Real HDMI sucks....

I'm gonna be honest, if you had high hopes for the HDMI port being useful on this then I'd say you need to re-evaulate your expectations.

I pretty much assumed that the HDMI out on the phone was a bid to sell more gadgets to dads with too much money and no knowledge of hardware. At this point, android's not quite ready to be belching out full HD videos to drive large-scale displays. If you want that, buy an appletv or something.

High-end phones have this sort of crap tacked onto them all the time. Back in the day, when cameraphones first came out they had an absolutely bullshit resolution and were pretty much useless. Manufacturers got wise of the fact that their little ploy to draw in folks who thought consolidating two gadgets would be neat, now they're standard. These days you get other crap tossed onto phones - HDMI out, 3d cameras, dual SIM slots, kickstands - that are not fully thought out, only really suitable for any real use by hardcore users willing to dick with their hardware, and basically intended to make their device more appealing in a sea of devices that have similar specs/software. There might be a point in the future where people see the need to hook your phone up to your TV to play video or use apps, but we're not there now - it's a novelty, and it's something that Motorola can use to elevate their kit over other people's hardware.
A novelty? The Iphone is kicking androids ass all over the place with thier "novelty". I disagree, I see no reason why we should not epect our HDMI out to work so we can watch movies, etc on any t.v. Makes me wonder what Moto was thinking. I know the output with the Iphone is not hdmi, but who cares...

Yes, a novelty. Motorola and HTC are not above trying to slap something onto a product to make it more appealing.

I should reevalute my expectation that something on the phone works? Why should I do that?

I guess you're smarter than most of us, then. I also assumed that HDMI was put on there to sell more gadgets, but that doesn't mean that it's OK if it doesn't work. Which it sounds like this one does anyways, at least for video you put on it. And one thing I'd like to use it for is to watch a movie on a TV when on vacation, and I'm not buying an AppleTV, and even if I did, I wouldn't take it on vacation with me.

Yes, it's a novelty, but for it to elevate their handset over others, it needs to be useable, otherwise it will just be a liability. And just because you don't see a need to hook your phone up to a TV doesn't mean other people don't see the need, or at least have the desire to do so.

By the way, the HDMI port wasn't a make-or-beak part of my decision to buy a Droid X. I had already decided to buy it, and when I was looking at it in the store, I saw the port. I don't need it, but I can think of a time or two when I might want to use it. Like I'll probably be taking a short vacation with my family for Thanksgiving, and if I can load a few movies on the SD card to watch on a TV there, that would be awesome. No need to pack DVDs, and I'll have my phone with me anyways, so it's a good thing if it works. And I'm not too concerned about outputting 720p HiDef video, standard def will be fine and take up less space.

I just wanted to add my thoughts...

The added hdmi port on the dx had no bearing on my decision to purchase this particular phone model. Once I got my DX I decided to go ahead and get the hdmi out cable. After hooking it up to my television I was very disappointed (like many people) at the lack on integration with the stock interface.

After Real HDMI was released on the market I purchased it. Even though I had read remarks saying how much work the program needed. Let me tell you this, Gman completely blew this one out of the park. Yes, the program is in the early stages. Yes, the program has some bugs. Yes, the lack of mirroring can make navigation difficult. Yes, this is still a helluva lot better than anything that I have put on the market. As a matter of fact it's better than anyone has done. Supporting this dev is only going to ensure that the program gets better and better in time. Please bear in mind that he is working within parameters set by the existing software so some things aren't in his control. Lets appreciate all of the great things it offers us while we give Gman some time to work through all the workups.

I too am very thankful for this app. I've got my $6 cord coming in the mail from Monoprice and I've also already purchased RealHdmi. Like others have said, if you truly care about this functionality then you would pay $1.99 and be a part of essentially what has become the beta testers for this app. Contribute feedback and it will get better.

Many developers these days plead in their descriptions for users to EMAIL rather than get on forums like these and bitch away.

You must keep in mind as mentioned, Moto throwing HDMI on this thing was an afterthought so you CAN DO EXACTLY as most users are: sharing videos and photos while away with family and friends. You gotta figure if this is such an important feature then maybe a netbook with HDMI or a HD camera with hdmi out would have been a better purchase.

I understand people's frustrations however. Here we have a home run of a device with home run hardware yet its crippled. Then again, where would that leave Moto in terms of "innovation" for the next round of processors and phones?

The only question yet unanswered is where 2.2 Froyo is for the DX, as more and more alternatives either come with it pre-installed or guaranteed to have it in short order. Regardless of "the end of summer" debate, Moto dropped the ball on this one. Period.

I've been using it to watch movies, play NES, SNES and Gamboy ROMS through my X and onto the big screen and have not had a problem with it. The only drawback is the X screen not mirroring what's being displayed on the TV.

What isn't working correctly for you?
how do you even manage this. since the screen doesnt mirror all you can do is guess where you are pressing is right. what kinds of games are you playing where you can feel around for the right button all the time on the screen. im not even going to try to do youtube that would be hell trying to guess where each key is on the screen

edit: unless youre playing with the wii controller in that case i take back it all that would be a good idea

i bought this app for my X and bought my cable. what a hunk of crap. are people really using this and happy with it? why would Verizon and Motorola even hype an HDMI port if it dont work? who wants to just look at their media pictures? everyone wants to watch youtube or hulu videos and its crap. nice work everyone. Anyone know of any "real" apps that will work correctly?

I am so excITEd that I got a phone with an HDMI output! Do I use that HDMI output? No! At least I have it, though. ;)

hahahaha +2

Heh!

Eric,

Seriously, I love reading your smarta$$ posts, so much so, that when I see that you were the last poster in a thread, I go out of my way to read it! :)

Just stay out of trouble! ;) :p
