just a normal contract.

This thread does make me chuckle everytime I read it. Watching people get over excited and angry because they haven't received and yet I haven't seen one person who had got it detail what these *massive* changes are or more to the point what the changes haven't brought us. Is there any information on this? I was wondering if the biggest reason for this smaller update is to try and combat rooting in the same way apple are always bringing out minor updates to try and combat unlocking and installing not app store applications?

I'm not having a go just an observation but I'm wondering if people are just getting a bit carried away over the whole affair. I'm sure we will get it when we will get it (I haven't yet and I'm not losing sleep over it either)

On the point of the whole EU v UK release to me it makes sense. It's only a language pack thing and many phone networks use the same principle, it saves having hundreds of variations of the same thing just for a different language so will contain a whole host of languages for different releases. Anyone ever used an SE phone or Nokia? You have a multitude of languages on each handset for different regions to choose from on each handset depending on the region.

Makes sense....

just a guess but mabe if the phones left for a while it triggers update as i got mine early in the morning aswell as the op. or they might be just sending updates at night whilst the networks not busy.

that makes sense as I recieved mine at like 3am - Was not impressed lol

So that would mean I'd probably wake up in the morning and find the update screen on the front of my phone when I do eventually get it.

Assuming the whole 1000 random people is true...

How long do you reckon it will be before T-Mobile are satisfied to roll it out to everyone?

---EDIT---

Seems like Germany are beginning to get it as well...

http://androidcentral.com/german-g1-users-rc9-update-similar-rc33/

theres a link to the RC9 pack in that link..

http://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-TMI-RC9-from-TMI-RC4.c8187210.zip

so it's basically possible to rename that file and update it manually, right..?

or is that the EU version, and we're waiting for the UK version..?

The fact that Germany has the EU tag and MzBlack also has the EU tag must mean that its the same all over Europe...so I'm guessing it would work...

I believe they give you instructions there as well to manually update it.

I prefer to just wait for my phone to update itself....

Could anyone explain how the rollout works? Does the 'go-message' come from t-mobiles own antennas, or does it come from google over 3g/wifi and how is it distributed to the phone?

If the first part is the case then all us users in non-t-mobile land will have to wait for someone to grab the URL and manually update.

You're guess is as good as mine....

I'm not on T-mobile and the first update came up on the phone, and every time I said I didn't want to update it, it came back.. So it somehow downloaded itself through WiFi since I don't have any edge/3G profile working on the phone. So my guess would be, that this will happen to me (us) again, but if it does not happen after the rest of the UK users get their update, I simply install it myself..

i'm not losing any sleep ,my point was why is the uk so far behind usa-germany with updates and the lack of support shown by tmobile uk :p
the g1 is a fantastic phone and we are entitled to use all it's features just the same as any other country. Surely that's not to much to ask.People wouldn't have to root their g1's if google & tmobile got their act together and released the g1's full potential as seen in root!!!
l don't wanna root my phone ,but l will if they don't fufill the g1's potential by november!!!!

My guess is that by the time Vodafone's HTC Magic comes out....we'll see some major improvements with the OS...

To be honest I think that's what's delaying everything in terms of getting updates, getting new features etc.
I think right now...Google are working on getting as many phones out there with Android on them and then it will work on updates for the OS as it will have a larger user base (maybe) ....

But then, being the kind of guy that likes to look at both sides of the coin....I'm also keeping in mind that this may not be the case and when the HTC Magic does come out...it gets all the fancy features and the G1's get nothing....

The reason why I am so interested in the update is because my G1 is not usable right now I was sold a phone thats now useless. for example one bug I have been promised will be fixed in this update by T Mobile is something I have lived with for months is the inability to empty trash when using a POP3 account (not gmail I know i can empty that via gmail.com) my phones memory is full and now its just an expensive paper weight. and yes I have deleted the account trash is still there!

Google is an American company T-Mobile is a German company you do the maths

My take on this, the Magic will be released and it will have some cupcakes on there. At the end of the day its Vodafone exclusive in the EU and I can see T-Mobile pressuring google to ensure the G1 software is kept just as good.

What I am wondering though is...will both the G1 and the Magic share the same market place? Or will google setup a marketplace for each handset?

It will be the same market place. It wouldn't make sense to have different markets just because the handset has changed
